New to Whole 30

Hello.

I'm going to give this thing a try. I've talked with a couple of friends who both said that they have truly never felt better than when they completed the W30. I don't do well with rules usually but I love that this plan is about eating well and eating a lot (versus the typical gimmick diet where you don't eat much and you eat a bunch of weird manufactured stuff). I've been slowly cutting out processed food over the last two months but have not been strict about it. My main interest in the program is to have more energy, to see if my acid reflux goes away (currently taking a prescription) and to see if my depression gets better (I take supplements and run alot to combat it).

My only real concern is with running. Over the last two years I've transitioned from a guy who hated any and all exercise to falling in love with running. I currently run about 5 days per week (25-30 miles per week). I hope that that is not affected too much as I get used to eating better. I also have a concern about the logistics of eating this way while trying to not force it on my family. Thankfully, my wife is very supportive of me and is willing to try out the news foods I'll be making even if she and my son add other items that I won't be eating. She is awesome like that.

Anyhow, today is day one. I'm trying to look at this as a fun experiment where I get to eat a lot and try new things, not as a list of rules and don'ts. I'm glad to be able to use this forum to learn more and to see what others are experiencing.

Thanks.

Welcome! You can do it! It's true about the never feeling better! I felt great at day thirty and wanted to continue feeling great and see more results so I continued and am on day 47! What a great support system you have in your wife! My husband ate whatever I made and then had whatever he wanted other times. My mission is to slowly convert him from his non-paleo ways ;) ... My recommendations are to food prep, drink lots of water and buy the books "It Starts With Food" and "Well Fed" - they have taken the second half of my whole 30 to the next level!

I'm a runner as well (20-25 mile weeks) and I noticed a 2 week drop in performance when I first made the switch but the resulting performance and recovery improvement once my body stopped mourning the loss of constant carbs and eating the plentiful fat was well worth that two weeks. Just try not to have a race during those two weeks.

I have also seen a great deal of relief from acid reflux eating this way. I'm slowly narrowing down my last remaining (rare) triggers. I will say that I was a pretty constant tums popper a while back and when I first started moving into the realm of cleaner eating I saw some relief eventually from backing off the tums. Is your medication an acid reducer? Acid reflux is actually caused by stomach acid being too low not too high so those types of meds can make the condition worse.
