Lizee
HI I've decided to stop lurking the whole 30 forum, blog and instagram, and finally start Whole30. I'll be starting tomorrow August 5. Can I start whole30 WITHOUT grass fed / free range / organic products? I recently went grocery shopping and stocked my fridge veggies, fruits, eggs, chicken, turkey and beef. My poultry and beef are lean cuts, but not grass fed. I would hate to discard my new groceries or delay starting whole 30 because my products are not high quality. My plan is to eat clean and healthy with my current grocery haul. Then on my next grocery trip buy grass fed and etc... Would I still qualify for starting whole30 with my current food products? Was anyone else in a similar situation when starting whole30? Any feedback would be helpful. Thanks =)
AmyS
Yes. (I did like six Whole30s (really) before I found a reliable source of grass fed beef; I have yet to find a source for really good chicken; and I buy the veggies I can afford, which are mostly not organic.) amberino21
It's fine - you mentioned you bought lean cuts; im sure this is actually better for non organic/grass fed as the "bad" stuff is likely stored in the fat. Enjoy!
AmyS
Yes, just drain any fat that collects when you cook your meat. Then add homemade mayo or olive oil to replenish the fat. (I've had to get used to the idea that I don't have to drain the fat anymore now that I have a good source of grass-fed beef!)

AmyS
Amy, I still feet slightly naughty enjoying the crispy fat off my good steaks! I know, I made a beef stew and did not have to cut off the fat - I kept doing it anyway and throwing the pieces to the dog. Next time I make beef stew I think she's going to feel deprived!! Lizee
Thanks for the prompt feedback ladies! I was nervous that tomorrow would " count" as whole30. I'll need to start researching affordable grass fed / free range meats and eggs. As for fatty meat ill really miss bacon and chorizo ( drool)
amberino21
You can have bacon and chorizo - as long as its compliant! I haven't found any in, or looked too hard (and I'm in Australia) but plenty of people have it. Bacon, and probably chorizo, is more of a fat source than a protein... praxisproject
If you can't find the right bacon, cooking a pork belly gives a porky alternative
