HopelessDreamer
I have fear about book club! I'm hosting on Feb 13. Normally, book club consists of pizza, dessert, and wine (of course). Since I'm hosting, I have to provide dinner, so it's not an option for me to eat before or bring my own food. I could always cook something, but we've got some picky eaters (pretty much the only acceptable meat is chicken), and it's a pretty big hassle to cook for a group in the middle of the week. So, pizza it likely is. But I have major anxiety about that! It's outside of my W30, which is fine, but what do I do? I could always load up on salad (which, depending on who brings it, is chock full of cheese and croutons) and eat a single piece of pizza. But what about dessert and wine? I definitely think I want to partake, but should I? What if I can't handle it? It would be nice to not freak out about things like this and just have a NORMAL RELATIONSHIP WITH FOOD. Gah! mk: YOU are hosting! YOU decide the menu...and what is wrong with making some chicken? Maybe brine it like in Well Fed, and grill or bake. Dont put any sauces on, pass them on the side ( for your picky eaters.) You could also serve pizza or whatever, but with chicken and salad, and maybe roasted veggies, you have a meal. And someone suggested pineapple: total yum! If you HAVE to serve wine, just dont have any. Happy eating and reading! p.s. don't adults who are picky eaters drive you nuts? I think past a certain age you should GET OVER the "eww, I wont even try that" BS....Just my humble two cents......
EvaK
Day 19 finished! My throat hurts, I am debating taking ecchinacea drops as they always help to nip an approaching cold in the bud, but they contain alcohol. On the other hand, if it gets worse I might have to take more medicine.
hayleymarie07
I've been having headaches too. Prior to starting my whole30, I was taking over-the-counter sinus medication every day. I haven't needed anything for a headache since starting, but I've been having terrible headaches for about the past five days. We've had nasty weather that changes at the drop of a hat lately (26 degrees one day, 70 the next), so I'm hoping it's environmental/true allergies, not whatever was giving me problems before. Frustrating. other than that, things are good!
Sklane
Has anything changed in your environment especially your bedroom? And if you don't want anymore eggs than eat something else for your meal 1. Any protein will do. No...no environmental changes. Same laundry detergent, no painting, no new clothing...everything is the same. I actually thought this morning that a nice chicken breast would have been nice to just grab out of the fridge and eat on the way to work. I will have to do something about that for the next few days... :-) It can be hard to break out of the "traditional what you should have for x meal" mindset. I think I had that revelation this morning! Learning all of this new food relationship stuff is pretty cool. Bonus...at lunch today, a co-worker thanked me for inspiring her to eat healthier. I think this is the first time in my LIFE that I have inspired someone to be healthy. That's a pretty good feeling! She has started a South Beach-esque diet and told me she has lost weight and discovered new healthy dishes. We have a luncheon at school tomorrow for the teachers and she and I were discussing what healthy dishes we were going to bring to make sure we could have things to eat that were compliant with our plans. It was nice to be able to talk healthy food with someone else. I've been having headaches too. Prior to starting my whole30, I was taking over-the-counter sinus medication every day. Tomorrow I think is going to be in the 60's or 70's again. Ugh. Come on already weather and decide if it is winter or spring.
Physibeth
The weather may indeed be it. I have a friend who can basically tell you what the weather will be tomorrow by the condition of her head.
Kelly79
mk_hammer - I agree with what other have said about serving good unprocessed Whole 30 compliant food for your guests. I've had friends who aren't following any plans try some of the meals I've made and they ask for the recipe. Take some of your favorites and have your friends try them out. I had a dinner party and made a Spaghetti Squash Bake It was a big hit, and I loved the leftovers. Your true friends will support you and should appreciate that you are sharing great healthy dishes with them. As far as Day 31+, I really have come to enjoy this way of eating. I'm going on vacation on 2/8. I plan to stay on plan with the exception of indulging in an alcoholic beverage a couple of times. My birthday is in a couple of weeks and my friends have been asking me about what I'm going to eat. I plan on eating a healthy clean meal because I know it will make me feel good. Will I have my favorite treat which is a chocolate chip cookie? Maybe I don't know. Depends on how I'm feeling. I don't know if it is tigers blood or what, but I feel great. My workouts are as strong as ever, and my sleep better than ever. It is all due to what I eat. I know different things work for different people, but I'm a believer that eating clean and following the Whole 30 principles is what I need to thrive. I'm sorry that there are some of you that have had some less than positive side effects. Keep at it. Know that we are all here to support you. karensa
Next question. Favorite music you like to listen to while cooking or exercising. Give us your playlist......Go! CBS
