Emily T
I got a bottle of gourmet maple balsamic vinegar for Christmas. I understand that things like champagne vinegar are in - because they do not actually contain alcohol. And other sweet vinegars (such as strawberry, fig, etc) are approved because they do not have added sugar. The thing is, I cannot tell if this balsamic has any sugar or added maple in it. I think its just infused. But, there are no nutrition facts or ingredients listed so its hard to tell. I tasted it pre-whole30 and it doesn't taste terribly sweet to me - but who knows. Anyone? GFChris
Did you try contacting the manufacturer to get the ingredients? If maple syrup or other sweeteners are in it, that would make it a no no for a Whole30.
Moderators Tom Denham Posted January 2, 2014 Moderators Share Posted January 2, 2014 Infusing the balsamic vinegar with maple is what makes the vinegar not okay during a Whole30. Even though the maple does not make balsamic vinegar much sweeter, it is itself a form of added sugar. This is a technical point, but we don't make any room for an ingredient being "just a tiny amount."
Emily T
Got it. I will hold off on it until February then. Thanks for the clarification!
