JayneNZ
So, here I am at the end of Day 1. No major dramas really but as the day has worn on I have missed the missing sugar in my tea and coffee more and more. B: scrambled eggs on silverbeet L: leftover liver, bacon & onion with the bacon bits picked out (ok picking those babies out was hard) D: lamb chop, roasted kumara, pumpkin, carrot & brussel sprouts with broccoli & cauliflower all drizzled with paleo mayo Snacks were some roasted almonds. Drinks were tea and coffee with coconut milk but NO sugar Argh! Made a frittata tonight as I won't have time to make a proper breakfast tomorrow as I have to get my daughter (15) off to camp really early. Made it with fried onion, then just dumped in a range of leftover vegies from dinner and cut up the left over chop, for more protein. Mixed up 6 eggs, threw in a bit of salt and tossed it in the oven. Had the tiniest of slices to test it and it was GOOD! Also have the bones defrosting for me to make some bone broth tomorrow. Off to bed soon as it's 10:20pm and I will need all the sleep I can get before I wake a 15 year old at 6am lol It won't be pretty!!
Moderators Tom Denham Posted August 5, 2013 Moderators Share Posted August 5, 2013 I'm guessing you would benefit from increasing your water consumption a lot. Not only will you not miss sugar in your water like you may with tea and coffee, you need 1/2 ounce of water per pound of body weight to be fully hydrated. It is unlikely that you are drinking that much tea and coffee.
joolie
Good Luck on getting her up this morning! I just sent my 11 year old to his first overnight youth camp for the first time yesterday. I miss him so much!!
JayneNZ
Thanks Tom - good advice about the water - I never drink enough! Will try carrying a water bottle around with me today. And Joolie, aw first camp - don't worry he'll be back before you know it, but I do remember the angst when they leave the nest for the first time even just overnight. As for me, there wasn't too much drama this morning and now I'm looking forward to a blissful 4 days without Miss Drama Queen pushing my buttons (who I absolutely adore by the way! lol)
JayneNZ
Day 2 - hmmm First of all I could not get to sleep last night for AGES. Of course, I'm used to going to sleep with the aid of a few glasses of wine. I know that sounds disgusting but it's true. Unfortunately it became my way of coping during and following our two major earthquakes and subsequent thousands of aftershocks - and so now I find myself almost completely unable to sleep without it. Yes, a problem, which is partly the interest in the W30. I am not allowed to drink - maybe that will make it easier to be normal? Anyway, tossed and turned forever and then up at 6:30 feeling so hungry I thought I would vomit (sorry but that was true too). Luckily I had made that frittata so I had a slice of that and took Miss 15 off to catch the bus for camp. As the bus was leaving from the park next to school I decided to go for a walk around the park. 20 minutes later and feeling pretty smug. Healthy breakfast AND exercise. Now, I'm feeling really flat. Don't know if I'm hungry, I think I'm tired and want to lie down, my head has a dull ache and I just feel really blah and crappy. Can't be bothered doing anything today so I don't think I will (day off) maybe I'll just watch a movie.
Physibeth
First I want to say hello and tell you how much I loved my too short visit to your beautiful city! The wine might not be what was helping you sleep as much as the habit of the wine. It's time to create a new bedtime routine. Doing the same things before bed every night helps your body know it is time for sleep. Day 2 and poor sleep will make anyone blah and crappy. Eat good food and hang in there! amberino21
Jayne, as much as you perhaps can't be bothered, try and eat well, according to the template - it really will help you feel better!!
JayneNZ
The end of Day 2 First of all Thankyou sooo much to Beth, Jan and Amber for stopping by and sharing - it means so much to me. Although this journal is a way for me to put down my thoughts and reactions to doing the W30 (which I can hopefully look back on and laugh at) it is also written to get feedback and support - so just know that I really do appreciate it. So how did the rest of my day go? As I said I felt yuk, didn't feel like eating, couldn't be bothered doing anything. I roasted off the bones for the bone broth and then picked all the meat off (good protein and quite yummy actually) then I laid on the couch for a bit and even dozed off. Oh, and did I mention I've had indigestion all day??? I had to force myself to make dinner as the frittata had lost its appeal. So I fried up some onions, chopped brussel sprouts, the rest of the roast veg, what was left of the meat on the bones and some mushrooms (in coconut oil) and then sprinkled with my yummy savoury salt (made by a friend & I checked it was compliant first!). It was quite yummy. Later on I had a huge handful of almonds and a mandarin (which was nice and sweet and yummy) but don't want to get pulled into having lots of fruit to satisfy that sweet monster. However, the biggest thing to report today has been the battle going on in my head. It has been constant all day about sugar but then turned really nasty about 8pm. Yes, wine time. Well, anytime after 7pm is was wine time lol. I could just have one glass, I really need just one glass, it will make these cravings go away, red wine is good for you, I really, really need a glass of wine, I WANT a glass of wine, I could just jump in the car and wine will be mine in about 15 minutes. Sheer bloody determination kept me from succumbing but it was HARD. Ending on a positive note: I know that the lethargy, headaches, indigestion and cravings are all part of the massive detox going on inside my body and that every day that I can stick at this will help to make them go away. I did get my drink bottle out but have only had about 500ml as it seemed to make my indigestion worse. It will be something that I will improve on tomorrow. Above all, I'm just really proud of myself that I got through today WITHOUT giving in to ANY demons. Now I'm off to tick the box on the daily email that says "YES, I DID it" woohoo
amberino21
Yay!! to beating all the demons and dragons and getting through the day even though you felt terrible. It will get easier, promise!
