second W30 starting 2/22

I'm going to start my second W30 on Saturday, and want to be more vigilant.  I'm starting my W30 log early, so I can keep track of where I'm at, and how I'm feeling and noticing any challenges that come up.  My daughter's birthday is on March 1st, and I'm usually the one to make the cake as well as a main dish, and I am a home-brewer, so I even bring the beer.  I may need to pass the baking on to someone else this time around, or perhaps I can make stuff for everyone else, and bring my own Special Food  to the party!  No one has ever complained about my W30 food options, so I might even make enough to share.

Time to clear out the cabinets of any off-limit stuff that's made it's way in.  Ditto for the fridge.  Looking forward to the second adventure!

Sadly I chose to "clean out the cabinets" by eating said forbidden food... as usual it made me feel like crap.  Looking forward to my fresh start tomorrow.

Bfast today:  3 eggs on bed of burger, sweet potato and spinach with Well Fed's avocado relish

Lunch:  chicken/apple curry, salad, red cabbage & apple slaw, 2" wedge of fresh coconut, and 6oz greek yogurt (sweetened no less...)

Dinner:  not sure yet

And my library called today to tell me that the book I requested, Well Fed 2, had arrived and was waiting for me!  Perfect Timing and HOORAY!  New recipes for my fresh start!  So pumped :)

Day 1 - I didn't eat enough food today.  I had several recipes but needed to pick up some groceries, which I did.  But then it ended up being 45 degrees and sunny, and I wanted to run outside, so I didn't really have an official lunch.

Bfast: 3 eggs, homemade sausage patty, 1/2 diced sweet potato, 1/2 cup spinach, 2 c black coffee w/coconut oil

sorta lunch:  3/4 can tuna with homemade mayo

Ran 3.9 m

post-run: 1/2 cup coconut water, 1/4 can tuna with 1 carrot

Dinner: Spiced burger saute with chard, gingered carrot/parsnip soup, roasted asparagus

Day 2:  Was not prepared for yesterday, but at least I have done a W30 before, so I wasn't panicking.  Of course babysitting last night, after Danielle invited herself, Michael and the baby for dinner really threw things off.  No skiing today, although it would be awesome.  Sunny and mid 30's.  But I have too much to do.  And Layla has a social invitation this afternoon at 3 to meet Hamlet (a pitbull therapy dog!!).  We'll meet at the park, but if there are other dogs there, I won't be bringing Layla in.  Maybe Hamlet will come for a walk on the rec path with us instead.  Not going to set Layla up for another dog park incident.

Bfast: 3 eggs on leftover spiced burger with 1/3 diced sweet potato and 1/2 cup chopped broccoli, 2 cups black coffee w/coconut oil

Lunch: 2 Applegate beef hot dogs, Creamy Tomato Soup, Baby Romaine salad w/balsamic vinegar & olive oil

Dinner:  Pork Carnitas, roasted rutabaga/parsnips

Day 3:  Feeling really good about changing my coffee habits this time.  As a coffee lover (decaf only please) with a hefty splash of light cream, this was the comfort item that I thought I'd have trouble with on my first W30.  I scoured the forums and discovered that folks use coconut oil (!?!?) and/or coconut milk.  I felt like I scored big when I found cans of coconut cream at my local Asian food store - it's 70% coconut meat, and has to be scooped out with a spoon, but it's not as thick as coconut butter.  Well the first time around I merely substituted coconut oil/coconut cream in my usual 3 large cups of decaf.  This time I have decreased to 2 regular sized cups of black coffee with a spoon of coconut oil only.  I bought a mini mixer (which is like a micro immersion blender) and voila!!  It works beautifully.  And I've made it to Day 3 without feeling like I needed to pull out the coconut cream.

I spent nearly the whole day yesterday on my cook-up.  I made Gingered Carrot Parsnip Soup, Creamy Tomato Soup (with coconut cream, no dairy), Stovetop Pork Carnitas, Roast Chicken (nomnompaleo-style), cauliflower rice pilaf, roasted rutabaga, parsnip and beets, and roasted butternut squash. Also whipped up a batch of blueberry breakfast sausage (http://blog.stuffimakemyhusband.com/2012/09/blueberry-breakfast-sausage-coconut.html) but substituted fresh chopped cranberries for the blueberries.  I'll test this out tomorrow!

