jenna3232
Hi all I am in the midst of a Whole30 and had a very sudden reaction to Tessemae's wing sauce. This sauce is compliant but has quite the kick to it (and I usually think of myself as someone who can tolerate hot food). I was eating it with my dinner, dipping my sweet potato's into it. It was super tasty but MAN was I not used to the super flavor. Plus the heat kind of made my stomach go wobbly half way through. But it was tasty... so, alas, I cleaned my small plate. About 10 minutes later I experienced significant bloat and felt incredibly ill. I still feel a little sick. The only ingredients are: Olive oil, cayenne, garlic, lemon, mustard (filtered water, spices), vinegar, and sea salt. Has anyone while doing whole30 had a such a negative reaction to hot foods? redjasmin
Maybe you are intolerant to nightshades? Thankfully I've not experienced this reaction - dairy I can live without, but chilli? but I know it is quite common for people to be intolerant to nightshades, maybe you are just noticing the reaction more in the absence of all the other inflammatory foods? Maybe you should cut out nightshades for the rest of your whole 30 and then reintroduce them at the end to see if they are causing you a problem? Moderators Tom Denham Posted July 24, 2013 Moderators Share Posted July 24, 2013 Is there a chance your reaction was to something else you ate? Or something you ate at an earlier meal and you just happened to experience the symptoms while eating the wing sauce at this meal? It just seems unlikely that you would have such a powerful experience to a small amount of sauce unless you have serious issues with nightshades. Issues so serious I would have expected you to experience them before.
Renee Lee
Actually Tom, I'm going to disagree with you. It's not that unlikely. The capsaicin in spicy foods/peppers is just one of the alkaloids in nightshades that people can have issues with. Capsaicin is actually protection for the plant, preventing it by being eaten how? by blowing up bugs' stomachs/gut linings. OP, some of us are more tolerant to spicy foods than other. I wouldn't cut out all nightshades, I'd just lay off the spicy peppers
Nadia B
Clearly I am a bug I react to different nightshades in many ways from severe digestive stress to mildly upset stomach. All peppers (+ spices from this family) tear my gut apart, but tomatoes will only result in some skin irritations. Try it again after some time (like 2 days after?) to be sure. Bet
Having hot sauce is like having 100 peppers in one sitting. No wonder your body freaked out. I have always had a nightshade problem, I've never had a raw tomato since I had a reaction when I was 3 years old. But I used to eat peppers and eggplant all the time and my mouth would go numb and I'd swell up. I just never made the connection. But I could never eat hot sauce, ever. I don't like hot stuff and if I did manage to eat any, I'd get very sick. My husband just bought that Sirachi sauce and wanted me to try it. No thanks! jenna3232
Thank's guys for all great responses/advice. I do use cayenne on a regular basis in cooking, but it's usually in small amounts. Like Bet suggested, this hot sauce was quite extreme in flavor and heat... Tom - While i'm not 100 percent sure if the wing sauce was the culprit, it was a pretty instantaneous reaction. I also noticed this morning that I had some sort of speckled rash on my cheekbones and eye lids. Very abnormal. My eyes are a little puffy too. I have pictures. Could someone explain how to post photos to the forums? Thanks This seems like more of an allergic reaction... ?

Do different peppers have different levels?
Renee Lee
I'm really not sure, my botany isn't great. All peppers have capsaicin in them, just varying degrees, and it's concentrated mostly in the pith in the middle. I'm sure that bell peppers, while lower in capsaicin, probably have higher concentrations of a different alkaloid to make up for it, and maybe that's what you're reacting to?
