MELYMOM
I am a newbie, learning the ropes of the web site and navigating the forums. I am going to start journaling my Whole 30 here to help with accountability, and ease at finding the posts. I have two friends who have done the whole 30 and encouraged me to try it, Trish and Roxanne. I am thankful that you peaked my interest. I am 50, mother of 4, 2 grandchildren. I have ALWAYS struggled with emotional eating, and have spent most of my life eating the wrong foods. The last couple of years I have worked on cleaning up my eating and getting in exercise, but have not made a great deal of progress. I have hypothyroid and over the last few years my doctor has upped my dose every 6 months. I started doing research, because I don't believe that it should be that way, there is a reason I feel tired, cant lose weight, even when running 15-20 miles a week. Around August 1 I started weaning out things, dairy and artificial sweeteners. I didn't realize I took in so much sugar. Islowly cut out the 1 piece of bread a day. I started feeling better, the brain fogginess decreased/ I officially started Whole 30 on Sept 11, on day 5 today. It has been a little scary adding in the fats. This definitely takes more food prep. I am thankful for all the resources available on the web. I made it through a dinner out at PF Changs (GF chicken, broccoli and spinach), and two birthday parties (blended some coconut milk with frozen cherries so I didn't feel like I was deprived). Yesterday I had low energy, was wanting chocolate or wine, I ended up making a small batch of coconut oil/cocoa chocolate and had a piece of that last night before bed. It didn't have any sweetener in it, but it helped. It is Sunday, today I will do some prep for the week, have eggs boiling now. I made paleo mayo the other day which I had in a tuna/apple salad and it was pretty good, so will use it in an egg salad for work this week. I like the Aidels sausage and have a package at work for emergency. Yesterday this is what I ate peppers, onions, 2 eggs, 1 aidels sausage tuna/apple salad on Kale salad salmon, kale salad piece of coconut oil chocolate Today spinach sauteed in coconut oil, 1 aidels sausage, 2 eggs egg salad, some chopped veggies sweet potatoes, ground beef, kale salad In the exercise department, I ran on Friday, can only do .5 miles without stopping, yesterday I swam laps for first time in a LONG time, did 45 minutes, would rest after every couple of laps. Today, I am going to research crossfit and see what we have locally, will walk/run and possibly do one of my many workout cds (Body pump, Chelane Extreme, Zumba) that have been collecting dust. I CAN DO THIS< I WILL DO THIS....

Moderators Tom Denham Posted September 15, 2013 Moderators Share Posted September 15, 2013 The best thing to eat when you feel a craving for dessert is protein and fat. By eating something dessert-like or sweet like fruit, you actually encourage the craving. Try it next time you feel a craving.
terryd
Welcome Melymom - I'm a newbie on day 21. It will get easier. It sounds like you are doing everything needed for prep. The hard boiled eggs have been a life saver for me. Having this forum and the people responding have been a great help! It has been a struggle for me to stop the in between meal snacks and the after dinner munchies. BUT I've done it. One of my goals was to eat the 3 meals or 4 if needed and no snacking! I feel good that I have done that for the last few days. Now I want to stop topping my meals of with something sweet.
MELYMOM
Cortney, welcome to the Whole 30, it looks like there is a lot of support here. You can do this!!! Tom, thank you. Today I had a teaspoon of fresh almond butter, that helped. I have realized I used to chew a lot of gum as well. I have never given up sugar in my life, I went to splenda, then went to stevia the last couple of years, I am looking forward to seeing what I feel like once my system has gotten rid of many years of eating sugar and all the other poor food choices. Do you have any suggestions for "snack"? I want to be prepared for the work week. My weakest time as far as eating the office chocolates that are everywhere is about 3 or 4 in the afternoon. I know we are supposed to try and avoid snacking, but I want to be prepared in case. I will make sure I eat a good lunch with some healthy fats to help with it. I made egg salad with paleo mayo, 3 eggs, onion, celery, green pepper and cilantro, salt, pepper, and will eat on top of a kale salad, I am feeling hungry tonight, that thought of wether I am hungry enough to eat fish and broccoli came to mind, so holding off and drinking more water. Was pretty tired again today, muscles felt drained, lack of energy, which according to the book is my body converting to burning fat instead of the glucose/sugar I always have had in my system. Thanks for the input, have a great night everyone.

