SummerGirl
Starting a new Whole30 today. Just back from 2 weeks holiday in Portugal (very easy to eat paleo there) and all set for a brand new Whole 30 (I didn't do W30 while I was away as I wanted to have wine but I did continue to eat paleo and came back feeling great and without the usual extra lbs that can creep on on a trip! ) So today marks the start of my third W30. Looking forward to it! Breakfast was smoked salmon and scrambled eggs, then some blueberries and a mint tea. Lunch was tuna salad with lots of mixed greens, olives, red onions, tomatoes, grated carrot, hardboiled egg. Making lamb meatballs for dinner which I'll have with roasted mediterranean vegetables. Derval
Great that you didn't bring home excess baggage for your hols, good for you! Your days eating sounds lovely, and so much nicer when the sun is shining!
SummerGirl
Yes, the weather is great here today isn't it? So balmy-makes a change!
EllieBellie
Oooh, holiday in Portugal sounds lush. Welcome back to W30! I agree that there is nothing so good as coming back from holiday feeling truly refreshed and healthy. I once went to Istanbul where they served fresh fish without chips, potatoes or rice; it's the only holiday where I've actually lost weight! SummerGirl
Thanks EliieBellie. They had the right idea in Istanbul alright! I ate a lot of lovely fresh fish in Portugal too, with lovely big mixed salad. It's funny how you really don't miss the stodgy sides at all-I'm eating paleo since April and it just comes as second nature now to say 'no thanks' to the fries/rice/pasta etc. Yesterday's meals went as follows; Breakfast was two poached eggs with black pepper and paprika and grilled cherry tomatoes. A peach. Lunch- salad with fresh salmon fillet, rocket and other mixed leaves, tomatoes, olives, peppers, grated carrot, half an avocado. Snack-an apple Dinner-Thai red chicken+vegetable curry. Had planned to make the Marbella chicken but didn't get out to get the last couple of ingredients so worked with what I had in the house instead. Derval
Did you have a nice day in Marlay? We went to Ardgillan. Fab out there today-we all enjoyed it! It was great, met up with 2 other mums from school and the kids played nearby while we chatted. It was pretty warm!
SummerGirl
Yeah, it was warm yesterday alright-makes a welcome change! So much easier to keep the kids easily entertained in the sunshine. I'd happily decamp to somewhere like Portugal for the entire summer if I could. Just need a little lotto win to fund a bolthole in the sun! So today's food; Breakfast-two poached eggs, grilled cherry tomatoes, wilted spinach Lunch-grilled chicken (Well Fed's 'best chicken' recipe-very tasty!) and big mixed salad. A peach. Dinner-striploin steak, asparagus, green beans, sweet potato
SummerGirl
Welcome home and welcome back! Thanks Meridith! Had a strange day yesterday in terms of cravings. Up to this, I've been happily pretty much craving-free while on Whole30, but yesterday I had a serious hankering for crisps and chocolate. I didn't have any but I didn't like the hankering! It's easier when the cravings stay out of it. I think part of the problem was that my portions were too small yesterday and I didn't have enough good fats either so I was probably a bit hungry. Will remedy that today!
Derval
I was the same yesterday (probably why I had those super sweet dates!), I woke up in the morning just wanting my lemon drizzle cake - bizarre!
SummerGirl
Bit of a craving filled day yesterday but I got through it and didn't opt for anything silly! Woke up this morning with renewed energy and enthusiasm. Breakfast-two hardboiled eggs, grilled cherry tomatoes, some rocket. Lunch-going to make tuna wraps using gem lettuce leaves and will have a nice mixed salad along with those (olives, peppers, carrot, tomatoes, red onion, capers), dressed with evoo and balsamic vinegar. Dinner- remainder of roast chicken I made yesterday and some ratatouille (which has courgettes, mixed peppers, garlic, onion, tomatoes and aubergine in it) If I need a snack I'll have an apple and a few walnuts. SummerGirl
All going fine today apart from the fact that I haven't eaten enough as have been rushing around all morning! Will remedy that now! I don't want hunger to sabotage good intentions.
HikeMoreTrails
Thank you so much for sharing the craving stuff, it reminds me that I can take action - POSITIVE action - to keep those nasty craving demons away and at the same time not feel badly for having the cravings (does that make sense?)... talk about it (vs denying that I'm having the cravings) and then adjust my behavior accordingly. <whew> there is a solution! I'm only a couple weeks out of ever even having heard of paleo, so you sharing your experiences is a HUGE help to me! Thanks!!!! Maggie
SummerGirl
Totally get what you mean Maggie! Better to talk things out, recognise the issue and take positive action! From my own point of view, I think I'm not eating enough which is sparking cravings. A few weeks ago when I was eating bigger more sustaining meals, I wasn't having any annoying cravings. So there's my issue right there. I'm going to take positive action and eat more (of the good stuff obviously!). I didn't intentionally cut back but just sort of slipped into eating smaller amounts for some reason.
