Derval
I am just trying to subtlely change things bit by bit....so not buying bread, biscuits (cookies) etc. Today I bought some (milder) dark chocolate if they are looking for a "treat". And largely paleo main meals. Brekfast they have been having rice crispies, but I would like to see that change.... My son (9) is v.interested in healthy eating so likes the challenge. I've had no big objections so far, it's just extra work for me! I'm not pushing the dairy issue at all though, esp as I have re-introduced it myself! They don't drink any juice or squash so it's milk or water, and they ususally go for milk. p.s Great results, well done.
jhmomi
Bread will be a tough one for us. We don't have it daily but to never have a sandwich would be a challenge right now. All grain consumption is down considerably and I hope to make us gluten free except for bread when we do have grains. By the end of the year is sort of my goal. And by we I mean the family, not me! Once I get most of the house gluten free, then I will try the gluten free bread to take the next step. Slow and steady progress will get us there. jhmomi
Two birthdays in our house this week, daughter and hubby. Bought both cakes at Whole Foods. No artificial colors, flavors, sweeteners, preservatives, or trans fats. And my daughter's 1/4 sheet cake cost the same as the processed, artificial one I bought at Publix last year! Aberrantatavia
Great results! And congrats on moving your family toward healthier choices. Think about how much better your little people's brains will function on less crap! Enjoy the birthdays:)
jhmomi
Saturday, September 1 My hubby's birthday was August 30th and my daughter's today. Busy week! I am on Day 33 of my Whole45 and things are great. I was down 4 lbs on Day 31 and again today, but plan to put the scale away again for a couple of weeks. Probably need to limit the scale to no more than once a month and also wait until a week after my period ends for the weigh-in to get a number less affected by hormonal variations. My meals have been grab and go lately, but compliant and satisfying. I took a Primal Pac and an apple to my daughter's birthday party at Monkey Joes. I'll get back to updating my log with my meals because I find it helpful for me, but I certainly won't try to catch up what I have missed through today. I will say my new favorite snack is hot guacamole (bought at Whole Foods because I was lazy and it looked good) with fresh snow peas. Nice little bite from the jalapenos and a very satisfying crunch and sweetness with the snow peas. I was bummed TJ's was out of snow peas when i went this morning. Had a good workout yesterday. Squats 125 lbs again and deadlifts 115 lbs. My trainer was thrilled with my form on the deadlifts so we will probably go back up on the weights with those. I tried 135 recently but my form suffered since we jumped up significantly from the prior weight I had done. I benched 75 lbs again for a few sets but did a final set of 5 reps with 80 lbs and it felt good. I am loving the energy and increased strength I have with my improved dietary choices. Positive results are a great motivation to continue this program indefinitely. Hope everyone has a great holiday weekend!

Aberrantatavia
I plan to leave the scales to a once in awhile thing as well. I don't even ant to get on them next week at this point. Lol maybe I won't:) I love guac and snow peas or snap peas too! Haven't gotten the ones from trader joes, but I don't like the ones from Sam's for some reason. I make guac and I tend to make it a little kicked up, it's such good stuff! I'll eat it on everything! As a matter of fact, I'm out and I need to make more... jhmomi
Monday, September 3 Day 35 of my Whole45. Busy weekend so far. Getting ready to go for a run, but don't really feel like it. Ready for routines again tomorrow. Two family birthdays, a baby shower plus long Holiday weekend = not so great food choices. A lot of grab and go stuff, all Whole30 compliant, but have not been following the meal template at all. Just too much snacking on Paleo stuff. Too much fruit, dried fruit and nuts. Not enough meat. Just don't feel as good as I did last week. Hormones not helping right now either. Back to logging food tomorrow. Keeps me accountable and makes me eat real meals. A win-win for me! jhmomi
Woo hoo. May not have felt like going, but it felt good once I started running. I ran five miles with a pace of about 9:20. Now I need breakfast...