Thanks for the input, have a great night everyone. I found the best way to prepare for "snacks" was to not prepare them - they are discouraged, but if I'd planned for them, I most likely would have eaten them. What you can do in the first few days is overestimate you meal sizes, particularly in relation to protein and fat. Go for at least the upper limit on the meal template. At your meal time, eat your meal evenly (a bit of all three elements) - if you can't finish it, you'll have a perfect mini meal for later on, if you do finish it, you'll likely be satisfied until your next meal! MELYMOM
Thanks Amberino. A lot of it is getting away from the eating 5 mini meals a day that I have been doing for the last few years. Thanks Terry D ;-) TOday I repeated yesterdays breakfast of 1.5 cups sauteed spinach, 2 eggs and an Adells sausage Lunch - egg salad made with paleo mayo, onions, celery, cilantro and green peppers on top of Kale salad Dinner - I am wanting beef, so I plan on stopping at the store and grabbing some steaks, will have sweet potatoes and string beans. Courtney, how did your 1st day go? I am feeling a little more energetic today than yesterday. Going to try Yoga for the first time right after work. Have a great night everyone
amberino21
I had been eating 6-7 meals a day for about 3 years prior to starting my whole 30, that's why I knew I had to not plan them as I was in the habit of needing food constantly! It was surprisingly easy to adapt and so good to not spend so much time on food prep and eating!
SimpleNotEasy
Hi Melymom, Ok - right there with you on the emotional eating. Sounds like you are making good headway this first week. Good job! I started my second Whole 30 yesterday. My goal is self-care and healing from emotional eating. I will probably need some other help besides just the Whole 30, but I figure this is a very healthy way of eating which will only help me in the process. Let's support each other in the journey! Keep up the good work. ~Sara
MELYMOM
Goodmorning!! This is day 7 for me, I overslept and didn't hear my alarm clock and felt like I was hit by a mach truck with a sore throwat when I got up...uggg, Guess this is where things are being killed off and my body is switching to fat burning mode. I definitely had a victory last night. I had a Boosters Club meeting ,, we met at a lounge, and I ordered club soda with olives and lime. I really did want to have an alcoholic drink, but kept sipping away at my club soda, it was not so bad. It was late, and I had not had dinner, got home at 9 and cooked up some ground chicken with spices and ate it with zuchini noodles with a little coconut oil. This is probably a no-no, I had about a half teaspoon of coconut butter mixed with almond butter after dinner. Hi Sara, I would love to help keep each other accountable. Congratuations on completing a Whole 30, are you doing the second one consecutively, or did you take a break in between for the reintroduction? It is great that you recognize you need the self care and to work on the emotional eating. Mine has always been emotional and or mindless eating, I have been working on that for years. Have you ever done hypnosis CDs, they have helped me a great deal with the internal self efficacy, self love and dealing with emotional baggage, if you are interested I can share info on the Mind Body Fit Club with you. How did your first day go? I am also a mother of 4, but I have three boys, 30, 22, 18 and daughter turning 16 next month. They definitely keep you busy!!! They get more expensive as they get older ;-) I think being a mother is one of the greatests gifts we have. I have slowly been working on removing the processed foods that they eat so that they are eating healthier as well. Amberino - I have not planned the snacks, can see how planning them would reinforce eating more and wanting to eat. I have to be better at preparing more food, and having more at work. I am not as prepared as I should be at work today for lunch and am worried I might be hungry later today, although I do have some frozen veggies I can eat if that happens. I also need to plan for the post workout/preworkout food, which I have not done. Day 7 meals: B: coffee with coconut milk, 2 eggs, left over ground chicken and sauteed spinach in coconut oil L: 2 Adells sausages sauteed with my kale salad, never sauteed it before, but I don't have any vinegar/dressing for my kale salad but do have coconut oil....If I get hungry I have frozen veggies I can microwave D: WIll be chicken, sweet potatoe, zucchini and tomatoes. Hope you all have a great day!!

