Whole thirty whole shmirty, says my tummy

I finished whole30 last week. On the weekend I was part of a family together and I wasn't in the mood to be "that guy" at the table, so aside from requesting no meat I ate whatever was put in front of me or was on offer. Re-introduction party!

In a space of 24 hours this included:

tomato (had not consumed in 2 months)

garlic (had not consumed in 6 months)

rice (had not consumed in 2 months)

cheese (had not consumed in 3 months)

mushroom (had not consumed in 5 months)

pizza (had not consumed in 5 months)

cake (had not consumed in over 6 months)

peanut butter (had not consumed in a month)

Effects of all this: NONE

The only difference was the next day my gas had a lot more pungency, but I know that is a result of garlic.

I almost feel I should be disappointed that my digestive system seems to be completely in order...

So you are one of the lucky ones! A spoon of peanut butter, cheese or any garlic has me almost instantly clutching my stomach in pain.... I hope you slept better, felt better, had better skin, lost weight or something? If not it will be hard for you to see the long term benefits,,, but such is life! I have a family history of food problems, diabetes and cancer so its an easy call for me to value the low inflammatory way of eating...

I didn't get any dramatic reactions after my 1st whole30 & gradually slipped back into eating "normal" foods. Then after maybe a month or so, i realised my depression was back. The effects aren't always immediate. I count myself fortunate that i don't have severe sensitivities, i can eat out without being "that person", but i also know (now) that although a little gluten or sugar here & there is ok, it often leads to a little more & then I'm back where i started!

Hi , just wondering why you gave up garlic , tomatoes and mushrooms? They are so good for you. It's great you don't react, now you know that you can splurge if you wish but I am wondering why your diet was so restrictive before the Whole30 if these foods had no effect on you?

On w30 I struggled a bit the first week or two because I didn't have my macro balance sorted. I found the amount of starchy veg (lots of sweet potato) I had to include to get it right effectively made me sugar-dependent again (recognized when I suddenly found myself craving bread, pasta and similar crap I hadn't eaten in ages), which I didn't enjoy.

It was once, if you ate like that all the time, you'd feel it. And you can't tell in one day.

I did used to eat like that all the time, and had the physique to match. Other than that the big difference is not being a slave to sugar - not getting cravings and having to worry about blood sugar levels and all that.

Garlic - I just got tired of my own BO. Tomato and mushroom, I've read both can have negative body effects and if I remember correctly mushrooms are not recommended for w30. I excluded nightshades on my w30 just cause I wanted to see if there would be any difference.

My diet I suppose might be considered restrictive but it's pretty clean and most importantly does not have me being sugar's bitch ;)

To be clear, I'm certainly not going to eat the way I did this weekend permanently, it was just a splurge and I did enjoy not being Mr Difficult when it came to what food I'd have on my plate.
