Tari's First W30!

Hey all!

Took the plunge and started my first Whole30 yesterday. Mid last year I made the shift to Primal eating and felt great for it. However, I've been unwell since before Christmas and as a result 'fell off the wagon' and never really got back on. I'm doing the Whole30 to give my body a bit of a 'reset'. I'm hoping to improve my overall health, reduce my chronic pain from endometriosis, and take control of weight-gain and increased appetite caused by one of the medications I'm taking.

Right now I'm a day and a half in and I am actually really enjoying it. I've had some really delicious meals and the constant hunger I was having before is not nearly as bad as it has been (been having lots of big glasses of water between meals, which seems to help).

I was supposed to post my first entry last night but the website was down, so here it is now!

Meal 1:

Eggs w/ vegetables sautéed in tomato paste

post-41371-0-40677800-1393754214_thumb.j

Meal 2:

Pumpkin, cashew and ginger soup

Chicken Waldorf salad

post-41371-0-84612800-1393754216_thumb.j

Meal 3:

Taco Sliders (from Paleo Happy Hour)

post-41371-0-54018400-1393754218_thumb.j

Now it's time to do a cookup of all my protein for the week. I'll post up Day 2 later this evening after I've had dinner. ^_^

Protein cook up complete, which should make life easier this week, and have some leftovers of the Chilli to put in the freezer. Time to relax now and play some board games with the husband!   :D

Thanks, Chocoholic! I've been taking pictures because it's easier than writing it down straight away, so I figured I may as well post them.

Day 3 down. Not a great day but only because I have a rather nasty earache. Thankfully, I had just about all my food already prepared already (only had to make the salad), so I had more time to spend on sulking and feeling sorry for myself. :P

Meal 1:

Cauliflower Rice Pilaf (from Well Fed)

Boiled eggs

post-41371-0-80970000-1393928011_thumb.j

Meal 2:

Pumpkin, cashew, ginger soup

Waldorf salad w/ baby spinach and seasoned ground beef

post-41371-0-85210600-1393928015_thumb.j

Meal 3:

Chicken goulash w/ steamed greens

post-41371-0-02750700-1393928019_thumb.j

My Thermomix has been my best friend on the journey thus far. Everything I had today, except for the ground beef, was made/cooked in it it. While the salads might night be the most presentable, it takes less than a minute to chop them up, which is a win for me. Plus soups are dead easy to make and good for an extra helping of veges, and it cooks my boiled eggs perfectly. My husband was reluctant to let me buy it, but I think he's glad he did because I use at least 1-2 times a day, and it really does make eating healthy super easy. ^_^

Day 4 was a tough one. Firstly, I had to travel into the city for doctor's appoint right when I usually have lunch, so I deliberately decided to break my first two meals into three smaller ones. Secondly, I received some less than awesome news at said appointment, which would usually send me faceplanting myself into the nearest cake. Didn't help that I had to walk past many wonderful looking cafes and food places on the way back to the station, but I was very good and resisted going in and feeding my feelings.

Meal 1:
Pork loin w/ caramelised onions and apples
Sweet potato w/ pumpkin pie spice

Meal 2:
Pumpkin, cashew & ginger soup
Boiled egg
Macadamias
Strawberries

post-41371-0-44518300-1393927911_thumb.j

Meal 3:
Chicken Waldorf salad

post-41371-0-20855800-1393927912_thumb.j

Meal 4:
Salmon w/ steamed veges and lemon & rosemary sweet potato

(I was so looking forward to this one that I accidentally ate most of my steamed veggies and some of my fish before I took my usual photo, oops!)

post-41371-0-84824800-1393927915_thumb.j

Ran out of my pumpkin soup today, so I will have to think of something tasty to make for the next few days of lunches. Perhaps cauliflower and leek... yum!

Day 5, done! Today was a bit easier - a little more energy and not feeling so shit about what happened yesterday. Managed to make some tasty things in my Thermomix, which always cheers me up. Changed my mind on what soup to make and glad I did because the carrot soup was soooo good.

Meal 1:
Cauliflower Rice Pilaf w/ seasoned ground beef

post-41371-0-88875900-1394010240_thumb.j

Meal 2:
Carrot and cumin soup
Beetroot, carrot and apple salad w/ baby spinach and shredded chicken
post-41371-0-67181300-1394010242_thumb.j

Meal 3:
Special pork stew w/ spaghetti squash

post-41371-0-55120900-1394010244_thumb.j

Noticed a few changes in my body, both good and bad. Besides the more energy, I find I'm waking up more easily in the mornings and I'm not feeling so lethargic all day. My husband has also commented that I'm looking a little slimmer, which is always nice to hear. On the downside my skin has broken out quite badly, but I know it will pass.