Physibeth
Great job fighting through those cravings! If drinking water makes your indigestion worse then you may be struggling with low stomach acid and might want to look into digestive enzymes. I've not used them myself but there are a bunch of threads discussing them. I've seen a lot of people who miss their wine find comfort in adding some kombucha to their day. You might want to pick up a bottle and give it a try. Make sure there is no added sugar.
joolie
Great job, Jayne!! Keep going - each day gets better and better! I feel amazing without wine in my system. I'm hoping to enjoy wine occasionally once the whole30 is over, instead of it being a habit it will hopefully become a treat.
Darlene
Hang in there, Jayne - you're doing great, even if it doesn't seem like it right now! I had the same thought Bethany did about having some Kombucha during wine time. To those of you who've been through this before: Would sipping Kombucha from a wine glass be enabling a habit, or would it be a healthy substitute behavior? You're still doing the same actions, just with a different drink. I think breaking the habit would need you to avoid it altogether.
JayneNZ
Thanks guys - yes I had thought of maybe putting some soda water and lime juice (or something) in a wine glass but came to the conclusion that it might still be reinforcing the act of having a wine glass in my hand every night, so I have decided to just break the habit. At least tonight's battle wasn't as hard. Tomorrow night may be different as I'm back at work (the pm shift as usual) and always look forward to a drink when I get home. Day 3 This seems to be going very s-l-o-w-l-y. Still had a dull head and also today noticed that I have what feels like a chest infection. I'm coughing a bit and it also feels very yuk in my chest. Got worried today because I thought about all the things that you would normally take to relieve it and none of them are compliant!! (Honey mostly) So I decided that I wouldn't have a chest infection and that it would just be part of the detox. So food wise today: B: Scrambled eggs on silverbeet (chard), with mayo, again (My son finished off the frittata with my blessing hahaha) L: Salmon cakes (from ISWF) and a big green salad, tomato, sun-dried tomatoes, 2 boiled eggs and a few seeds. (Those salmon cakes are seriously YUMMY) D: Pork mince & apple (from ISWF) roast veg (kumara, pumpkin, carrot, brussel sprouts, broccoli & cauliflower) with mayo to dress the veg (told you I put it on everything!) Snacks: 1 Mandarin & a (large) handful (ok then, 2) of pistachio nuts. yum yum yum I had to go to the supermarket this afternoon so I got my son to drop me there on his way to work and I walked home, so 30 minutes exercise was mine! It was funny going round the supermarket, I looked over at the wine department longingly and said "See you in 27 days" hahahaha Then when I was topping up my almond supply I saw the pistachios. Normally I would think they were too expensive but in the last 3 days I haven't bought wine, so I decided that I could afford the treat. Still quite tired today, and had to have another nap, but not too bad. I still didn't get off to sleep very well last night and in fact had a raging headache soon after going to bed so I had to pop a couple of panadol. Work tomorrow night and I am prepared. I am going to have the left-over salmon cakes and a big salad for dinner, with maybe some pieces of steak for snacks. Right, off to bed - after clicking on my "I did it" email and watching my treat lol
joolie
We are on the same path, I think! I also got stuck briefly in the wine aisle yesterday and I also ended up buying pistachios that I thought were too expensive
JayneNZ
Day 4 Today was ok all in all. Not too bad in the craving department during the day but it did get worse at night. I still have a dull headache pretty much constantly but still putting that down to the detox effect. I have given a bit of thought to how much this detox is hurting which makes me shudder to think of how I have been abusing this body over the years. So anyway, meals today: B: Left-over pork mince, fried egg on top, left-over roast vegies on the side with mayo L: Porterhouse steak and roast vegies D: Salmon cakes x 2 and salad with 2 boiled eggs S: Kiwifruit x 1, handful of pistachios, 1 steak cut into long strips dipped in mayo I started back at work tonight after a few days off. I'm an RN on a busy surgical ward (colo-rectal - how apt!) and luckily tonight there were no goodies to tempt me. You know nurses really do eat a bunch of crap lol Before the W30 I was primal/paleo (no bread, rice, pasta) for a few months so when the cakes and bikkies used to be laid on I wasn't too fussed but when the crackers and dips came out - OMG I am such a savoury slave hahahaha I was off-roading it more than I care to think when the dips came out!! So anyway, pretty good tonight - no temptations and quite busy. Still got a few cravings and bit one of my colleagues heads off (OMG I felt terrible!!) Alls good tho, I apologised and said I was doing a detox and explained and she was fine. I still felt bad tho. Thankfully I wasn't working on the last 3 days lol OMG we just had another little shake - to be fair it was only little but it was quite noisy and they still make my heart go into my mouth (yes, even after all this time!) That is definitely one of my triggers for drinking and one I can't remove. It was centred just down the road from my place and shallow, which is probably why I heard it. It's such a frightening noise - especially when you wonder if there's a bigger one coming. Sorry I'm rambling now but I don't have any wine to console me. I only have tea with coconut milk wahhhh. Really not in a good place right now but I must try to stay strong. Sorry for the ramble.