Ran almost 3 miles this morning with Layla.  It was about 22 degrees, and all the puddles from yesterday were frozen over to black ice in many places.  It was a little hazardous, but when we ran on the road it was fine (except for the meanie drivers who won't share the road).  Layla hasn't had regular runs for a while since our weather has been so bi-polar or schizophrenic.  Thanks Climate Change for turning our normal Vermont winter into some kind of deep-freeze, instant thaw, massive snow MESS!

Bfast:  2 eggs, apple breakfast sausage patty, 1 cup of chopped veggies (asparagus, broccoli, onion, jalapeno, poblano) and 1/2 cup diced sweet potato.  2 cups of black coffee with 2 tsp coconut oil

Lunch:  Creamy Tomato Soup, Roast Chicken with sweet potatoes/carrots/onions, Baby Romaine Salad, 2" wedge fresh coconut

Dinner:  Roast chicken, roast butternut squash with coconut oil, orange glazed brussels sprouts

Argh - I missed posting Day 4!  Going strong, feeling great.  Skin (face) looks amazing after only 4 days.  Digestion seems better, although today (Day 5) I have morning gas B)   Had a good 3m run this morning - it was about 15 degrees, and only about 4 with the wind chill.  Once we got moving it was fine, although still lots of icy spots.

Day 4:

bfast: 2 eggs, homemade sausage patty, 1/3 of large sweet potato, chopped asparagus, broccoli, poblano, jalapeno & onion w/turmeric, 2 cups decaf with coconut oil

lunch: pork carnitas, roasted butternut squash with ghee, baby romaine salad w/balsamic & olive oil, handful of macadamias

dinner: roast chicken, orange glazed brussel sprouts, parsnip puree

Day 5:

b'fast: 2 eggs, homemade sausage patty, 1/3 of large sweet potato sauteed with chopped asparagus, broccoli, red pepper, jalapeno & onion w/turmeric, 2 cups decaf with coconut oil

lunch: gingered carrot/parsnip soup, roast chicken with roasted carrots, sweet potatoes & onions, baby romaine salad, 2" square of fresh coconut

dinner: tilapia with warm grapefruit dressing, celery root bisque with shiitake mushrooms, chard with pecans and cranberries, fresh coconut

Was very hungry late this afternoon/evening - had lunch at 11:30 because of 12:00 appointment, then didn't have dinner until 6:30.  Although I love fish and I know it's healthy, it's not very filling and doesn't seem to have staying power.  Or maybe I just didn't eat enough..

Day 6:

Sometimes when I see how much food I bring to work for lunch I feel like a food addict or a glutton.  I eat so much more than anyone I know!  And omg I love food, and am SUPER GRATEFUL to have found Well Fed and Well Fed 2 and NomNomPaleo among other incredible blogs.  My food is all GOOD food, super healthy, super nutritious and indescribably flavorful and satisfying.  I used to say that breakfast was my favorite meal, but now with so many mouth-watering options, ALL meals are my favorite :D

bfast: 2 eggs and 2 small cranberry bfast sausages w/sweet potato and 2 cups of chopped veggies, 2 cups black coffee w/coconut oil

lunch: pork carnitas, cream of tomato soup, orange glazed brussels sprouts, cauliflower pilaf, roasted butternut squash with ghee and wedge of fresh coconut

dinner: leftover 1/4 lb tilapia with grapefruit dressing, 1/2 cup roast chicken, 1 cup roasted vegetables, 1 cup celeriac bisque with shiitake, wedge of fresh coconut

It's now 8 pm, and I'm tired.  I still need to get my breakfast set up and pack up my lunch for tomorrow.  This weekend I'm not going to have much cooking time, or W30 cooking time, since I'm making a chocolate cake for my daughter's birthday and then going to her party on Saturday, and skiing on Sunday.  I'm planning to take Monday off for skiing too    guess running will have to be Saturday.  I sure hope it's not -2 Saturday morning

Thank goodness the exhaust repair was only $150.  My poor Saab is 19 years old and almost ready for retirement, but I just can't buy another car right now.  If she can just hang on for another 4 months, things will be much better.  She goes in on Monday to get the little fuel filter problem repaired, and hopefully that will hold her until late Spring, early Summer.  She won't pass inspection come August - too much rear fender rust.  It's okay - we've had a long and satisfying relationship haha, but no other car will ever compare.