jhmomi
Tuesday, September 4, 2012 Day 36 of my Whole45 Exercise: 5 mile walk. Meal 1: 4 eggs, sweet potato and apricot puree, coffee with coconut milk. Snack: 1/2 ounce pistachios. Meal 2: Roast beef and guacamole lettuce wraps, plum, a few baby carrots. Meal 3: Salmon, kale sauteed with ghee and a little chicken broth, a plum, a few baby carrots, a handful of grapes. Snack: 1 ounce raw almonds. Feeling really good but tired from the long weekend. Just didn't get enough sleep and was on the go too much but it was a fun family weekend. Today was busy but I was able to squeeze in a coffee date with KellyF from this forum. It was awesome to meet another Whole9 forum member in person. She had her 3 yr old with her and he is adorable. Very well behaved too. Such a cutie. We chatted about how each of us learned about Paleo diets and the Whole30 and some of the issues that come up when you are a Paleo Mom with a non-Paleo family. Stopped at Whole Foods today and bought a huge bag of kale. It has been a couple months since I bought any and I don't know why. Ate a large serving tonight at dinner and really enjoyed it. Look forward to having it again tomorrow. FYI - If any of you live near Whole Foods you might want to check your store's website, the Friday Special this week at my store (Merchant's Walk in Marietta) is GRASS FED GROUND BEEF for $4.99/lb. I know where I will be at 8am Friday morning!

sushifan
9:20 pace for five miles! I'm not sure I could run that fast if someone chased me with a knife I've been doing indoor cycling and am loving it. Have you found any change in athletic performance while on the W30? I'm only on Day 2, so I don't have any real data points yet. Less than 10 days to go for you!!
Laura B
I weighed myself on day 31 and have not weighed myself since. I think it breeds unhealthy mental behavior for me, so I haven't done it. I have definitely thought about it, but I feel good enough without a number in my brain. Just saw the sale for beef today and the boyfriend put in our order with the farmer last night! Oh well, we are going to Pigeon Forge Friday AM so it probably wouldn't have worked out anyway. I can see the crowd now!
jhmomi
9:20 pace for five miles! I'm not sure I could run that fast if someone chased me with a knife I've been doing indoor cycling and am loving it. Have you found any change in athletic performance while on the W30? I'm only on Day 2, so I don't have any real data points yet. Less than 10 days to go for you!! Does athletic performance improve? OMG YES! When I did Whole30 #1 in February I started with a personal trainer the same week I began my Whole30 so I had no way of knowing how the Whole30 affected my performance. I had been a couch potato for a long time with short spans of diet and exercise to lose some weight and then returning to the bad foods and laziness. Pretty pathetic I know, but a lot of people are like I was. So this time I began my Whole30 #2 (now a Whole45) on July 31st. I am still with the same trainer. I work out with him 3x a week for 30 minutes. Both of us can tell I have more energy for my workouts. I complete my sets a bit easier. I respond well each time we increase weights. This morning was awesome. I can't tell you exactly what we did for every set because we ramp up and Jonathan puts the weight on the bar for me (I swear that is one of the best parts about having a trainer!). For my final sets today I did 125 lb squats (2 sets, 8 reps each), overhead press 55 lbs (3 sets, 5 reps each) and deadlifts 135 lbs (2 sets, 5 reps each). The hardest for me is the final rep per set on overheads. Dang it's hard to build up strength and add weight on that. I only tried 135 lb deadlifts last week and my form was weak, but today Jonathan said it was near perfect. Running is easier. I started running a couple times a week in late July (started Whole30/45 on July 31. Never in my life has it come so easy to me. I have been exercising all year, but mostly strength training and walking inclines on the treadmill or just walking outside at a comfortable not too fast pace. Not cardio. So for me to build up to 5 miles in 6 weeks at a faster pace than I have done in prior attempts at running is pretty spectacular. I think it's a combination of strength training (strong legs help so much) and eating such a clean diet. I also recover faster and barely ever get sore from my workouts. A bit of muscle fatigue but not pain. I can't wait to see how fast I can run by Spring. I did a 5K in 27:22 a few weeks ago and I am still amazed to be doing this at my age. Not too shabby for a 45 year-old mother of three! It just shows you are never too old to get in shape and try to achieve peak fitness. I still have plenty of fitness goals (like completing one friggin pull-up) but I am willing to do the work to achieve them. Whole30 eating just makes it a bit easier! jhmomi