Now it's time to go get my head stuck in the books. I enrolled to start studying Psychology this year and it's the first week of the semester. I'm really excited to be studying again as I have been feeling rather stagnant in my current job. It's good to be making over both my mind and my body. ^_^

Nice easy one for Day 6. Took it easy during the day, went for a nice gentle walk with husband and the doggies in the afternoon, and made some garlic soup after dinner. Feeling a little sleepy now, so might be a early night for me tonight.

Meal 1:

Chicken pho with zoodles
Handful of macadamias
post-41371-0-70504500-1394100122_thumb.j

Meal 2:
Carrot and cumin soup
Waldorf salad w/ seasoned ground beef
post-41371-0-32983800-1394100125_thumb.j

Meal 3:
Grass-fed steak
Beetroot, carrot and apple salad w/ baby spinach
Half an avocado
post-41371-0-08561900-1394100127_thumb.j

Have a feeling I may be a little addicted to Waldorf salad, but when I have it with a bit of meat and a serving of soup, it makes for a nice, well-rounded meal. Nearly out of mayo (I make my own mayo, so no added nasties!) so might have to come up with something different to have until I can be bothered to make more. ;)

Hiya this will be my second whole 30.  (Day 2 of 30)  You have some great meal ideas there.  Sorry you had a rubbish dr's appt but hope everything is ok.  I wasn't as good and have been overindulging in rubbishy sweet stuff whilst trying to get Dr's to sort me out, so well done for sticking with it.  Do share the willpower ;)

Keep up the good work x

Thanks, guys! @Talie, I can relate. I've been back and forth between specialists for a while, and got myself into a rather unhealthy habit of feeding my feelings. I think making the commitment to change was half the battle won. My goal is to get through this with confidence and determination, even if I have to fake it sometimes. Sending lots of good luck and willpower your way and hope you get doctor-y stuff sorted out soon. :)

@firesprite Here are a few of my favourite foods so far

Chocolate chilli (seriously amazing): http://www.theclothesmakethegirl.com/2009/02/22/my-favorite-chili-recipe/
Waldorf salad: http://paleoleap.com/waldorf-salad/

Cauliflower rice pilaf: http://www.theclothesmakethegirl.com/2013/03/30/cauliflower-rice-pilaf/

Beetroot, carrot and apple salad: Grate 2 beetroot, 1 a carrot and half an apple, mix with 2 tsp olive oil. 2 tsp apple cider vinegar or lemon juce. and salt to taste (2 servings)

Taco sliders: 500g beef mince hand-mixed with:
1 tsp cumin
1/2 tsp garlic powder
1/4 tsp onion powder
1/2 tsp cayenne pepper
1/4 tsp of paprika.
Add a little chilli powder if you like it hot, but too much will overpower the other flavours

Form into patties and cook in frying pan or on BBQ. I serve mine on some lettuce, topped with mashed avocado, and diced tomato and red onion.

Soups I'd have to try and dig up the recipes for, but here's a few for you to browse anyway. :)

Omg, I made through to Day 7! Long way to go yet, but I feel like I've been making some good progress so far. I'm starting to get energy back, I'm in less pain and I don't feel hungry all the time. Big yays all 'round!

This morning's meal was a bit of a 'WTF can I eat that requires little effort on my behalf' and as a result was a bit of a mish-mash of things. It was ok, but not something I'd be in a hurry to eat again. Might need to do a mid-week cook up next week to make sure I don't run out of food again.

Meal 1:
Spaghetti squash sautéed in tomato paste
Spiced broccoli
Macadamias
Seasoned ground-beef

post-41371-0-24164000-1394187200_thumb.j

Meal 2:
Garlic and silverbeet soup
'Greek' salad (minus the feta) w/ boiled eggs

post-41371-0-36681900-1394187210_thumb.j

Meal 3:
Burgers w/ salad, plus homemade mayo and ketchup

post-41371-0-76944600-1394187225_thumb.j

BTW, the burgers were *amazing*. Seriously, I want to have those burgers babies. Recipe came from Well Fed 2, along with the recipes for the mayo and ketchup. Probably my favourite meal so far, though I might have to abstain from them for a while lest I get addicted. XD

Thanks MissTariPie.  I've had a virus that hit my chest, like you it hit in before christmas but wouldnt shift.  I have quite bad asthma and what with the wet weather, cold and the virus it was a struggle and chocolate makes everything better right???? ;)  Other than several lots of steroids, which give you the munchies I've ended up having to just wait it out.  It finally seems to be going (touch wood!!) and I'm about 95%

Definately feeling more positive and committed to this Whole 30+.  Will have a go at making Taco sliders, they sound lush :)

Keep at it you are doing great :D
