Moderators Tom Denham Posted February 8, 2014 Moderators Share Posted February 8, 2014 Yes. This set of ingredients is acceptable. As a reminder, almond milk is basically fat and flavor. You are not getting meaningful nutrition from it.
runninglawyer88
Tom, thanks for the reply. I'm moreso thinking about getting it for after my W30--coconut milk is a bit too expensive for things requiring larger amounts of milk.
froglegs
I'm not sure what quantities you are looking for, but a 14 oz can of coconut milk is 99 cents at Trader Joe's.
alexsjaan
Silk, huh? I had no idea finding a compliant milk subsitute would be so easy. I don't drink milk as it is, but I'm starting Whole30 soon and trying to nudge my boyfriend on board. The "no milk" was almost a dealbreaker for him. Thanks for sharing! Relayer
I'm on day 4 and just realized that my Almond Milk has Carrageenan in it. I guess Trader Joe's has a clean variety. Wish I would have seen this in a post but I'll march on
dustyhockeymom
I bought large containers of coconut milk at Trader Joes today for $1.99, which is less than the almond milk at my grocery store.
GFChris
I bought large containers of coconut milk at Trader Joes today for $1.99, which is less than the almond milk at my grocery store. Did those come in a carton or a can? If a carton, check for compliance: no carrageenan or sweeteners.
**Ann**
Wow, I never imagined Silk would have had compliant almond milk. I've made my own almond milk in the past, but I can't seem to master it and it doesn't taste as good as Silk's (when I've had it pre-paleo)
Glory317
Are you guys putting almond milk in coffee or using it as a fat in recipes?
runninglawyer88
Are you guys putting almond milk in coffee or using it as a fat in recipes? almond milk would not be used as a fat--there's a negligible amount. Coconut milk, on the other hand, could be used as a fat source.
Glory317
Thanks!! I dont normally have milk of any kind except for soy or almond in a coffee when out - im reading about all of these milk substitutes and I forget that other people actually enjoy milk
**Ann**
I don't use almond milk on my W30. However, I have used almond milk as an ingredient replacement in recipes that called for coconut milk. In certain dishes the subtle coconut flavor it identifiable by me and doesn't fit, whereas my palate can always accept a mild nutty flavor to a dish, so almond milk works for me. lovelyjenny
Silk Pure Almond doesn't have carrageenan in it. There's a great list of products that do and don't contain carrageenan here. I have it as a button on my iPhone I reference it so often.
dogmom
I'm so glad that the Silk brand is compliant. I prefer it to coconut milk in my coffee. Be careful to pick up the kind that is unsweetened as the sweetened/unsweetened are in close proximity on the store shelves.
VFDhaven
My only concern is the "natural flavors." There are a lot of really sketchy things that fall under that term. Basically, as long as it can be found in nature, regardless of what process it goes through later, it still counts as a natural flavor. If you think the almond milk might be affecting you in some way, that could be why. Beware, this is in herbal teas too! I saw another post on this forum about teas and natural flavors if you want more info.
dogmom
Glory317--Soy milk is not Whole30 compliant. Hopefully, you have not been having it in your coffee while on the plan.
jenski
Almond milk has lots of calcium in it, that's why I drink it (and did even before my Whole 30). It doesn't act like dairy milk in many recipes though because there's not much protein in it, so you can't always treat it like a dairy substitute. But it does have a nice flavor and it's good for your bones!
homerfrizzell
It would be interesting to see how much calcium is actually absorbed from different sources.
jenski
Homer, I agree. I had a dairy allergy as a child so I have never been able to drink milk; these days I can tolerate yogurt and cheese, but cottage cheese or actual milk makes me feel not-so-good. Plus milk tastes really bad to me, so I wouldn't drink it even if I could! There are lots of foods that have calcium in them, but the absorption can be affected by many factors. I'm sure if we Googled it we could find out just how much gets absorbed from different kinds of foods. I guess I was just saying that about the calcium as a response to someone earlier in the conversation that said almond milk is only fat and flavor. sylphine
oops just seen this topic having posted on another thread about this very topic- what a relief - ive been using alpro unsweetened almond milk with the same ingredients as the silk in my tea and to make scrambled eggs -
