Communion bread and wine?

I'm Catholic -  so not sure how it works in other traditions - but I was taught that communion could be received by either wafer or wine or both. If I was doing a Whole30 and attending mass, I would personally opt to receive communion by wine rather then wafer because, for me, gluten (even in tiny amounts) can trigger intense cravings for more gluten.

Melissa posted this on the Whole30 Facebook page last week in response to a similar question:

"God (or other personal religious traditions) > Whole30. Do whatever you feel comfortable with. There's a chance that the gluten in the bread will make a difference in your results, but for folks who believe strongly in their practices it's a chance worth taking "

Most churches these days provide a GF option for communion - rice cakes, GF crackers or bread, or something.  If yours doesn't, I don't know why they wouldn't if asked, knowing it is excluding people from partaking of communion.  Our church provides plain rice cakes.
