Becca6789
I was wondering if anyone else experienced crazy salt cravings during the 30 days? I am finishing up day 8, and my desire for sugar/sweets is completely gone. I don't usually have a big sweet tooth, but now I definitely don't crave it- the thought of eating anything sweet doesn't even sound appealing anymore. But my craving for salt is crazy! I find myself wanting to add unhealthy amounts of salt to my meals. Did anyone go through this or experience something like it? While I'm not technically breaking the rules, I feel like it's totally missing the point of the program if I just pour salt over all my healthy meals. Susan W
Were you by chance eating a lot of processed and/or fast food before your W30? If so, you were getting a ton of sodium. Don't be afraid to salt your food because it's the only sodium you will be getting except for small amounts in all foods. You may be craving it because you need it. Bet
Make sure you use a good salt, not the regular table salt. Sea Salt is good and also something called Real Salt. It has a lot of good minerals in it besides sodium.
Psirene
What do YOU feel is an unhealthy amount of salt? Perhaps that's something to work on, too? Also, if you're craving salt, maybe it's your body's way of trying to retain more fluids. Are you drinking enough water?
Becca6789
Thanks for the input! I actually rarely ate fast food before this- But I used to eat a lot of veggie chips and tortilla chips, so I know I already preferred salty foods to begin with. I think those are some great things to start doing- using real/high quality salt, drinking way more water than I am (since im honestly probably not drinking enough) and being okay with getting sodium that way since I'm really not getting it anywhere else. Thanks so much! I really appreciate the support!
Susan W
Just another couple of things. Iodine is added to table salt (often along with additives to keep it from clumping) so you may want to grab some sea snax to add to your template or nori to wrap meats and veggies in. My favorite sea salt is Maldons Flake. I love its crunchy texture and reasonable price.
jillian
Same thing happens to me during a Whole30 - it's a problem. I eventually notice that I start to substitute the sugar/fat combo (that I usually crave) for a salty/fat combo. I go overboard on salty nuts - sometimes adding more salt (yikes!). My guess is that it causes a similar beta endorphin boost that we used to get when we'd eat a sugar/fat combo. This is my unscientific theory... Becca6789
That's exactly what I've been doing! Adding salt to mixed nuts because i just can't get enough. And the nori idea is great! That'll help me mix up some recipes and keep things interesting. Thank y'all so much!