I have never gone this long without sugar, I CAN DO IT!!! I am sick with a virus/cold and feeling pretty lousy, looking forward to that Tiger Blood. Today I plan on going to Farmers Market, stocking up and finding sugar free bacon and grass fed butter. I have no appetite right now so really don't know what I will be eating. Yesterday's meals B: 2 eggs, pineapple, coconut, cashews L. Salmon, celery sticks Lara Bar----that was tooo good, I better be careful with those D Ground turkey and veggies stir fry S 1/2 avacodo SimpleNotEasy - how are you doing? I know it can be hard to eat/prepare food when you're not well, but try to stick to the template - you need the nutrients from the vegies to help your body recover! Using lots of garlic/ginger/chilli/lemon - perhaps in a vegie stir fry - will also help (Sugar isn't fantastic, so try and stay away from the lara bars)
SimpleNotEasy
Thanks for stopping by my log. Came back by here to check in you in more detail. I have never tried hypnosis (neither CDs nor live) for treating emotional eating. Tell me more about your experience. So you know the life of a mom of 4... the blessings and the challenges. I'm very grateful for my kids. Right now, I am at the point that it is hard to keep enough food in the house. I go to the grocery store almost every day. My kids don't eat super-well, but they also don't eat terribly unhealthily. But they are old enough that they must "buy-in" - I can't make them eat as I'm trying to do without prompting full out rebellion, I can influence most by what I make for dinner every night and what I am willing to buy for other meals and snacks. At this point, I've got hydrogenated oils and MSG out of their regular intake, and they eat healthier versions of junky snacks. Baby steps. Good on ya for sticking with it even when you are sick. Hope you improve quickly & get a chance to rest more over the weekend.
MELYMOM
Amberino - I suppose that even though the Lara Bars are made with compliant foods, it is a dense calorie packed, fructose packed snack. I am working on trying to limit my fruits to once a day. When I ate the Lara bar I was feeling lousy, knew I needed more calories and not wanting to "make" something extra. A better choice would be nuts, right? Hi Sara, thanks for stopping by...I get the frustration of having a hard time keeping food in the house. My groceries always seemed to be my biggest expense, especially when you are trying to eat somewhat healthy. For a couple of the years I had two stepkids here as well. It is easier now that the kids are older, they help themselves most of the time, but like you said, you have some control on what is available. As far as the hypnosis cds, I came across MBFC almost two years ago when I saw a video on AOL of a gal named Jaylene Welch who had a lot of the similar emotional baggage that I had and she lost 100+ pounds, I will see if I can find that link and sent it to you, as well as the other so you can look for yourself It is a program in which you work from the inside out , answer some really tough questions, journal and work through your emotional baggage that keeps you from being who you really can be. There is a set of hypnosis CDs that go along with the journaling called FIT sessions that you listen to at night, or whenever. This helped a great deal with self confidence, self talk, etc. Each week there is a coaching call with a new topic, and you have a chance to bring up any issues or questions you are have. There is a private FB support page as well where you can interact. I have made some very good friends there. It has changed my journey significantly. I have been able to work through things from my childhood, previous marriages, forgive, forgive myself, continue to gain self confidence and do things I always wanted to do, but I was not because of fear or lack of self believe and self worth. De'Anna Nunez is the founder, amazing woman, very sincere and real. I am thankful that I came across the program. I went from barely able to run a mile to doing a few half marathons and a full marathon last September. I am feeling better today. Going to attempt a run/walk. Yesterdays meals Breakfast, my favorite so far - Sweet potatoe hash browns made with sweet potatoe, cup of spinach, garlic, pepper salt, sauteed in coconut oil with two eggs. Lunch Left over ground turkey and veggies, two heirloom tomatoes with paleo mayo Dinner Port chop, sauteed summer squash, onions, tomatoes, a half teaspoon coconut butter mixed with half teaspoon of almond butter. I am noticing that my skin is dryer than normal, scaly like. I am getting plenty of fats and water, does anyone have any ideas what could cause this? Have a great day