Next question. Favorite music you like to listen to while cooking or exercising. Give us your playlist......Go! I like to cook to Gilbert & Sullivan or My Morning Jacket. Confession: I haven't started exercising yet. I've got the kettlebell. I've got the Iron Core video. I've got a week of break (I'm a teacher) coming up. And now I've got a few W30 posts ago that provides a worksheet for establishing a new (old) habit. I'll get there (and since I know I've lost weight and inches, I'm sort of feeling like exercise is going to be the boost I need after W30 "ends"). @Chellie: I don't think I'm afraid of anything because I've got the posts to look over and so many more Nom Nom recipes still to make (Kalua Pork is already a classic in our family). I've got the resolve to avoid the crazy-making foods. I've got a support network, too. A very good friend of mine and my brother and a handful of his friends are starting their W30s thanks to me! Ok...plateaus scare me a bit. I've been looking at different sources including Chris Kresser and The Perfect Health Diet for info about losing weight. I've got to trust that when I need to, I'll have the resolve to cut back further to continue moving in the right direction (not looking for perfection or a particular weight or size). Toni
Argh! I had written quite a bit just now when my computer hiccupped and I lost it. So I'll start over. Hi Everybody -- checking in for Day 23. I'm doing well, and seem to have no trouble staying compliant as long as I have food prepared. I don't crave stuff I shouldn't have, which is amazing. I can tell my clothes are fitting different and a bit looser which is a wonderful benefit, although certainly not my focus. I just want to feel great! Sklane -- so sorry about your headaches. I've been getting headaches often too -- usually when I first wake up. As I wrote earlier, that used to happen to me when I'd OD'd on sugar the night before. I'm still feeling foggy-headed a lot and am tired. Last night I went to bed at 8:30 and got up at 7:30. I'm sure ready and am eagerly waiting my Tiger Blood. I'm sure it's going to take me at least a Whole60 to truly get there, though, as I've had decades of stomach problems and poor eating habits. Lara -- your tastes in music mirror my own. When I was married, I loved the movie "Immortal Beloved." I've always loved Beethoven, and the movie really resonated with me. I used to listen to the CD of the sound track so much while I was cooking that when my then-husband came home from work, he'd say, "Why are you listening to that AGAIN?" I also love classical piano music and do some of my best thinking, not cooking, while listening to Bach's Goldberg Variations. Cheers!
honeybadger
Day 23 and still suffering with a horrible head cold. The Rhino virus kicked my Tiger blood's butt. ugh. However, still eating on W30 plan. Was inspired by NomNompaleo's blog post today and made a spicy tomato soup to try and clear up my head. I realized it is just as important to read medication labels as food labels. There are some crazy chemicals in those medications. One decongestant actually listed shellac as an ingredient. really?!! Those meds never really helped me much in the past anyway. My only attempt at bone broth tasted more like dish water so I have to work on that for future illness ( which hopefully will be never!) Hoping this turns around soon and tiger blood returns. Keep up the good work everyone!
Kelly M
Thanks all. Now I have new material to listen to:) Pink isn't always appropriate when the kids are around. And speaking of the kids being around.... They have had cancelled half of their school days this year. Have I mentioned my kids? They have issues - autism, ADHD, precocious/obnoxious syndrome. Might this be why I am experiencing KATT this late in the game? Why I have not tiger blood but sloth blood? Why I'm not sleeping like a baby but rather like, I don't know, something that doesn't generally sleep well? I am eating very well. Exercising gingerly due to ankle and back issues by doing beginner yoga and Zumba.
rhed
Day 25. Snowpocalypse Atlanta. I'm actually worried about running out of veggies. I had a friend (native Atlantan) who reminded me to get my bread and milk yesterday till I reminded him I didn't eat bread or milk, lol. But yeah...I keep looking at my veggie supply and trying to plan out when I'll eat what till I can get to the store tomorrow afternoon (to give the roads time to thaw). Any other Georgians having to deal with this stuff?

I'm so thankful that me and my hubs are home (although, hubs did have to leave his car at a hotel nearby and walk the rest of the way to the house)! We are fortunate ... as long as we have power, we're good on food. Although, hubs did say this morning that he had "concerns about our toilet paper situation." TP usage level: judicious. rhed
Good to hear you're safe -- I remembered you were in the area. I was lucky, as my drive home yesterday only took 3 hours (for those not here, there are still people stranded 24 hours after leaving work). I didn't even think of my TP levels. *runs to check*
Carolyn
Ok team, I need some help figuring out these headaches. For the past week I have been waking up with a horrible headache. It usually fades mid-morning and I am good to go for the day, but then the next morning it is back. I tried adding more starchy veggies to my meals yesterday (sweet potato and butternut squash) but still had a headache this morning. Tried turnip last week and just can't do it. I tried...I really did. I am getting ample amounts of water. I haven't changed how I am eating over the course of this W30, so I'm not sure what started triggering these headaches last week. It was "that time" but that is over now. No added stressors. Just life as normal. Obviously something has changed to create these, but I can't figure it out and I am soooooo over these headaches. TIA for any help!!! Also, just as a side-note...I think if I eat another egg I will throw up. Literally. I cannot stomach them anymore. I had to fight to eat what I did this morning. Current Playlist = Sirius #1 Hits on the TV while cooking :-) I get headaches like that when my sodium is too low. Try adding a little more sea salt to your food...see if that helps. If they tend to get better once you are up and walking around..maybe sinus congestion? or caffeine w/d?? I also went through two bouts of a migraine attack during the last 30 days...not fun...and they lasted 72 hours.