Friday - forky Friday.  Fabulous Friday.  It's here.  I'm ready for a weekend.

bfast: 2 eggs with 1 cranberry bfast sausage (these are amazing - i'm making these again and again, love the tart niblets), 1/2 cup diced sweet potato, 1 cup veggies (asparagus, brussel sprout leaves, onion, red pepper, jalapeno) 2 cups decaf with coconut oil

lunch: roast chicken with roasted carrots, sweet potatoes and onions, "cream" of tomato soup, cole slaw, cauliflower pilaf and a wedge of fresh coconut

okay i haven't been able to login to this site for a while - don't know if it was my server, my modem or the website was bogged down.  at any rate, i have been compliant, but yesterday was a little slippery.  my daughter's 28th birthday.  i made a paleo cake and a traditional chocolate cake with chocolate fudge frosting.  i didn't even lick the spoon!  i have no idea how either tasted.  it was tempting, but i was strong.  it was the party that got a little off-track.  it was at 2 in the afternoon, so i'd had lunch already, but it was a small lunch.  i had some guacamole with homemade paleo crackers and pistachios and fruit, and i brought Thai Grapefruit Salad from WellFed2.  I think the paleo crackers are off limits because they are made with almond flour and "paleo-ified" and also because they fell into the snack category.  I noticed that I felt lousy afterwards.  It surprised me that I noticed feeling like crap, and definitely something to remember.

Day 8:

bfast:  2 cranberry sausage patties, roasted butternut squash, roasted asparagus

lunch: plaintain beef pie

*snack: paleo crackers, guacamole, thai grapefruit salad, fruit salad, pistachios

dinner: beef/pumpkin stew, roasted beets

Day 9:

bfast: cranberry sausage patty, 2 eggs, 1/2 cup sweet potato, 1 cup chopped veggies (asparagus, brussels sprouts, onion, jalapeno, red pepper)

lunch: chicken salad, cole slaw, larabar, fresh coconut wedge

dinner: plantain beef pie, blaukraut

I'm wiped out!  We skied for 4.5 hours today, and my eyes are dry and ready for bed.  We're going again tomorrow.  I figure it's good to have my big meals early in the day when I will be needing the fuel.  Not that my dinner was small tonight by any means, but well, hmm, what am I saying?  Ha - I need to go to bed!

Skied all day yesterday after dropping my car off for fuel filter, and picked it up after skiing.  It was so cold!!  I think it was probably in the single digits with a stiff wind.  We'd take 2-3 runs and go in to warm up.  I was really glad I bought the mittens on Sunday since my gloves absolutely do not keep my fingers warm.  Even with hand warmers inside.

Day 10 (Monday): bfast: cranberry sausage patty, 2 eggs, 1/2 cup sweet potato, 1 cup chopped veggies (asparagus, brussels sprouts, onion, jalapeno, red pepper)

lunch: tuna salad with homemade mayo, celery, carrots, capers and lemon juice, cucumber salad (well fed 2), cole slaw, larabar and coconut, black coffee (decaf)

dinner: beef/pumpkin stew, roasted cabbage

Day 11 (Tuesday) - had the baby today at 6:30, first day in a long time she was dropped off that early.  And again it was in the minus digits this morning.

bfast: chopped sweet potato, asparagus, onion, jalapeno with 2 eggs, and cranberry sausage, 2 cups black coffee with coconut oil

lunch: cream of tomato soup, blaukraut, 1-1/2 Applewood hot dogs, asian cucumber salad (well fed 2)

dinner: plantain beef pie, roasted cabbage & carrots - had a serious hunger attack and was not even halfway full after dinner, so I had a handful of macadamia nuts and small handful of cashews.  I probably ate more than I needed to in order to get enough fat.  Very poor "brakes..."  :(

Day 12 (Wednesday)

