Day 5: Feeling Great!

Today is the middle of Day 5 on the Whole 30 or however many days I can make it past those 30 days.  LOL.  I discovered the Paleo way of eating almost a year-and-a-half go after seeing a friend post about it on Facebook.  I tried it for literally a few days...but quickly threw in the towel because it was "too hard" to manage with a nursing baby and every other excuse I could find.  LOL.

I continued to "half-ass" it every couple of months and buy new books, try new recipes, do a few days of meal plans and then we would "go out to dinner."  That was always a disaster!  I could never stick to the plan and would continue to fill up on bread and other not so healthy options.

I am in the military full-time and we a physical fitness test twice a year.  Even though, I was running on a regular basis, I could never get the time I need to pass.  It started to take it's toll on me...both physically and mentally.  I have issues with my knees, my ankles, my shins, my stomach, and was constantly tired and aching all over...no matter how much I stretched or used a foam roller.  I went to the doctor and was recommended for physical therapy (still need to make that appointment).

Two weeks ago, one of the guys in my office told me, "Hey, you and the two girls are going to this nutrition workshop next Saturday.  We want to see if this is something we offer Soldiers on the weight-control program.  I want you girls to go and take notes to see if this is something we should offer them."  I was excited and he sent me the information.  I went to the website and was super stoked when I saw that it was a Paleo way of eating.  At the same time, I was a little worried of being judged based on my weight (I wear a size 10 - 12).  It sounds silly to me now.  LOL.

The workshop was awesome!  They had free snacks, samples, and coupon codes!  Midway through the workshop, I bought what I was thinking would be "another Paleo book."  However, there were handouts and everything was explained in a way that truly made sense.  It was the jumpstart I needed and I FINALLY understood what I read in all the other books (which I am not knocking by any means).  It also helped to see real live people in front of me and hear their stories.  I could not wait to start the Whole 30.

Here I am on Day 5.  I thought I would pounce on one of my girls for chewing gum in front of me on Day 2 and seriously considered picking up a Gatorade on a park bench while running on Day 3 (now THAT is CRAZY).  LOL.  So far I have discovered how delicious a banana can be and felt so sinful eating two in a row on Day 3 (again....CRAZY)!  I feel great, I haven't had the horrible, daily knee pain that I have been experiencing and cannot believe how fast my belly is shrinking!  Also, one of my girls is doing this with me and we have been in constant support of one another.

I have been sharing the Whole 30 with everyone I know and cannot stop talking about it and how great my stomach and joints feel already.  I know it is still early, and I have had a few headaches and breakouts, but I know this is part of the detoxification process.

Thank you for reading this LONG post.  :)

That's great to hear!  I am also on day 5 and feeling amazing!  I did a Whole30 in February and tried again in April and made it 26 days, seriously it was the craziest thing, I had 3 donuts in front of me putting them in a bag for my son and scarfed one down without even knowing it!  It was like an out of body thing, LOL....I have serious issues with the sugar dragon, he kicked my butt that day, I couldn't even believe it!   Anyhow, happy I'm back off sugar, eating great and working out, life is good!

Keep up the good work!

I am also on day 5, and the best change for me is to be out of that battle with the sugar demon, the "I'll start tomorrow" mentality, the mind obsession that sugar demands! I have been saying I'm paleo for 3 years, but although I've made big changes, I've always gone back to the sugar and it takes forever to get back on track. It all starts with the free samples at Whole Foods... !

this is my 1st whole 30, I heard about it from the Well Fed book and blog, but never thought I could do it. But after the last month of August and all the bad eating, I wanted to do something radical. Because even when I'm eating Paleo, I'm eating a lot of nuts and a lot of dark chocolate and other paleo treats. So now I feel great, my challenge might come around day 10-15, but for now, it's one day at a time.

Hey mscarla - Thanks for sharing - yep that sugar dragon is mean!!  So far so good, Day 9!  We can make it through...I have made a definite conscious choice that after the 30 days is over,  I am either A) going to continue and make it a Whole60 or B)  I am at least going to stay about from white sugar and white flour.   I usually get so excited to come off the Whole 30 and devour half a chocolate cake or something crazy and I know that is not the intent for this program so I am going to attempt to do this the way I'm supposed to and change my eating lifestyle.  My exercise has improved and I am on my way to feeling better than ever.  Hope we can do this, stay in touch!