So much for logging food. Been a busy week. Have stayed compliant. Pretty much. I think I ate some turkey that was questionable. Got it from husband's tennis team friend that is a meat distributor. He bought some steaks and the gave him an extra package of turkey (ribs? dark meat with the bone). It was very tasty but seemed a little salty. Enjoyed it. I also grabbed a handful of roasted almonds from an open container we had before realizing they had canola oil. Oops. Wasn't my usual brand. Lesson learned. Easy exercise this morning. Walked and had a little jump rope fun. Won't be ready for double unders for a while but I am getting a little better at single unders. Glad I bought a really good and fast jump rope. Makes it a lot more fun. Spent afternoon dealing with check fraud and banks and credit agencies. Bank credited back the one check that cleared, but still a PITA to deal with the mess. Going to bed now. Hope to log food again tomorrow. So glad the weekend is almost here. Don't forget the grass-fed ground beef sale at WF tomorrow if you need to stock up. One day only sale.
jhmomi
Crappy, stressful day yesterday = too much snacking on fruit and nuts last night. Ugh! Today will be a nut free and fruit free day. Exercise: 30 minute conditioning workout - pushing sleds, ball slams, box jumps, footwork with low hurdles, etc. Today Jonathan gave me two 45 lb plates to hold and had me walk around the gym. I felt a little like the folks in the CrossFit games I see on TV carrying those 100+ lb containers as far as they can down the field. Had fun with that! Think my conditioning day is my trainer's favorite day to train me each week too. No client after me so we spent a bit more time after my workout and did bench press. Last two sets 80x5 reps and 85x2. Felt good. Can't wait to be adding a little more weight in a couple weeks. 100 lbs here I come! Meal 1: 4 eggs, black coffee. Stocked up at Whole Foods this morning. 20 lbs of grass fed ground beef 2 $4.99/lb. Had the butcher double wrap the packages for the freezer so it will hold up a couple months. Limit was 10 lbs but I didn't notice until after I had it wrapped. Customer service let me slide... I'll be making meatloaf for dinner one night and meatballs to freeze this weekend I think! jhmomi
Sunday, September 8th Fabulous run this morning. Felt good. 6.5 miles with a 9:20 pace. My longest run in 15 years. Hoping to make a 9 minute pace for my upcoming 10K since it's easier to run a little faster with a crowd. We'll see. Been compliant except about 15 kernels of popcorn last night. I made some fresh for the family and was on Day 40 so I decided to try some. Not as good as I remembered. Same for the kale chips I made, just not as tasty as I had hoped. Oh well. I have cut back on fruits and nuts a bit. Going to focus this week on eating a lot of protein and fats, veggie portions that aren't too huge, and as little fruit and nuts as I can manage. I bought a form fitting dress for my niece's wedding next weekend and don't want any bloat! I wish my waist would shrink up some. It's not big, but I did get surprised with an off-handed comment about it from a loved one during a recent conversation. Going to focus on consistent clean eating and regular exercise. I'm at the point of fine tuning my body a bit. I want to lose a little body fat without sacrificing any muscle so I am purposefully not trying to cut back much on calories. I think if I cut out a little mindless snacking and adjust portion sizes a small amount that I can achieve the results I want over the next several months. One good way to look at it now with Autumn here, I have until May until it's pool and beach season again so there is plenty of time for gradual improvement... On a side note, as I get more comfortable with my body this year, it has been more fun wearing cute clothes. With my shape changing gradually this year with exercise, I have fallen in love with dresses and skirts. It is awesome to wear more girlie clothes than I used to wear and get compliments as well as not obsess about whether the fit is perfect through the hips and thighs. With jeans and pants, sometimes just an inch larger or smaller makes a huge difference. I've always hated my legs before, but now I like them enough to go a bit shorter for skirts and dresses and wear some nice heels. For church this morning I wore a new skirt (above the knee, stretchy and form fitting style but not too tight) and got several compliments about it. Made my morning! Derval
Well done on your run, nice pace! I'm so jealous of dh, he got a 10k pb of 38:08 yesterday! I attribute to rhe paleo dinners im cooking him Re the clothes - It's definitely a pleasant part of weightloss, when I was 25lbs heavier I wore my "mummy uniform" of jeans & stripy jersey tops all the time. Dull. And I felt dull too. Have a new lease on life now! You'll be like a butterfly emerging from a cocoon come spring!