Went for a short jog this morning, but the sidewalks were slippery with about 1/2" of snow on top of the 2-3" of solid ice.  It was about 11 degrees, but it was sunny and not windy.  It's hard to find a longer route that I can do in the morning with these conditions.  Didn't feel very good after yesterday, but it was a hard day - getting up really early to babysit, then all my mealtimes were thrown off.  Ended up bringing my mom to the doctor then going grocery shopping.  Alessandra didn't take any naps from the time Danielle woke her up at 5:30 until we drove home around 2.  I thought I had enough for lunch, but I was starving around 3:30, so that ended up being my dinner.  I wasn't really hungry after that, but I did eat quite a few macadamias and cashews.  I had a tiny bowl of beef and pumpkin stew with a tiny plate of roasted cabbage around 7:30 so I could take my evening vitamins.  Feeling much better today, but I'm out of fresh coconut.  I'm not sure how to replace that amount of fat.  Going with black olives today.  Will stop at Asian market on my way home tomorrow, so I won't have coconut until tomorrow night.

bfast: 2 eggs on a bed of 1/2 cup diced sweet potato, 1/2 cup chopped asparagus, red pepper, onion, jalapeno and 1/2 cup of chopped spinach, with a small cranberry sausage.  2 cups of decaf with coconut oil.

lunch: beef and pumpkin stew, cauliflower pilaf, cucumber salad, 10 black olives

dinner: calves liver with onions, roasted asparagus, blaukraut

Day 13 (Thursday):

It's 4:00 and I'm hungry.  I have nothing to snack on in my office, but I do have a can of sardines and two cans of tuna in oil if I was THAT hungry.  Going home in 30 minutes, walk the dog, then make supper.  Ooooh, I don't have anything made up - or did I leave the beef/pumpkin stew in the fridge?  Don't remember.  I know I froze a bunch of things.  Have to make up some things tonight.

bfast: cranberry sausage patty, 2 eggs, 1/2 cup diced sweet potato, 1/2 cup asparagus, red pepper, onion, jalapeno and 1/2 cup chopped spinach.  2 cups decaf with coconut oil.

post-36149-0-94182300-1394141160_thumb.j

lunch: chicken salad, tossed salad with 1/2 avocado, 2 fingerling baked sweet potatoes, wedge of coconut

dinner: 4 oz beef burger with chipotle seasoning and chopped jalapenos, sweet potato fries, steamed broccoli, roasted cabbage, small wedge of coconut

Day 14 (Friday)

So glad it's Friday!  I have a busy weekend coming up - I'm sure I won't feel rested and ready for work on Monday.  But maybe I shouldn't be so quick to decide how I'm going to feel in 3 more days ha. I must do something about my bed this weekend.  Either swap the mattress for the futon mattress and see if I still get back pain, or have my sons help me bring up my waterbed parts from the basement and get it set up and warming up.  Really don't want to spend $600-700 on a new mattress... especially when I never had problems on the waterbed.  We'll see.  Here's my task list for the weekend:  Run 5 miles, make hand lotion, cook-up for the coming week and deliver some to my mom, deal with mattress/poster bed issue, ski Sunday.  And of course the usual, walking the dog twice a day, taking care of the chickens, doing laundry.  Maybe even make zucchini muffins for Alessandra on Tuesday.

bfast:  2 eggs, cranberry sausage patty, 1/2 cup spinach, 1/2 cup asparagus, red pepper, jalapeno & onion, 1/3 cup sweet potato and 1/4 avocado.  2 cups decaf with coconut oil.  (i think it's time to change it up for bfast)

lunch:  1/2 large chicken breast with spicy rub, steamed broccoli, roasted cabbage, 1/4 avocado, 2" wedge fresh coconut

Day 17 (Monday)

I can't believe I missed Saturday.  But I did spend about 8 hours cooking-up food for the week.  Actually cooking food for me and my mom :) because she loves "my food" so much.  I had a few not great moments, but I didn't have anything off-plan.  It's more that I have been known to regularly stand and eat my lunch and/or supper in the kitchen, whilst doing other things.  I'm fine sitting down for breakfast without interruptions; well, without electronics or reading.  But I still eat fast, and I still get up to feed the dog and cat halfway through (because pack leaders eat first).  I don't want to make her wait until I'm finished eating, because that's a long time from when  I get up, set up pet food, start my breakfast, take dog for 45 minute walk, get home, finish making my breakfast, sit down and eat.  If I get out of bed at 6:30, it's about 20-30 minutes before we get out the door for our walk, so about 7:45 when  I sit down to eat.

