Day 23 - tiredness and cold sores

Recommended Posts

Hi,

New to posting but on Day 23 (started July 1st). Just wondering if tiredness should still be expected at this stage? I've been gluten free my entire life, dairy free since early May and was basically following the principal concepts before my Whole 30, just without the fine-tuning with regard to seed oils, hidden sugars etc, so I haven't suddenly gone from a huge amount of carbs to just veggies.

I am surprised at how wiped out I feel - I have been sleeping both longer and better than ever, but I have little energy to workout. I have small kids and I'm home with them during the summer so I am reasonably active (more so than pre-Whole 30, when I worked a desk job 30+ hours a week) but I wake tired, feel like I *need* my morning coffee rather than enjoy it, and find it hard to muster the energy to do my basic 3 day a week 20 min weight work out at home, let alone throw on proper gear and get to the gym.

I am going with this for now as I feel like my body is still recovering from pre-Whole 30 stresses (on Day 5 I got a massive cold sore, which physically drained me too - I typically get cold sores post-stress, but I think I can feel another one starting to come now). Just wondering if I am alone in still feeling tired at this stage and whether I can expect a change in the near future? Any tips to raise energy levels would be appreciated.

Anyone else had cold sores as a side effect???

Thanks

D

P.S. On the positive side, I am definitely leaning out and I am really enjoying the food - I'll be sticking to this long-term, with a much better understanding now of the food items that are actually worth breaking it for in the future....

What are you eating? Are you getting the full amount of protein* and fat** at each meal?

*1-2 palm sized portions of meat or fish or as many eggs as you can hold in one hand.

** 1-2 thumb size portions of solid fat or 1-2 tablespoons of liquid fat or 1/2-1 avocado or closed handful of nuts or open handful of coconut flakes or olives

Breakfast is at least two eggs, usually some meat and various veggies, cooked in coconut oil or with coconut milk added to the egg mix if scrambling/omelette. Black coffee (sometimes with coconut milk but something is disagreeing with me, causing IBS symptoms, so unfortunately I think I need to cut back on the coconut milk, it s a FODMAP food)

Lunch is a large salad with fish or meat, 1/2 an avocado most of the time, olive oil dressing

Dinner is meat and at least two different veggies, cooked in coconut oil, dressed in olive oil.

Snacks are various nuts, coconut flakes (which again I may need to cut back) berries, clementines or melon, or cold meat from leftovers. The equivalent of larabars sometimes if I am out and about.

I don't feel like I am eating too little but maybe there is a gap?

Thanks

Hi D, sorry to hear you aren't feeling the best :(

Re the cold sores, this might be worth a listen to

http://balancedbites.com/2012/04/podcast-episode-35-mineral-deficiency-hormonal-issues-skin-hel.html

I definitely find I'm not leaping out of bed in the morning (as some w30'ers report) by any means, even with the later mornings (8.30 today!). What time are you going to bed at? There's a good article about "sleep hygiene" HERE

Hope you manage to pinpoint the problem, your food intake looks fine to me. Maybe log for a week and ask one of the mods to have a look?

Thanks for that podcast link - I've downloaded it now

Getting asleep by 10:30-11pm latest, never waking before 7:15 earliest - this compares to rarely getting asleep before 11am, having an alarm set for 6:05 five days a week and always waking before that, which was my pattern pre-July.

I'm *really* enjoying not having to log my food so I think I'll hold back on doing that for now - hoping it is the cold sore onset that is causing the wipe out for now, but I guess I will have to look into my cold sore triggers in a bit more depth.

Thanks

D

Thanks for the tip re the nuts - I'll keep an eye on that consumption.

The podcast recommended L-Lysine supplements once the tingle starts - that was my usual treatment protocol already. This new one seems to have dried up already and I don't feel as wrecked so maybe the tiredness is fully linked to the cold sores, plus the fact my lifestyle is less sedentary than it has been.

My only known triggers to date were post-stress (rather than sunshine or a particular food, that I know of) - maybe both are signs of different stresses leaving my body at various stages during the last 25 days as I fully "detox", particularly from all added sugar.

Thanks for the responses.

  • 3 years later...

Sorry to bump such an old post but im having the exact same issue as this member.

I was also pasta/rice/bread/gluten free before starting my whole30. I then also cut out sugars are milk at least a week before i officially started however on day 14 i got a cold sore which i usually only EVER get when im really really run down and my immune system is at its lowest. After about a week it went away and 2 have replaced it.

I read the comment about fats and proteins but my diet is very well balanced. Has anyone any idea how i stop this happening? Whole30 is hard enough but ive now got people reacting like "oh you look terrible, i think you should stop this diet"

:( :( :(

I'm so sorry to hear you are having difficulties... as a cold sore sufferer myself, I totally feel for you!  I get coldsores when I let my lips get too chapped, when I have a fever or a sunburn and sometimes just because I think the coldsore virus likes to screw with me...

That said, maybe you can give us a rundown on what you've been eating including portion sizes and we can see if there's any tweaks to make.

I'm so sorry people are saying you look terrible... I don't think going back to pasta, rice and bread is going to make you look or feel any better so my advice there would be to smile and nod because even with this minor setback, you're going to come out of this feeling amazing!
