Day 12 feeling great and omg what's in my supplement?

Hi, I'm on day 12 of the whole 30 and feeling awesome following to a T. I just finished the book yesterday though as I started the plan before reading and read the supplement chapter. I thought I was all awesomes taking mine but I'm stopping them all for now. They contain soy (guessing minimal amounts) and what? Sucralose? If I've had some soy in my fish oil capsule, does that mean I have to start the whole 30 again? That seems ridiculous for a multivitiamin and something I knew nothing of. Anyhow, but really why sucralose (splenda, fake sugar?) in a multivitamin. What's the point. I discovered it in my toothpaste the other day too and switched to Tom's Maine. I quit sucralose and all fake sugars about 8 weeks ago but didn't realize it was too in products like toothpaste and vitamins, was thinking only food and drink and such. Wow, I just can't believe how low manufacturers have gone to make something taste good. Gross! I highly doubt with whole 30 I'll need a multivitamin anyways. I was taking D-3, B complex, fish oil and a multivitamin and 25 mg of acidophillus. Now that i'm feeling great, probably a good idea to see if I don't need the multivitamins and go from there?

I quit taking a multivitamin after going Whole30-style. I do continue to take D-3 and a B-Complex.

The trace of soy may have negatively influenced your Whole30. Rather that starting over, I would recommend just delaying the reintroduction of any soy until day 42. Basically, save soy for the last thing you introduce so that your system has time to accumulate a lot of days before you test it.

I discovered the same thing about my fish oil AFTER my first Whole30 was done!  I already knew I was sensitive to soy, so I never bothered with a reintroduction of it anyway.  Even with my soy sensitivity, the tiny amount in the capsules apparently wasn't an issue.  I switched to something else and I never noticed any changes/differences.  Of course, now that I know I look out for it.  It is also often found in D3 gel caps too, so read carefully.  I think it's in the coating that supposedly makes them easier to digest...funny, right?

There are fish oil capsules that don't contain it.  Spectrum makes one (it's what I now use).

I am feeling a bit overwhelmed....AND I haven't even started yet! I take a multi, fish oil,and b-complex etc.. most all of my stuff is from New Chapter and Garden of Life and loaded with Soy. Non-GMO, organic, fermented or otherwise...it is still soy.

I am starting the whole 30 on Monday March 10th. Should I just not take them, or finish them out and look for approved? New Chapter and GOL are darn expensive...I hate to waste the money ( especially since my better half is currently laid-off). I was actually thinking of not taking any supplements anyway during the whole 30.... But when i am finished, should I try adding them back...or just ditch them and buy new?

Suggestions?

Jen

I'm on day six and just discovered my supplements included soy, UGH.  You work through the cravings, headaches and everything else that comes with it (speaking of the bad) to follow the regiment to a T only to find out your supplements were stabbing you in the back.  Never bringing soy back into my diet but happy to read the moderator's comment.  Thanks for posting your experience.  Wish I had seen it before.

Day 9 presented some challenges... I was out doing my shopping when I felt like I wanted to pass out! I was getting a cold sweat. I thought the store I was in was warm and stuffy but it wasn't. I picked up some carrot juice and continued my shopping and started to feel a bit better. I checked my blood sugar when I got home and it was 200. Checked again an hour later and it was 125 which is great for me. I had a spinach salad for lunch and took a 2 hr nap. Felt a little bit better but still weak. I woke up at midnight with a terrible head ache.

I was a diet coke junky before going on Whole30. I have been craving it so I thought but what I really think is it has become such a habit for me. I really miss the fizz so I had some sparking water with dinner which was so delightful!

Has anyone else had this happen to them? I will spend day 10 preparing food for the week and reading more of ISWF.

Determined to stay on track!

Janet

I am glad to come across this. I take 9 fish oil pills a day prescribed by a lipid specialist at u of m for my insane high triglycerides. Even with strict diet they are like 300. Diet unchecked they've been near 1300's resulting in pancreantitis. I'm hoping this whole 30 had a positive effect on my lipid panel, although the fish oil is something I need to take to help keep levels low. I'm tying up day 3 and found my fish oil also contains soy. I'm torn on what to do. I think I may stop taking them and then reintroduce soy last. Hopefully by then I'll have seen positive results from diet alone. Although, testing and trial and error with diet had proven for me a pretty strong genetic component. I could not take medication for levels during pregnancy and so I ate super clean and still had levels up near 500's. But then I didn't cut out grains or dairy. Let's hope for the best!!!

I also have a supplement-related question - wondering if I should restart.

As I've discussed in a different thread, I've been suffering from severe constipation.

Right now I'm on my way out the door to find a compliant magnesium supplement, and I'm hoping that will help.

However, last night, in a moment of real discomfort and anxiety, I went ahead and took 10g of a non-compliant supplement that I already had in the house. (I am in desperate need of the kind of swift relief that this supplement has afforded me in the past.)

The supplement contains stevia, fructooligosacchariades, and lo han. (All bad stuff, I know. It was a desperate measure.)

In other places in the Whole 30 literature, I've seen language to the effect of "you're an adult, decide for yourself if you need to restart". Because it's a sweetener issue, and I probably only ingested a fairly small amount, I feel like this falls into this category. I'm inclined to believe that I have not screwed up my Whole 30.

That said, I thought I'd see if anyone has information that will change my mind.

(The worst part is that I took the supplement because in the past it has effected immediate relief - no relief this time. Ick!)

Off to the supplement store I go!

Thanks for reading!

Thanks for the article! I went to my parents' place for dinner yesterday and had one piece of shrimp (no sauce). It tasted awfully sweet so I went to rummage through the recycling to see what the ingredients were but couldn't find it. It's one of those frozen packages so don't think there is added sugar but it made me wonder if the companies fatten up the shrimp and add extra taste by soaking them in sweetened water... This made me think about whether I inadvertently consumed sugar but now that I read the article, I feel better that I don't have to restart.  :D

Day 9 is here to stay!!