Sunday:

bfast - 2 eggs over easy with sausage, stir-fried veggies and sweet potato, 1/4 avocado

lunch - very late!!  went skiing with kyle, and we were about to head into lodge for lunch around 2;15, when he crashed.  So we spent awhile in the ski patrol office, then drove up to the ER where we waited at least 90 minutes before he was seen.  I managed to eat my chicken salad then, so it was around 4.  We were in the ER until after 7, got home after 8, didn't even walk the dog, just set up her dinner and mine and ate late

dinner - sweet potato shepherds pie, blaukraut, broccoli rabe with garlic, pistachios and raisins

Monday:

bfast: 2 eggs, 1 sausage patty on sweet potato and veggies

lunch: sausage/kale saute, roasted cabbage, cocoa toasted cauliflower

dinner:

Layla is going to her 4th dog social tonight at 7, so I won't have much time this evening.  I might leave work early to go and check on Kyle and see how he's doing.  Grade 3 shoulder separation is ER diagnosis, needs ortho consult and p/t.  Thank goodness he's taking Vicodin for pain, he was really hurting yesterday.  Even though he's 25, you never stop being a mom  and all the worry that goes with it

Today is Thursday the 13th, and I have been off the grid!  Haven't been on my computer much (at home), and haven't updated my W30.  Tuesday was rough - not sure why.  I had the baby, but I've done fine all day when I've had her before.  I had already prepared lots of food for the week, although I was starting to get low on some things.  Alessandra wasn't feeling good, so she really didn't eat anything.  I tried offering her some of my stuff, but she just kept saying "no" in her cute little 18-month old voice <3  So Tuesday I got into the nuts a little, and the almond butter.  Thank goodness I don't keep whole jars of this stuff around anymore, just small containers to use in my food prep.  Yesterday the blizzard hit us up with 20" of snow and bitter cold temps.  I was worried about the chickens all evening, because their light burned out, and I'm not going to put a regular light bulb in the coop since I worry that if it "explodes" it would send glass shards everywhere.  Couldn't go out last night b/c of snow... so this morning we had a 4 hour delay at work, thankfully.  Stopped at grocery store and hardware store on the way to work.  Chickens will have some warmth tonight :)

I'm going to try and recall what I've had since Tuesday:

Day 18 (Tue)

bfast - "the usual"

lunch - moroccan apricot meatballs, don't remember, but a bunch of cashews, macadamias and some almond butter

dinner - all i remember is broccoli, because Alessandra finally wanted to eat something - what a surprise that she wanted broccoli!

Day 19 (Wed)

bfast:  the usual

lunch: beef and pumpkin stew, broccoli rabe w/raisins & almonds, blaukraut, don't remember the other thing, coconut wedge, 1/4 avocado

dinner: beef and pumpkin stew, orange glazed brussels sprouts, spaghetti squash with almonds

Day 20 (Thu)

bfast: the usual

lunch: 1 baked salmon cake (wellfed 2) with sriracha sause (W30 recipe on nomnompaleo), chicken curry, spaghetti squash, kale with coconut milk

dinner: chicken breast with spicy rub, 1/2 sweet potato baked fries, 6 spears asparagus, 6 oz "cream" of celeriac soup (coconut cream - yummmy!), 10 macadamia nuts

This morning I got on the scale to see if I have in fact been eating more than I need to, and I was shocked that I have lost 5 pounds (scale read 122 after breakfast!).  I don't have any extra poundage to lose!!!  I think I need to eat more fat.  I haven't even been running due to the ridiculous weather.  And I've been skiing, but I don't think it's using as many calories as running.

Tonight I made Mexican Crockpot Beef Stew and Citrus Pork Carnitas.  Skiing tomorrow - already made up loaded chicken salad, carrot and celery sticks and a larabar.  The last 3 coconuts I've bought have been bad - I need to see if i have olives.  I added a 1/4 avocado to the chicken salad and will have 1/4 with b'fast tomorrow.

*update:  Thanks for your reply Chris - when I'm not on the W30, I only get on my scale about once every 2-3 months.  I really don't care much about my weight because it isn't a problem. However my clothes have been feeling really baggy on me, and yet I feel like I'm eating a ton of food, so it was more of a reality check, and I was really surprised at the number.  I will move the scale somewhere inconvenient so I won't be tempted to check again ;)

Good job on remembering your food log for several days.