Lcovi81
Ah, day 24. Still doing great. I have decided to start back on coffee tomorrow. I drink it black so won't have any issues with whole30. I quit on day one just to see how I would do without it. I am still finding I am tired even after a full 8 hours of sleep and my job is starting to be affected because of my lose of energy ( I'm a nanny for two very young children). Can't wait till day 37 because it is my 33rd birthday and I am making paleo chocolate chip cookies and drinking a beer. Hope everyone has/had a great day. We are almost there! This time next week we can all congratulate each other on a great whole30 experience!

Sklane
I found the culprit!!! Sinus congestion = no fun. But at least now I know what was causing the headaches! :-) Our teacher luncheon was today and everyone gobbled up my chocolate chili. I'm glad I snagged a couple of bowls when I did because there wasn't any left!!! I mean pot scraped clean! And of course it was the only compliant food there. But surprisingly it didn't bother me that I couldn't eat anything else there. AND from what I have learned through this process I knew to ask questions about how things were made and I knew that an otherwise compliant veggie soup was NOT compliant because the base was made with one of those soup-starter from the shelf in a box chemical and msg laden blocks of fake food. So I told myself 'no soup for you!' Lol! Hope everyone is starting to thaw out! Have a great evening!

My mother was here watching my daughter because she was sick and could not go to day care. Now she can't get back home. I'm having the veggie problem too. If we can't get out tomorrow, we may be out of luck. Fortunately the local butcher, that we can walk to, was open and my honey brought me filet to grill out. And yes, I did grill in 30 ish degree weather and it was good. Also, tp situation is good here. We get ours from BJs, so we always have tons. Marcealp
Checking in. Snow days here as well. Bummer. My music would be dance as well: Macklemore, Nicki Minaj, Beyonce, Kesha. I LOVE me some Pink! Old disco always gets my mood up too. I'm having issues with my sugar dragon again, but hanging in. I'm hoping to be able to gradually add in a few foods. Definitely will have some wine! Maybe cheese. i think I'll be most cautious about sugar. I hope to stick to the plan with only a few add ins occasionally. Greek to me
Hey guys... Sorry to be MIA lately. I've been reading along but it's been crazy busy on this side so haven't been able to respond. Still chugging along. Will keep going after the finish - that's the plans for right now. So, here's my learning: It's all in the recipe. And there's some pretty awesome ones out there. I am eating better....and I don't just mean quality, I'm referring to flavorful foods. Other most amazing learning curve. I love high quality black coffee. Starbucks is not high quality black coffee. This has been the most surprising thing yet. Really, who knew that there was a difference? I now know why Starbucks makes all those blended beverages. Coffee blended is awesome, even if not great coffee. But good coffee can stand on it's own. Having said that, the trouble is, there are a million Starbucks, and very few true Italian roast coffee houses. Sigh. Two steps forward, one back Wishing you all a successful few days ahead and getting to goal!

Jan2014
Day 25, really tough making breakfast this morning with fresh muffins sitting there for everyone else. I frequently ask myself , what is going to happen on day 31. Have to get my head around the fact that it is not going to be the end, but the beginning of a new way of eating. Yesterday I could have Killed Things, but got it under control. I don't see much improvement in sleep, Keep warm and carry on
rhed
Plan for day 31! It doesn't have to be scary, and it doesn't have to be a dive into crappy foods. I have already planned that this whole30 is more like a whole45ish or so because I'm counting my reintro phase as part of it. I have my reintro days marked on my calendar so I know what I'm eating when. Day 31? I'm going to have a hot chocolate with breakfast, cheese with lunch, and ice cream after dinner (Haagen Daz has chocolate chocolate chip ice cream with no corn syrup and no soy lecithin ). I'm already planning my meals for my reintro phase so I don't freak out and eat whatever (like I did after my first w30). I got to be exuberant with my veggies this morning! (I was a little worried yesterday about the supply.) Ready for another good snow day at home -- lots of knitting.
mk_hammer
Ok, question for y'all: how long do you keep leftovers in the fridge? I cook sweet potatoes on Sunday and eat them through Friday, so I'm up to 5 days. My hubs seems to think this is unsafe. What are your thoughts? Also, coconut milk. I open a can, put the contents in a tightly sealed container, and use the coconut milk all week. The can says it should be consumed within 2 days of opening. How long do y'all keep your coconut milk??