jhmomi
Derval - Your hubby is fast! It does sound like you understand my transformation. I lost about 30 lbs last year which was a bit much but have gained back 15 this year which wasn't a bad thing since I have also worked hard to get more fit. As for the clothes, It is interesting how differently I dress now. When I lost the weight I hesitated buying too many clothes until I knew I could maintain it. Unfortunately I lost a bit too much and then added weight when I started exercising more. I am a comfortable size now, but some pants from last winter are too small. So buying dresses and skirts now gives me more wiggle room for changes to my body as my body composition improves (more muscle, less fat), plus I look more girlie. I am also letting my hair grow to shoulder length after almost a decade of short cropped hair. WIth three kids, it was just the easiest. So overall I feel so much more pulled together than before and I am having fun with it. I bought a cute and short bright pink dress this week for my niece's upcoming wedding. It's a classic dress I can dress up or down depending on the occasion and it fits like a glove. It's like a little black dress only pink. I also feel like with added muscle I want to make an effort to balance it with flattering and more feminine clothing when I am not in my current mom uniform - exercise gear for the gym. Tonight was interesting. I went to dinner with my hubby (and no kids) which we haven't done for weeks. I ordered a salmon salad with oil and vinegar on the side and it was great. Lettuce, tomato, heart of palm, mushrooms, scallions. Didn't even have to special order anything because all the ingredients were compliant. I just asked for the salmon dry grilled without butter. And had Pelligrino with lime to drink. Yum. Anyway, my hubby ordered prime rib tonight and I tried a couple of bites. It was so good. So then I told him... "You know now that I have been eating this way for a while, I honestly would rather have a plate of your Prime Rib instead of cake or any other kind of dessert. I just like good meat." I thought it was fabulous to feel so satisfied with a compliant meal and not have one thought or feeling of deprivation or sadness at what I couldn't have. jhmomi
Had a good day today. Walked about 5 miles this morning and then did some important stuff after taking my youngest to preschool. I got a haircut, a mani-pedi and a brow wax. Tough morning pampering myself... Still compliant with my food. Packaging up lots of snacks and veggies for me and the kids but need to hit the Container Store again for some more containers. So much easier to fill a bunch at one time and then be prepared for days. Right now I have chicken, carrots, cherry tomatoes, and snow peas packed separately in little containers in the fridge. These are the containers I absolutely LOVE. Space saving and not too tall so they fit nicely in a backpack or purse... http://www.containerstore.com/shop?productId=10014892&N=&Ntt=food+keeper And cashews, almonds, and raisins in the pantry in these one and two ounce hinged jars... http://www.containerstore.com/shop/travel/bottlesMedication?productId=10024533&N=253+1000040&Nao=40 I even have salad dressing for me (and organic ketchup for my kids school lunches) packaged up in a few of these cute one ounce containers... http://www.containerstore.com/shop/travel/bottlesMedication?productId=10001449&N=253+1000040&Nao=20 Plus I have Primal Pacs for emergency meals. No excuses not to eat well! So glad this is becoming HABIT. Love not having to overthink this. FYI - The guy at the seafood counter at Whole Foods told me that they will have a Friday Special "this month" (didn't have exact date) on SCALLOPS - the big ones that are usually $21.99/lb. He said it would be a great deal so I plan to stock up on several lbs when they drop the price. Yum! Love those Friday specials!
