Melinda
I've heard a lot about sunbutter. What is it?? I assume it's sunflower seed butter. I looked for it at Whole Foods, and I did find a jar on the very bottom shelf called "Sunbutter", but it contained a lot of not-so-good ingredients. What brand do you recommend? Where can I find it? Since I wasn't able to find any at Whole Foods I picked up a jar of cashew butter, hoping that would be a good substitue. I can't remember the name of the brand but it has a raccoon on the label. Is cashew butter a good substitue for sunbutter? If not, what is? Thanks!!
Moderators Tom Denham Posted August 8, 2013 Moderators Share Posted August 8, 2013 The best thing to do with sunbutter is leave it in the store. Leaving a jar of cashew butter in the store is a good substitute. Nut butters without off-plan ingredients are acceptable during a Whole30, but they are so frequently over-consumed and abused during Whole30s that I wish everyone would stop talking about them and let newbies go without them. jent103
Mine is Maranatha brand - no sugar, just a little salt. I got it (my Whole Foods carries it) to add to things like Sunshine Sauce. It's different enough from peanut butter that for me, it is not a food-with-no-brakes. If you can't find it, she recommends subbing almond butter in the cookbook - I'd guess cashew butter would be good too (if you're looking to add it to a recipe). Nadia B
Tom, I laughed out loud for 20 minutes. Sunbutter is good to make sunshine sauce, that's the only good use

Love this! I don't particularly like sunbutter, cashew butter is a lot nicer IMO, but id also try to use better alternatives for fats.
Melinda
Thank you! I will use almond butter instead! I was only wanting it so I could make the Sunshine Sauce from Well Fed. Whole30-approved nut butters are one of the things that I will only eat if they are an ingredient of a recipe, not something I will allow myself to eat by itself. Peanut butter is a huge weakness for me so I don't want to eat anything that will remind me of it (trying to break bad behavior).
Nadia B
Melinda, I think that almond butter is not ideal for that sauce. I'd use cashew butter or pumpkin seed butter if you can find some. They are also easy to make yourself. In this case you cans use organic ingredients and soak them to reduce antinutrients amount in them.
