Blended frozen fruit as a jam substitute in dressing?

Recommended Posts

This recipe calls for a 100% jam, and I'm not sure I've ever heard of a jam that didn't contain some added sugar.  Do you think this recipe would work with blended frozen raspberries?  I'm on the hunt for a new viniagrette and I'm looking for a berry or fruity type this time.

Berry Vinaigrette Salad Dressing

1/2 c. olive oil
1/4 c. blackberry or raspberry jam (the 100% fruit kind)
1/4 c. balsamic vinegar
1/2 t. salt

Combine ingredients and whisk until smooth.

I'm not sure where you live, but in my area, most grocery stores have a selection of all-fruit "spreads" with no added sugar (I think technically they're not jams?). They're by the jams and jellies.

I'd think the blended berries would have a higher water content than the jam and might not have the same consistency, but might be worth a shot!

Physibeth, I made "jam" using Melissa's method in the link with frozen strawberries and a splash of organic apple juice and it totally worked!

In the future, I would adjust the ratios in the recipe above by halving the oil and balsamic, but the dressing turned out.  And I was so surprised how easy the strawberries cooked down into a jam.