SummerGirl
I'm just not taking the time to prepare interesting enough meals this week! The food I'm eating is all whole 30 stuff but I need to shake it up a little and try out a few new recipes from Melissa's great selection (love her theclothesmakethegirl blog). I've been busy with a few different projects (while the kids are at summer camp!) so have found myself racing around and not alotting enough meal prep time. It's silly because I techically have more time on my hands than usual but I've managed to fill it-albeit with productive tasks I've been meaning to tackle for weeks, and my gym visits have been great this week too. I guess there are some weeks you just feel more dynamic in the kitchen and some weeks you're happy to just re-fuel and get on with the next thing! Breakfast-scrambled eggs, smoked salmon, rocket. Lunch-grilled chicken fillet with salad (mixed greens, tomatoes, olives, red onion, half an avo, sliced peppers, dressed with evoo+balsamic). Some blueberries. Dinner-will be chicken again but in a Thai green curry with vegetables. Snack-a peach
SummerGirl
Haven't had time to update my log as we've been on the go the past few days! All going great . I've got my cooking mojo back so have been having really delicious and satisfying meals again! Last night we had striploin steak and shared huge big wok full of stir fried vegetables- I used asparagus, spring onions, peppers, green beans, broccoli, garlic, carrot, chilli flakes and chopped fresh ginger. The veg were super delicious-hubby and I both went back for more, although luckily there was just enough leftover for me to have this morning with my eggs! They were just as tasty this morning. Such an easy way to prep lots of lovely veg-very fast and always one of our favourites here. I'm looking forward to my coconut aminos arriving so I can add some-I miss my tamari a bit, but they were still delicious without it so it's no big deal really! We'll be eating out 'en famille' in a lovely place today where we can get nice fresh fish. They also have a lovely children's menu which thinks outside the usual 'kids menu' box with things like garlicky prawns or sliced fillet steak with green beans. They also have something else on the kids menu that you guys might be able to tell me more about as they sound like something American to me-called a 'pail of shrimp poppers'. Any ideas? I'm assuming maybe they are shrimps in some kind of a light tempura batter or something? Not Whole30 fare I know, but just thought it sounded like an interesting little option for a children's menu (well for here in Ireland anyway where the kids menu food is generally awful stuff-chicken nuggets or sausages and fries etc). Public holiday here today so hubby off and we're planning a walk on the beach (weather permitting!!) with the kids before our earlybird dinner later. Derval
Sounds like you have a lovely day ahead - Greystones? I have the most awful period cramps! I haven't had cramps in years , wtf? We were planning on doing Killiney hill or the sugarloaf today but I just feel too sore so dh was very kind & has just left to go up the sugarloaf with the 2 kids on his own. OMG empty house for hours!! Will get myself sorted with my lavendar hot wheat soother thing & just relax for the day (with brief moments of worry about them meeting with some accident....) jhmomi
Derval- liked your post. Good to be kid free. Not the cramps. Feel better soon!
SummerGirl
Hope you felt better as day went on and that the wheat lavender soother pack helped the cramps (so wheat is good for something, eh?! ) No, wasn't Greystones today-we actually took a spin up the coast to Bettystown beach and on afterwards then to this place http://www.easternseaboard.ie/ It was lovely! All enjoyed our meals. I had grilled tiger prawns with lemon, garlic and herbs and a side of green beans and sweet potato. It seemed W30 compliant anyway. Hubby had delicious crab claws and the children went for the fillet steak and fries option! Nothing like the sea air to give everyone good appetites! Derval, hope your gang enjoyed their walk up the Sugarloaf and had a fun day!
Derval
That sounds like a lovely place Summergirl, we must check it out ourselves.
SummerGirl
All going fine here! Nothing strange or startling to report really-just ticking along! Had 2 eggs and some sweet potato for breakfast, plus some blueberries. Lunch was smoked salmon and a big salad of mixed greens, tomatoes, half an avocado, olives, peppers, carrot, red onion, dressed with evoo and balsamic. Had some raspberries with a little coconut milk after my salad. Dinner was lamb loin cutlets with loads of stirfry veggies.
SummerGirl
Wow it's ages been ages since I updated my log! Finished my Whole30 last week. It was my 3rd Whole30 and to be honest it was very easy to do as it just felt like regular everyday eating to me as I'm so used to it now and it's my new normal. I even lost track of the days and didn't find myself counting down-in fact I was at day 34 before I even realised my W30 was technically finished! I'm glad I did three Whole30 s so close together as it really helped to consolidate the new healthy habits. Haven't been doing too much off-roading since though I have enjoyed a couple of glasses of red wine and I had a crepe on Sunday when we were out for lunch. The red wine gave me the usual sinus congestion symptoms it always does, but from time to time I'm happy to put up with that! (like when there's a yummy Saturday night feast of a juicy striploin steak on my plate ) I have a few celebratory nights and lunches out coming up soon for my 40th birthday so I won't commit to another Whole30 right away. I don't plan on making major reintroductions though as I love eating this way and feel great. It's nice to be turning 40 feeling better than I did at 30 .