MELYMOM
Hi Sara. The last few days have been so busy, I am on day 17 today, I really doubted myself when starting the whole 30, I didn't think I could make it that long without eating sugar or grains, or snacks. Yesterday was the first day I had a true hunger issue. I have stayed 100%. patting myself on back. I am sorry this is not very personal, but thank you all for sharing and being here. Yesterdays meals B: Pumpkin pancakes made with 2 eggs and about 3/4 cup pumpkin and spices, topped with teaspoon almond butter L: Left over chicken curry soup made with organic chicken broth, chicken breasts, coconut milk, peppers, onions, zuchini and spinach D: Shrimp stir fried in coconut oil with peppers, onions, zuchinis------ Got hungry, had about 1/4 cup frozen cherries with a little bit of coconut milk mixed in, then remembered I had broccolini in the microwave I forgot to eat with dinner I came home to find my daughter had made homemade chocolate cupcakes, caught myself wanting to put my finger on the icing but didn't do it... Hope you all have a terrific day
amberino21
Remember that paleofying foods isn't part of the whole 30 - pancakes aren't part of the program, despite being made with compliant ingredients! Perhaps save those for after your whole 30..
SimpleNotEasy
Hi Mely Mom, Good for you resisting even a lick of icing. Old habits die hard and can be almost unconscious, so that shows some good awareness on your part. Triathlon training sounds fun. I have done some of those a few years back - several sprint distance and one Olympic distance. Do you enjoy all three of the sports? I had never had a road bike before and I ended up really enjoying cycling. Now, I'm bothered by the issue of people texting and driving, so I resort to using the spin bike at the gym for HIIT from time to time. It's too bad, but just the way it is. Hope you enjoy the evening out with friends tonight! Keep up the good work.
MELYMOM
A bit discouraged, had to go get stitches, they weighed me and it showed increase of weight..weighed at home, yup...makes me wonder if I am doing something wrong, on Day 17 now, it has been so difficult for me to lose weight..How could i not be losing....I have been compliant..DO I cut down on fat, or fruit, or starch. I have been within the plans guidelines on food. I know the number is not supposed to be a focus, but that should be a bonus from this type of eating...I am not going to cave, pushing forward Yesterday 2 eggs, broccoli, sauteed in coconut oil coffee with coconut milk egg salad, paleo mayo, pepers, onions, celery, paleo pickle adelle chicken sausage with onions, double helping string beans
amberino21
Your reaction to your weight is exactly why you aren't supposed to weigh yourself during your whole 30. Firstly, it's not a weight loss plan. Your body may be going through changes in other ways. You're also not at the end of 30 days yet. You have just under 2 weeks to go - a lot can happen in that time. Are your clothes fitting differently? Have you felt other benefits? Do you feel satisfied between meals and have enough energy? If you exercise, are you fuelling yourself properly?
MELYMOM
Amberino, my reaction made reevaluate and realize how much value on place on the scale. This is a learning process. I did some reading of other posts, and that helped, including the one on Ride your own bike. When you have placed value on something like that number all your life it will take time to change. I have some tweaking I can do. I have only exercised 4 days of this week, my job is sedentary. I am going to up my exercise a bit, cut out nuts, and add more veggies. I do feel better doing the Whole 30, I am not craving sugar or carbs. There were a couple days this week where I was hungry in the afternoon,so willl add in a little more protein. I have abused this body for 50 years, two weeks is not going to make a huge difference. We are all different. The fact that I am hypothyroid adds to that as well. Yesterdays meals B 2 eggs, spinach peppers L tomatoes, paleo mayo, adelle sausage D compliant chicken/steak fajita salad, with avocado and paleo mayo L
