It Starts With Food - confusion

Recommended Posts

I'm actually trying to avoid the forums for awhile, as I'm new and I got overwhelmed SUPER fast by reading too much. I started over thinking everything and I need to calm down.

Anyway, I have the cookbook, but I'm confused by some of the recipes in it... they call for milk and cheese and I thought those were no-no's? I really want to do this correctly and I thought for sure getting the cookbook would ensure that. Am I missing something here?

Anyway, I did search for a bit to try to find this answer but didn't come up with much. I apologize in advance if it's been answered before.

I got overwhelmed searching the forum at first too -- the search doesn't bring up exactly what I wanted to know and then I ended up getting lost in a million other aspects of everything whole30.

I learned to go to google and do a search like this

"site:whole9life.com" AND THEN with your specific QUESTION

type the whole first part "site:whole9life.com" just like that

The two books you should get when you have a chance are "It Starts With Food" by Dallas and Melissa Hartwig (owners of this site), which explains the whys and wherefores of the program as well as giving recipes and meal templates, and "Well Fed" by Melissa Joulwan.  Additionally, nomnompaleo.com has a whole month's worth of Whole30 approved recipes.

It is overwhelming at first, but please feel free to ask questions.  This is the most supportive forum I've ever participated in.

I feel the same way! I just started yesterday and maybe I was not prepared or I really stink at this because I am soooo lost! I don't know if its because I didn't buy any of the recommended books but I have no clue how I'm supposed to be eating. I see the shopping list but that doesn't explained how to eat, how many times, things like that. I was expecting that in my first email. Am I missing something?? Will I not be able to do this unless I purchase a book? I was so pumped yesterday! My fiancé got up at 5am to cook me chicken so I didn't wake up hungry and grab a bowl of cereal but that was all I had..... Chicken and arugula at 7:30am a handful of almonds at noon. Oh I'm also a mom of 3! I have a new baby and a 2 year old home all day with me so I also had issues eating yesterday for that reason. Anyway, if someone can point me in the right direction on how to have better prepared for this I would appreciate it!! Thanks in advance!! :)

I'd suggest getting a really good understanding of what you are supposed to be doing, eating, not doing/eating etc before starting!

You don't need the book, the whole 9 website is fantastic and has many articles on aspects of the whole 30.

As well as the shopping list, the meal template is vital:

http://whole9life.com/book/ISWF-Meal-Planning-Template.pdf

Print it out, stick it on the fridge, memorise it, refer to it constantly! Making sure your 3 meals (plus pre/postWO meals if you're exercising) fit the template will enable you to really benefit from the program :)

ETA: just noticed you've got a bub - if you're breast feeding, you'll want to be eating more meals (4-5, all fitting the template) to make sure you're getting the nutrients required for both you and your bub :)

Also, doing food prep in advance will help you get through with proper meals - there are plenty of threads on the forums with tips and suggestions for ways to get organised so you (hopefully) aren't caught out with nothing compliant to eat

You can be in a learning phase right now and not start the Whole30 until you feel ready. You can be doing a TestWhole7 or 21, or whatever you want to design.  If it were me I would just be putting together my meals as close to what I imagine is whole30 plus my things I know might not be right and just keep improving it everyday or every week.

It's like a kid learning to ride a bike, just keep dusting yourself off and getting back on, soon you will be zipping around  :D