A bit of tough love: please please please hide the scale for the rest of your Whole30.  :)

If you don't want to lose any more weight (I agree on adding some fat), here is an article with some tips: http://whole9life.com/2013/12/keeping-weight-whole30/

Thanks for the link to that article - definitely using some of the suggestions for keeping weight on!  And last night I moved my scale to the spare bedroom (currently closed off) and it's not on the floor, but placed in a difficult to reach location.  No "accidently" jumping on the scale hehe.

Oh what a wonderful day!  Powder skiing!  My legs are like toast and rubber at the same time.

Day 21 (Fri)

b'fast- the usual

lunch- chicken salad made with 1 whole baked chicken breast, 2 Tbs homemade mayo, 6 slices of jalapeno, 1/2 chopped carrot, 1/2 chopped celery, 1 Tbs chopped cilantro and 1/4 avocado; carrot and celery sticks; cashew larabar; handful of macadamias/cashews/almonds

dinner- hefty bowl of mexican crockpot beef stew, 1/4 sweet potato baked fries, 1/2 rutabaga baked wedges, 8 spears of asparagus all roasted in coconut oil

Day 22 (Sat)

Got up to 40 degree temps, walked the dog in the slush (since we got almost 2 feet of snow on Wednesday night).  Tonight it's supposed to go back to the teens, and we'll even get some below-zero temps this coming week.  Ugh.  I really want to run outside!  I'm [supposed to be] training for a leg of the marathon 10 weeks away.  I planned my training schedule to being at 20 weeks and train for a half-marathon, but once we got buried in over 4" of ice and had bitter cold temps, my training stalled.  I tried running on the treadmill, but my p/t said it was causing tendon problems in my hips because my gait is so different.

Had my granddaughter today from 7:30-4.  She's adorable, but definitely a lot of work.  She doesn't like to take naps (just like her mother), I'm lucky if she takes one 1-hr nap in that time.

Bfast:  the usual

Lunch:  3 salmon cakes (wellfed 2) with sriracha sauce (nomnompaleo W30-version), 1 cup "cream" of celeriac soup

Dinner: pork carnitas (omg so delicious), spicy spaghetti squash, sweet and sour kale, couple spoonfuls of coconut manna (i can't find any fresh coconut around!  all of the last 4 coconuts I've bought have been bad.  I'm starting to get desperate!)

Didn't get myself in bed early enough last night and ended up with only 7.5 hours of sleep.  Have discovered that I feel really good when I get 8.5 or 8.75.  And since I'm not a morning person by nature, but have to be up for chickens, dog, cat and work, that means I need to force myself to get to bed at or before 10.  That is my biggest challenge.  I tend to feel very awake and have plenty of energy at night - my cortisol levels are still high.  I take 1mg of melatonin around 8 pm in order to "Phase Advance" my melatonin cycle, and it helps, but I still gotta get my butt in bed.

Haven't been feeling great this weekend - stomach ache (and I NEVER get stomach aches) and headache.  No energy.  Feeling just plain old yucky.  I know Alessandra was sick for a while and went a few days without eating, just wanting a bottle of milk.  I wonder if I got it from her.

Day 23 (Sunday)

b'fast - the usual

lunch - met Amy at the Scuffer to use our living social deal before it expires.  had a burger topped with fresh jalapenos, side salad with oil and vinegar and sweet potato fries (fried in canola oil - not great, but acceptable)

dinner - sauerkraut, mexican beef stew, sweet and sour kale, 8 pineapple chunks

Didn't sleep well at all last night.  Tossed and turned with a very unhappy stomach, and a headache that bothered me even in my sleep.  Walked the dog this morning and it was -10 degrees without a wind chill factor.  I'm really sick of the minus temperatures.  Really didn't feel like eating, in fact there were a few moments where I wondered if it would stay down.  Came in to work, but may not stay long.

Day 24 (Monday)

b'fast - the usual (2 cups of green tea, cranberry sausage patty, 1 cup chopped veggies stir-fried with 1/2 cup chopped sweet potato and 2 eggs over easy, 1/4 avocado with turmeric, black pepper and cayenne), got to work and had 2 cups of decaf with coconut oil.  feel lousy.  brought turkey soup for lunch along with broccoli, white grapefruit and a wedge of coconut.  I finally scored a sweet delicious ripe coconut yesterday!  The last 4 coconuts I've bought have been bad; can usually tell right off from the color, smell and definitely the taste of the water - crack it open and the surface of the meat has become moldy between the flesh and the shell.  So disappointing.

