Unrequited love for food
Hello, I have Hashimoto's thyroiditis, I have been taking medication for a year and my doctor says my levels are correct, yet I still suffer from symptoms which is how I came across this diet. I decided to look for a more natural route to heal myself, I am on week 2 of the whole 30 (starting week 3 Monday). My questions so far are: did everyone else with this condition feel terrible the first few weeks of the diet? Some days I feel like I might not make it from my car to the front door as I am so exhausted? My legs are heavy and weak? Yet at bedtime I struggle to sleep taking up to 3hours sometimes. I also got terrible migraines the first week. Also I have started getting seriously bloated and gassy since starting the diet!! It makes me feel like I have gained weight not losing it. I am also hungry all the time (I am still breastfeeding my 22month old too, so could that have something to do with the hunger?) I am planning to do the AIP diet eventually but as I have only been paleo for two weeks with this whole 30 I thought it best to start with the whole 30 then move onto the AIP diet as its even stricter? Am I wasting my time, maybe I should just go ahead and do the AIP diet as I truly feel terrible and I am not sure this whole 30 is making me better? Any words of experience would be great!! missmary
I'm sorry to hear you are having a tough time of it. If you post a few days worth of meals we might be able to help more but here are a few thoughts: If you are hungry or low energy or both (which it sounds like you are...) then you are not eating enough. Ideally eat enough at meals so you are not hungry between them, but if needed you can add another "mini-meal" or two, or even a fourth or fifth full meal. Just make sure these are balanced with protein, vegetables and fat (not just a "snack" of fruit, for example). It is expected that breastfeeding moms will need at least 4 meals eating this way. Another thing that may help a lot is to include more starchy carbs. Make sure you include sweet potatoes, winter squash, parsnips, carrots, etc. once or twice each day. Guest Andria
Ditto what MissMary said. Have you read the Whole30 timeline? http://www.whole9life.com/2012/06/the-whole30-timeline/. The crappiness you are experiencing is clearly spelled out day to day in the timeline. Many people, who dont have Hashimoto's, on the Whole30 go through the same symptoms you are experiencing. I am in the midst of getting a diagnosis for my low thyroid symptoms, so I am by no means an expert, but from my understanding Hashimoto's is an autoimmune disease. I think it would benefit you to do an AIP Whole30 sooner rather than later. I would see what the moderators have to say, as well. Also, Melissa Hartwig wrote about a women's nutrition needs while breast feeding. You may want to search the Whole9 blog for that article; I think, there are some exceptions for snacking. I believe she suggests sipping on coconut milk throughout the day. Definitely don't skimp on food, if you feel hungry you should eat and do your best to follow the template. ETA: my sleep has only improved after 30 days of the Whole30. I am on day 34 (day 12 of "perfect" Whole30) but I had some mishaps in the beginning. If it were not for those my sleep may have improved sooner.
Bet
Let's see, you recently had a baby, your breast feeding, your thyroid is imparied and you just made a huge dietary switch. Of course your body is confused and not operating optimally. Eating more starcy carbs can help. Butter nut squash and sweet potatoes can be good. Also, if you are boated and gassy, try taking some digestive enzymes with HCL. Many hashi sufferers have digestive issues and need extra help to digest properly. We also need adequate carbs, another reason to eat those starchy veggies. It may take the whole 30 days for you to see any difference. But it will happen. Stick with it. Unrequited love for food
I'd like to thank everyone for their response! I am feeling better with the extra food and the extra sweet potatoes etc. Also I cut out nuts as I was snacking on them all the time. AmyS
Yeah. Eat more. Eat lots more. Four or five meals a day. Glad things are looking up.
