I think I screwed up...

I'm on Day 11 of my whole30, but I think I screwed up today.  I've done Paleo before but never this strict.  I went out for lunch with some friends I haven't seen in weeks and ordered an omelet full of veggies and sausage with a side of fruit and sausage and sweet potato hash.  I thought I did alright but I started having a headache about 30 minutes later.  I asked the waitress about their sausage and turns out there is brown sugar in the ingredients for the sausage! I was so bummed when I found out.  So onto my questions:

Do I have to start over?  Can I continue with the whole30?

The bad thing here is that I'm in the military and I will be going to combat school in less than a month so I don't have time to fully start the cycle over.  Should I still start over from day 1 and go until the 19th of September when I leave (24 days of whole 30) or should I just do my best to sticking with what I've done and eat pretty paleo from here?  I'm definitely going to be doing another whole30 fully when I get settled into my next duty station.

Depends how you're feeling at the end. It's your whole30 :) You could add 11 days & make it a whole41, or start reintroducing foods after the 30 days but stay off sugar for the extra 11 (e.g. a dairy reintro could be milk & cheese but not ice cream). It's probably worth getting your reintros mostly done before you go away, in case there's something that affects you adversely

Could there also have been something in the omelette egg mix? I know I've often added dairy to my mix, and people on the forum have mentioned some places also add pancake mix (eww!)...they could have cooked in butter, or another non-compliant fat..

If it was only the sugar, I'd do like roz suggested :)

I hope not, but it could be a possibility.  The most likely would be the dairy.  Either way, I'm going to continue on the thirty days and do what Roz suggested.  It sounds like a good plan since I don't know when the next time I'll be able to do a whole30 again, so I'll do what I can to find out what foods really effect me.

  • 3 weeks later...

RE: Stuff in Omelet mix-- I know IHOP is or was one who added pancake batter to their omelets. I remember a big thing about it a few years ago when gluten free really started, because there was a gal who got really sick eating there and found out after that her omelet had pancake batter in it. I have heard that if you request no pancake batter they will leave it out but, eww! I can't imagine!

Unfortunately, a lot of that meal could be unsafe (whole30-wise).

The fat everything was cooking in (could be butter, could be soy oil), if the eggs were "clean", if the veggies were seasoned before going in the omelette, the sausage (bread crumbs, sugar) in both the omelette and as the side, and the sweet potato hash (if they're not using fresh potatoes, most potato products are coated in wheat flour when they're frozen, to prevent them from sticking together, and if the hash was not home made, then it could have all sorts of crap in it).

My safe meals, pre-whole30 were eggs, bacon (I know it's not compliant now, but then I didn't care that much about the sugar hit, I was more concerned with the possible gluten in sausages), and fresh sliced tomato. I might have home fries if I could confirm they were house made and safe, but then there's still cross-contamination from the grill.

Like the others have said, don't start over, especially with your schedule constraints. Plus, you didn't eat that bad stuff _intentionally_, which to me makes a world of difference. :)

Good luck in the future! :D