Okay so the stomach flu hit me hard.  Came home from work at 12:30.  Had some turkey soup and then took a 2.5 hour nap on the couch.  Struggled to walk the dog.  Have a fever.  It's now 9:45 pm and my stomach is grumbling, but I think it's the pain of the stomach flu.  I have a killer headache.  Have been drinking lots of peppermint tea and water.  Time to go to bed.  I feel like crap.  How have other people limped through illness while on the  W30?  I sure hope this passes soon.

Home again today with stomach flu.  Temp got up to 100 yesterday - couldn't eat anything for supper.  Slept pretty well last night, unlike Sunday night.  Walked the dog (short walk) and it's still only 5 degrees outside.  Got home and thought I'd make something for breakfast - scrambled up 3 eggs with turmeric, pepper, a little salt and cayenne cooked in coconut oil.  It tasted great in my mouth, and at first it felt good going down.  Then the stabbing pains.  I don't think I'm going to vomit, but it sure hurts to eat.  I was also craving a glass of fresh squeezed orange juice - that was delicious, but again, my stomach was not happy.  Had a cup of peppermint tea, and now I'm lying on the couch.  I sure hope this passes by the end of the day.  I am so weak.  After juicing the orange I was ready for a nap!  It took all my energy just to do that.  Pathetic.  The headache is miserable, almost like a migraine, and has lasted about as long as an untreated migraine.  Body aches are pretty intense too.  So this is Day 25.  I'd like to end on a positive note, so I'm hoping this passes soon, and I can begin eating again.

My poor stomach does not like having food in it.  I had a half bowl of turkey soup for lunch.  It stayed down, but my stomach felt lousy.  Late dinner of half bowl of turkey soup and some warm applesauce.  I felt fine for about 3 minutes, then I felt bloated and crampy and gross again.  I wonder if this will be gone tomorrow.  I'm kind of afraid to eat normally.  My belly is still really distended and is making all kinds of noise.  It's happier when it's empty.  Drank a lot of water today, and peppermint tea.  I'm planning to keep it simple for tomorrow.  Perhaps another 3 scrambled eggs and some applesauce.  Have to think about lunch, since I'm expecting to go to work.  Wish I had some mashed something or other.  Maybe I could whip up a batch of carrot/parsnip/cauliflower puree, and keep it on the bland side.  That and some bone broth that I cooked today.  Tried to filter out all the bones and meat, and gave up - too tired!  I'll have to deal with that another time.  Bone broth should be good.  I think it's very hearty (lots of bones and not a lot of water).  I could probably stretch it out by adding some more water.

Day 26 (Wed)

I still have stomach pain and migraine-like headache.  Home from work.  Going to dr. at 3:30 today.  Cancelled appointment with Christine, but I'm still bringing Gabi to the vet at 2:30.  The nurse at WFH said it didn't sound like the normal course of the stomach bug.  Great.  What the heck is it?  Still no appetite, although I did eat 3 scrambled eggs with turmeric, pepper and cayenne, and 2 cups of green tea.  Didn't feel worse after eating, but don't feel any better either.  Bah.  I'm not a good patient - hate being sick.  I'm grateful this doesn't happen very often.  I'm glad I cooked up some bone broth yesterday, although I might need to add more water since it's very hearty.  I can throw in some chopped carrots and celery too - maybe...  The applesauce I ate yesterday tasted and felt great going down, then my stomach felt like a brick again.  I did not sign up for this :( Also I still have overall fatigue and weakness.  At least I slept well.  Perhaps I'll take a shower and a nap.  Or reverse order - nap and shower.

Lunch: 1/2 bowl chicken soup - and then a stomach ache

3:30 went to Dr - aggravated stomach flu.  If it's not better by Friday, they want to do an endoscope to see if there's a hole in my stomach.  I am 99% sure it is just the flu.  Fever is gone.  Energy slightly improved.  Headache slightly improved.  Still have massive stomach pain, but I learned that it is a huge gas pocket through my upper and lower bowel.  It does not feel like gas - it's not moving!  Just staying put and distending outward right under my sternum.  Hurts to touch my stomach.  Nurse said "you've lost weight" - well, I guess that will happen when you don't/can't eat.

