Gisele
Looks like there is a theme about starting September 1! Got back from vacation last night and just decided on the spot to go for it. I did it a few months ago and felt great and, felt like I was all alone. My husband is completely committed to the typical American diet and thinks if he doesn't have starch or sugar it's just not healthy. He has been a strong influence on our kids and they of course love what he makes. Tonight I made a healthy dinner and he followed it with toll house cookies and they all skipped the fruit that was beautifully washed and laid out. I realize I need support outside of my home and I'll do my best making them the healthiest meals possible and .... I can't change my husband! I can only role model and lay out all the best food and if they choose differently that's their choice. I am committed to feeling great and hopefully this will heal some nasty tendonitis in my leg ! jmh
My husband follows the typical American diet also. Sometimes it is difficult but he does support me. Once I realized how great it felt to eat healthy it was kind of hard to feed my family some of the stuff they like to eat. When I started all this I just began to take some stuff off of our shopping list. The kids have really not even noticed. For my family I feed them as many Paleo meals as I can but I do add rice and some other stuff to their meals to kind of fill the gap for them. I got rid of all juice and sugar drinks a long time ago and am working to get bread totally out of their diet. My husband got donuts the other day. I think the last time he did that was about a year ago. I put the donut he was eating next to my plate of egg scramble, avocado and mango and asked him what he not only thought was healthier, what actually looked better. The answer to him was obvious. My kids also see how I eat and it sets a good example to them. They help me make bone broth and other simple meals and ask lots of questions. Sometimes kids will do things on their own when they see a good example of healthy eating. Keep going strong! I can't change my husband either but I almost have him convinced to try it for 30 days. I just told him I really wanted him to experience what I did and see how it feels.
Gisele
What a great idea (about the donut). I of course do bring so much "extra" to this. They think he's the fun eater and I'm the boring healthy one wanting them to eat their veggies so I buy some of the junk fir them so they don't think I'm always the one saying "no". By son asked fir Swiss miss hit chocolate for his birthday! I guess I'm having a hard time thinking of how to prepare food for all of us without cooking separately too much (one child is very picky). If I were just cooking for me it feels like it'd be so much easier ....
Bet
My husband is on several medications for cholesterol and blood pressure. He has cut out a lot of carbs and will not eat HFCS, and that helped with his blood sugar (he was borderline type 2 diabetic). He is doing this W30 with me, but I'm not going to push him to be 100% compliant. Baby steps! However, if we are making a shared meal, I will not let him derail me. He got mad at me in the supermarket yesterday because I was reading all the labels. Who the heck puts corn syrup in sausages? I mean WTF??? Anyway, I found compliant sausage and he liked it. If I were just cooking for me it feels like it'd be so much easier .... I have to say when I showed my 8 year old the pictures of the donut and egg scramble he said the donut looked better. When I said "really?" he laughed and said, yup:) I also understand the picky eater. My 3 year old would live on goat's milk, blackberries and bread if I let him. I usually make the main dish compliant like Paleo meatballs, chicken burger sliders or whatever meat dish I have and the veggies. When I make the extra side like rice or a potato dish or something I usually make a double batch so I can just heat it up with a meal later in the week. I add a salad to mine and give the kids some lettuce leaves. They like the lettuce when it is just loose on the plate and not in salad form. I have also been talking to them about how vegetables grow and where they come from. I also let them pick some recipes from my Everyday Paleo Family Cookbook that they want to have for dinner that week and then when we have the dinner I make sure to tell the family who picked it out. When my 3 year old helps me make dishes I cut up some extra little veggies and say "try this!" and most of the time he does. Sometimes I do have to say "no" but when I do I try to say "try this instead" or if I let them have the cookie I tell them they can have the cookie if they eat this also. I have actually heard them telling their friends how I eat and sounding proud of it. I would love to have the time to make a small garden they can help take care of. I think they will be more likely to eat stuff they actually grew in the garden. With all this cooking I don't have much for that though:) My husband is on several medications for cholesterol and blood pressure. I agree with baby steps! I love the quote I see all over the web that says "no matter how slow you run you will still be lapping everyone on the couch". You should see me at the store with my 3 kids reading labels and growling about what is in stuff. SO frustrating! Took me forever to find salsa and diced tomatoes without sugar. Don't even get me started on soy in tea!!
