Laurie Gator
I am currently on Day 10 of my Whole30. Yesterday, I had the Queen Mother of all migraine headaches. I have been the lucky recipient of migraine headaches since I was about 8 years old. Most of the time they are triggered by hormonal changes but this one was not. The best way to describe it was like someone took a 2x4 to the left side of my face. It hurt to move facial muscles on the left side and it hurt to move my eyes back and forth (like someone was stabbing an ice pick really hard behind my eye into my brain.) Needless to say, I did break the rules and took an nsaid (and later, a hydrocodone since the pain was a 9 on a 1 to 10 scale. Yes, my broken leg and childbirth were less painful). Does anyone have suggestions on what I can do the next time this happens? I did not take my normal path of eating Dark Chocolate or eating a ton of sugar to make it feel better. I did increase my carb intake (via sweet potatoes) for both lunch and dinner and adding an extra serving of fruit for dinner. (Cherries and a peach along with 4oz grass fed beef, sweet potatoes, mushrooms, brussels sprouts, kale, onions and califlower cooked with some coconut oil). Thanks for any advice! Colleen Roy
I had one killer headache while I was on my first whole30 and I too broke the rules and took a tylenol after trying to deal with it for about four hours. I hydrated, laid down in a dark room, ate, even drank a cup of coffee...no change. So I took a tylenol and that was that. I didn't feel any negative effects from it. I know they say we aren't supposed to, but gosh, when you've tried to deal with it naturally and nothing works.... I hope it doesn't happen to you again-maybe eating this way will help alleviate or lessen the pain for you? Good luck!
CaseyD
Are you getting enough magnesium? If dark chocolate helps your migraines, this may be why. Also, are you taking in caffeine still? I've gone through periods of caffeine hurting my head, when usually caffeine seems to help. Migraines are so tricky because of the many things that can be contributed to them. Laurie Gator
I will try the Mg suppliment. I figured with all of the dark, leafy greens I have been eating that I was doing well but I can always try adding some in with a suppliment. I was never a coffee or soda drinker before my Whole30. I have had some cups of iced tea but maybe 1 glass every 3 or 4 days (unsweetened)
FitTiff
Putting ice on your head will help relieve the pain while it's on. I often sleep with ice packs during migraines. Hope you're feeling better.
Lyn1
I can sympathize. I also get migraines and they are awful. I'd say stay away from coffee. even decaf will set mine off. They say that if you avoid caffieme all together, you can use it to help aleviate when you do have a migraine. I also found sweet potatoes helpful. i don't know why but carbs make me feel better too. I think Tylenol is allowed on the w30. It's not an NSAID. It's ibuprofen that's not allowed. also, Intook my Maxalt twice during my w30. Not sure if that's allowed r not but I was in agony and I have to look after a 1 year old, so I kinda had to.
