Paleo Pad Thai: SWYPO?

I made the Pad Thai (http://www.theclothesmakethegirl.com/2011/05/08/paleo-pad-thai/) from Melissa Joulwan's Well Fed last night, and oh my god.  So good.  Every ingredient is compliant, but I found myself wondering, how could something this delicious and decadent be good for me?  Is it SWYPO?  I have never once ordered Pad Thai because I thought it was the least healthy option--it is so AWESOME to be able to eat it now without guilt!  (Although clearly I'm feeling conflicted--hence, this post.)

Thoughts?

I love Well Fed's Pad Thai too!

I have truthfully never thought of it is as SWYPO.  There is nothing wrong with just plain enjoying your food!  Eating SHOULD be an enjoyable experience. My take on it:  I use it kind of as a reward meal.  You know you have reached the halfway point of your whole 30 and I want to celebrate!  Or I want to celebrate that it's Friday and have Pad Thai.  I don't make it that often but when I do I enjoy it sooooo much!

I feel this way about nom nom paleo's Korean Slow cooker short ribs as well!

This was SLIGHTLY problematic for me because it was so good I didn't bother to add the garnishes.... And then when I realized I was eating it standing over the pan... and quickly working my way closer to starting Serving #2.... I realized it was trouble!

So yes, it's crazy good.  But it's not SWYPO..... it might, however, be no brakes food!  So I recommend, if you're eating it on your own... put half in a container for another meal IMMEDIATELY! :)

Her pad Thai is still on my list to try, but it never occurred to me that it would be SWYPO food. I think of that as "here's a cookie, but it's Paleo so it's totally fine!" If that pad Thai is SWYPO, so are zoodles with tomato sauce.

I'm glad to hear that, Carlaccini - I got short ribs in my CSA this week and that's my plan for them! Did you add the fish sauce? I don't have any Red Boat in my area and won't have time to get it, so I was just going to leave it out.

I think enjoying the food on whole30 is the idea -- this way we WANT to eat this way.

I am 60 years old and all that "yummy" and unhealthy food just wasn't tasting good anymore. Food just didn't taste right. I didn't stop eating ice cream etc, because I had kind of given up on knowing what I should be eating, and didn't know what to eat, but it wasn't so good anymore.

I love that food tastes good and right again.

Sunflower seed butter is compliant????

so long as it's got no sugar :) I make the sunshine sauce with homemade almond butter & it's very good. Nut butters are fine on a whole30, just so long as you don't use them to make brownies or spend too many afternoons eating them from the jar with a spoon

Our Whole Foods doesn't carry Red Boat (apparently nowhere in our area does), and I didn't have time to order it. I left it out of the short ribs but added some extra aminos. After that, I got some anchovies at the store and used a couple in place of the fish sauce in the Nom Nom peach porkabobs I have marinating. We'll see how it goes!

I made it tonight with some subs... Used almond butter, since I didn't have the other stuff. Used pork instead of chicken. I had to add some shredded zucchinni since I didn't have enough spaghetti squash. It will not be SWYPO for me. It tastes nothing like phad thai IMHO. It was a yummy veggie stir-fry. Only ate one bowl... Not 2-3 like I usually do with real phad thai. So worked for me. Hope it reheats ok since I have left overs. But probably wont make it again.

Just so you know, I am 100 miles from the nearest Whole Foods, so I asked my local asian grocery store to stock Red Boat Fish Sauce. They now have it in stock.

I should totally ask my local asian market if they can stock it! There are 3 or 4 pretty close to me, so if one says they can't, I can move to the next!

Seems kind of expensive but here it is on amazon

http://www.amazon.com/Red-Boat-Fish-Sauce-40%C2%B0N/dp/B004M050W2

That's actually a decent price for a whole litre of the stuff. I bought my 500ml bottle directly from the red boat website for $10 plus shipping. I wasn't sure I could use it all within 2 years, but it's been less than a year and I've only got 1/4 of the bottle left! I use it on everything. It's about time to order some more I think...

I just have to add that last night I made this recipe and subbed half of the spaghetti squash with kelp noodles and it was UH-MAZING.  Like someone else said, it didn't really taste THAT much like pad thai but it was crazy delicious!  I will definitely make this again, but next time I think I'll grill shrimp and add that instead of chicken.

Happy Eating!!
