I Miss You W30.

I am one week out from my whole 30 completion. And I already miss it! I am doing well, but feeling a bit bloated. I think even if I had maintained perfect whole30 while out of town this weekend, the fact that it was not from my own kitchen would likely have caused some disturbance to my system. I have had dairy and alcohol, and a teeny tiny bit of gluten free bread. Also some sugar. We planned a trip for the weekend after I finished, so that was good timing! And I was able to make good food choices (if not whole30 perfect). I chose to experiment with a small amount of alcohol. Thursday night, and friday night I had two, drinks high-end tequila with soda and fresh lime. I didn't have them on an empty stomach, and I ate high protein/fat to make up the carb difference. From a blood sugar standpoint I felt good. No puffiness or extreme hunger in the morning, or other symptoms I might normally have if there was even fruit juice involved. But, I noticed a drain on my energy, and mental fogginess... that did not recoup through out the day.

I happened to be spending the weekend with a girlfriend who is on  a strict elimination diet, and healing protocol for Hashimoto's disease. She sees a functional medicine specialist, and he is awesome! So I was reading all her stuff, and we were talking lots about food and health. And in the process I learned that there are four 'barrier' systems in the body, where dysfunction shows up. The gut, the lungs, the skin, and the blood brain barrier. And my symptoms fall right into the gut (which I already was familiar with) and blood brain barrier category! Alcohol being particularly detrimental to neurological balance. So. That was interesting.

I am ever closer to being completely finished with alcohol.

Dairy. Oh, my sweet sweet dairy. I had originally planned to only re-introduce raw milk the first week, but  ended up having some pasteurized cream (in coffee while traveling) and some cheese. Definitely noticed mucus response, and probably some of the bloating is from the dairy.

Sugar. The first day back, anything I tasted was sooooooo sweet I almost couldn't stand it! And while I wasn't having 'much', by about the 3 day, not soo sweet anymore. Amazing how quickly our bodies shift back. I do NOT want to return to pre-W30 sugar tolerance, and want to be as sugar free as possible.

Grains. Who needs em? Not me.

Legumes. Feel the same about them as grains, however, I don't react badly, so the occasional black bean at a mexican restaurant is probably not a big deal.

The plan now is to find a routine at home that is as close to whole30 as possible, with some raw dairy and some paleo 'treats' included but not daily (maybe weekly). And to plan another whole30 (or 60 or 90) in the near future. October may be the ticket.

Anyway, I am grateful to be learning and living! And I have so much more peace with my body at this time in my life... that all of these decisions are made with love, and acceptance, not fear or resistance. And that feels reaaaaaaly good.

I enjoyed reading your post as I will be done with my 30 days this Thursday & a little nervous about re-introducing foods also. I really don't want that fatigue and fogginess to return, it's been wonderful feeling so good!

Noticing an interesting cycle wanting to reappear. The I'm not so hungry for breakfast because I ate something after dinner cycle. Hmmmm, I like the flat tummy and hungry in the morning scenario better. Time to reinstate a few w30 practices... skip the 'dessert' and post meal snacks! Eat enough at meal times, and I won't need them.

I start back to a scheduled life tomorrow, as a full time student. Along with that, I will be joining a gym... I haven't done any strength training all summer, including while I was on the whole30. I am reallly excited to start lifting again! I am going to get a routine going on both of those fronts, and then pick a start date for my second whole30.

amstone, I hear you! I can easily see now, how some of us need longer than 30 days to truly heal. In fact if we have any thing more than skin deep going on (hormonal, digestive or neurological) we probably need longer. My friend with hashimotos' was told it could take six months for her body to fully heal. And if you think about how long we have been in our bodies, subjecting them to whatever degree of conventional food and eating habits.... is it really a surprise?! Hopefully now you know you have what it takes, and you can always return for a tune up! Best of luck to you!

  • 2 weeks later...

Thank you for the encouragement. My next weigh in will be 9/20 & I'm hoping to be down 8 more lbs. My goal is 2 lb. per week. I have over 50 lb to lose yet.

My first Whole30 I lost 12.2 lb so I'm excited to keep going. I've re-introduced a little dairy with no problems but I want to keep my eating mainly clean to continue with weight loss. I'm working out three times a week with a Cross Fit trainer doing things I never would have thought possible. That is one intense hour!

Otherwise I haven't eaten any wheat as I think that was my main issue. Only a little sugar which might be in a BBQ sauce or salad dressing when eating out. And cheese in salads & omelets, occasional bacon.

Just love feeling better, trying on old clothes that fit & being comfortable in the clothes I've been squeezing into for so long.

My name is Ann also, and my maiden name began with a B so I used to be Annie B!

Take care,

~Ann S.

So don't reintro stuff!  Sounds like you need the structure and rules of w30.  So stick to it!!  I know for myself, one exception turns into exceptions all day long.  I'm allowing myself one treat meal or dessert per week, and sticking to w30 the rest of the time. I think that will work better for me than trying to do "moderation".  I'm not very good with moderation, my Sugar Beast is strong.  Good luck!
