Day 24: Still Having Mucus Problems

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

One of the reasons I was excited about starting the Whole30 was (hopefully) getting rid of excessive mucus/congestion. It's worst when I first wake up in the morning. I'm a mouth breather when I sleep (because I usually can't breathe through my nose) and wake up with a dry throat and have to do a lot of hacking (maybe too much info, but the truth).

I'm on Day 26, and though my sinus clarity has improved TREMENDOUSLY, I'm still experiencing what seems to be an excess of mucus and have to clear my throat quite a bit. However, maybe I don't know what the "normal" amount of mucus is supposed to be and I'm fine.

Any insights? I've been really compliant with the dietary guidelines. Could I perhaps still be eating some foods that cause congestion?

Thanks in advance!

Holly

Interested in hearing the replies.  I have a similar, maybe milder problem. Nasal mucus.  I originally thought it was leftover/part of healing from when I smoked, but I've been smoke-free a few years now.  I have read it is one of the many symptoms of candida overgrowth also. Anyway just wanted to say "me too", sorry I can't help really.

I haven't noticed a huge difference, but I did come down with a bad headcold which seems to be lingering. I do find that my sinus activity seems weather related. Now that we have the AC on full time, it dries the air and makes my nose run. I am not convinced it's from dairy.

I noticed big improvements in my sinus symptoms but I still have days where they are worse or better (despite my dairy intake - post W30) and I more attribute that to environmental impacts. Usually its worse when I've been outside more or cleaning more or with certain weather.

Allergens are still allergens so if your food doesn't clear everything up there might be something environmental involved as well.

I second the neti pot. I don't use mine enough.

You could go a couple of ways with this:

a ) you've had these symptoms for a long time, i gather? 30 days may not be long enough to turn them around completely. 45-60 days may have continued improvement?

b ) there's still something in your diet causing you issues.  the first ones i'd look at are eggs and nuts. Pulling these out completely for 2-3 weeks may be the silver bullet.

c ) it's not related to diet, but environmental.
