writergirljodie
Wow! It's been a real whirlwind this past week! I can't believe I'm already through 8 full days of this new lifestyle. Let me back up and tell you a little about me. Back in 2009, I started having trouble with GERD. My doc put me on Nexium and I stayed on that for a couple of years. Then, the Nexium stopped working and acid reflux began to take over every moment of my life. I went back to my doc who sent me to a gastro. He discovered a hiatal hernia. Yuck. Surgery seemed eminent until I went on an elimination diet. I found that I had trouble with gluten and then dairy, as well. So, I eliminated those two foods from my diet and lived on for the next couple of years, Nexium free, with very few issues. Until a few weeks ago. The GERD came back. I had put on a few pounds in recent months and apparently the extra weight was putting pressure on my hernia, which I never had surgery to correct. I went back to my doc and he put me back on Nexium and referred me to another gastro. I'm scheduled to see him in early September. So, that gave me about 6 weeks to get my weight under control and try to give my body the best possible chance of healing I could. I came across the Whole30 program and thought to myself, "It's time to make a real lasting change." My vices have been my downfall - I like my wine after the kids go to bed and I love my German chocolate. These vices had become a ritual for me, indulging practically every night. If it was just one glass of wine and one piece of chocolate, it probably wouldn't have been such a big deal. But it become 2-3 glasses of wine and half a block of chocolate. Terrible. I knew those would be the difficult habits to break, but I also knew I had to do it in order to be healthy. Acid reflux and GERD SUCK!! So here I am, starting day 9 of the Whole30 and I haven't had sugar or alcohol yet. I'm pretty proud of myself for not falling off the wagon. I feel great and I'm excited about this journey. I have 5 weeks to go before I visit my new gastro, probably to be referred to surgery to correct my hernia. I'm eager to see how much good I can do before then. writergirljodie
Yesterday, on day 8, I began to notice a few changes. I had a whole house full of kids and it was quite chaotic. My husband came home for lunch and immediately got stressed and wanted to go back to work! LOL! I asked him what was wrong and he came back at me asking, "How can you be so calm?" And that's when I noticed a bizarre, Zen-like calm that had enveloped me. I was more patient than I had ever been. Nothing bothered me. Not the screaming. Not the running around in my over-crowded house. Not the constant bickering. Nothing. I was actually happy and content. I don't know if it's my ultra-clean eating that has created this balance that I'm experiencing or if it could be attributed to something else. Has anyone else felt this phenomenon? If you have felt this Zen encompass you, please share your experience!! I would love to read it!!
joolie
I bet the elimination of chocolate and wine will surely help your GERD! I also experience GERD and I'm anxious to eliminate it throught diet rather than meds. Life is so much better without it . I'm here to say DOWN WITH GERD!!