Dinner:  1/2 bowl chicken soup, 1/2 cup applesauce.  Not toooo bad, not great either.  Peppermint tea.  Planning on going to work tomorrow.  And hopefully able to eat a little more than today.

Day 27 (Thurs)

So it looks like I'm down to very simple, small meals for now.  And I remembered why my doctor wants to do an endoscopy on Friday if I'm not feeling better - hole in stomach due to long-term NSAID use.  Guilty.  I think I've been using NSAIDs for <gasp> more than a decade.  I was able to give up the Tramadol for chronic low back pain, but I have a love-dependency issue with NSAIDs.  I'm currently taking Diclofenac, which my p/t said is gentler on my cartilage, but I still haven't addressed the chronic inflammation pain that I have.  I know the W30 has helped a lot, but hasn't eliminated my pain :(   If I eat more than 2 bites or 2 sips of water, my stomach is full and distended and painful.  And I have no appetite - me, who usually eats more quantity of food than anyone I know to an almost embarrasing degree - have not been hungry for almost a week.  I'm eating because I know I need to.  But most food makes me nauseous, and a few sips of water is all I can handle at one time.  I'm hypervigilant about staying hydrated - do not want to get dehydrated.  There is no way I can exercise feeling like this - it wipes me out to walk the dog.  I came up the flight of stairs for work today, and had to sit down for a couple minutes.  I really, really hope this is just a bad case of the stomach flu

bfast-3 scrambled eggs with turmeric, pepper, cayenne and a little salt, 1/2 cup applesauce with cinnamon

lunch-homemade chicken soup with carrots and celery (about 16 oz) and 1/2 cup applesauce

dinner- *i actually felt a little hungry this evening!  hooray!  hopefully that means I am getting better :)  I had a small bowl of gingered carrot and parsnip soup, a small bowl of chicken soup, and two 1/2 cup bowls of applesauce with cinnamon.  Then I was very full, and had a few twinges of stomach ache / food in my stomach, but I think it's improving.  Cautiously optimistic here :)

I forgot to mention that I started taking Pepto Bismol tablets yesterday on the doctors suggestion.  I won't take the liquid (GROSS), but being in such pain, I figured I'd give it a try.  Today marks a week since this started, and quite honestly I got a little scared about a possible hole in my stomach.  So maybe that has helped with the gas pockets stuck in my ascending, transverse and descending colon that seem to be stuck.  And I am pretty sure I didn't poo yesterday, most likely because I'm just not eating enough food, but I had a tiny one today.  Please, please let this trend continue, and I can look back and say what an awful bout of stomach bug I had.   fingers crossed

Day 28 (Friday)

Finally coming out of stomach bug purgatory.  This morning was feeling a teensy bit hungry, so I added 2 slices of sweet potato (diced) and 1/2 cup of chopped broccoli florets to my 3 scrambled eggs.  So far so good.  Also had 1/2 cup of applesauce with cinnamon.  Haven't had coffee (decaf) since Monday.  It's okay.  I can't imagine adding that yet.  Same with my daily seltzer with lunch.  I can wait.  I have had a return of my chronic low back pain - it must be from stopping the NSAIDs.  I need to find an alternative, since now I'm afraid to take them again (risk of gastrointestinal bleeding).  Even my hands and finger joints are feeling painful.  I think it's safe to say the headache I've had is 95% gone (there is still a shadow of a headache).  And my energy seems a bit improved.  Not sure I'll be up for skiing on Sunday, but I'll wait and see.

bfast - 3 scrambled eggs with 1/2 cup broc florets and 1/2 cup diced sweet potato

lunch - chicken soup, 1/2 baked sweet potato, 1/2 cup applesauce

mid-aft snack - okay, it's 3:15 and I'm HUNGRY!  Hungry enough to rip into the can of sardines in my drawer.  And I'm going to steam the broccoli I brought for lunch, but was too full at the time.  Hooray, this MUST mean I'm almost better!

dinner - Fish en papillote w/Citrus, Ginger and Shiitake (nomnompaleo), Sweet & Sour Kale, white grapefruit