Physibeth
Oh the "Kill all the things" phase...it will pass. You are almost through the worst of the detox phase. Keep hanging in there. Perhaps spend some time thinking about things that are non-food/alcohol related to help you deal with the tremmor/earthquake stress. There are lot of things in our lives that are completely out of our control that we waste a lot of energy fretting about.

This detox is pretty yuk huh. Makes you wonder if it's gonna be worth introducing half of the crap that I used to feed my body when it's over - just to go through this again on my next W30 (lol Did I just say NEXT??) So, of course, no major shake overnight and I'm still here and I'm SO pleased that I didn't run to the bottle hahaha Maybe I am strong enough to take control over my body and what goes in it - GO ME! Darlene
Jayne, have you ever heard of or used EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique)? That could be really helpful for the earthquake anxiety. It's not about saying you shouldn't be anxious, because that's totally natural, considering not-too-distant history. But EFT can definitely "take the edge off" so the stress doesn't impact your health. Here are a couple sites that can help you get started, if you're interested. An overview of what it is: http://eftmastersworldwide.com/what-is-eft/ Basic instructions: http://www.emofree.com/eft/recipe.html You've had it a bit rough so far, but you're doing a great job staying true! I think tomorrow will be a better day for you.

I think tomorrow will be a better day for you. Gosh Darlene - that is so funny that you mention EFT. My girlfriend in Wellington has just been to a counsellor and she is doing EFT and she recommended it to me as a way to deal with earthquake stress. I will definitely look into it, although not tonight as I've just got home from work and am feeling a bit washed out. I seem to have developed a chest infection - I didn't start with a cold or flu and all I can think is that maybe this is a result of the detox?? I'm not worried - I took an antibiotic tonight (and might do a day or two) so I will see if that helps. Feeling pretty yuk but not very unwell if that makes sense. I was going to post a question on another forum to see if this may indeed be from the detox of crap. I don't really want to mess with the natural healing of the body but don't want to get sicker!! Thanks again for the links.

JayneNZ
Day 5 Woke up feeling really, really awful. Like I had the flu!! Feels like a full on chest infection. Went to work and everyone there diagnosed me with a chest infection too lol Us nurses are so good at self-diagnosing. Anyway, I have taken an antibiotic and will perhaps take a day or two more but am wondering if this is more of the massive detox I'm putting my body through - will post a question for some of the advanced members advice. Food wise: B: Bit naughty as I got caught up with doing stuff for my son and prepping for dinner so didn't really have anything. L: Steak, fried egg, left over roast veg D: Salmon patties x 2 and big salad with 2 boiled eggs S: Almonds (handful) and salmon pattie x 1, oh and a boiled egg Not too bad a shift until someone plonked down a HUGE bowl of mini chocolate bikkies AND a big cake of chocolate. I was sooooo good. It was really good that todays daily email covered what to do so I just went to my zen place and I was cool. I did pick the bowl up and smell the chocolate a couple of times hahahaha which is really funny because I'm not really that much of a chocolate person. Anyway, that led to "why aren't you having any" which led to "sugar isn't that bad for you" and "that sounds like a very restrictive diet" etc etc etc I just couldn't be bothered arguing (feeling crappy) so just kind of let them talk amongst themselves hahaha So pretty good day today - I think it's getting easier! Off to click the button and get my reward.....
JayneNZ
I subscribe to an email list called "The Universe". They send out little messages to you from the universe every day/week whichever you choose and this was just waiting for me in my inbox. So very apt right now I had to laugh: "It's perfectly normal, Jayne, that when waiting for a really big dream to come true it seems like it's taking forever, you wonder if you're doing something wrong, and you feel like you should just be happy with less. But I promise you, no matter how long it takes, once it happens it'll seem as if time flew, you'll wonder how you ever doubted yourself, and you'll feel like you should have aimed a little higher.Aim a little higher, Jayne - The Universe"
Physibeth
I'm sorry you are getting sick. It probably is just bad timing though I did "happen" to get a cold about the same time during both my 30 day challenges. If you are taking antibiotics make sure you are eating foods that support happy good bacteria in your gut as the antibiotics will kill it all. Saurekraut, kimchi, and kombucha are all good things to do that. Good job resisting those sweets!
