camilleteaches
Hello all! Just wondering if hemp hearts and chia seeds can be eaten during the Whole 30? Thanks! Camille
Moderators Tom Denham Posted August 1, 2012 Moderators Share Posted August 1, 2012 Edited response: Meat is superior to hemp for protein, but you can eat it if you like. It Starts With Food recommends avoiding chia seeds (page 104) based on their having similar health effects as grains.

missmary
Tom, Really? I was certain hemp was not allowed during a whole 30.--maybe there would be an exception for vegetarians, but for omnivores I wouldn't include it.

We don't want people using hemp protein powder during a Whole30 because powder is not real food and it is processed. Hemp hearts is the actual plant flesh, however, so I don't see why someone could not eat them if they wanted.
missmary
ok, I thought it was a pseudo-grain so I've eliminated it (which is good, because I think that I am sensitive to it.). Oh well, Whole30 or not, I'll keep avoiding hemp.
Sunbird33
I like to sprinkle hemp hearts over salad or cooked vegetables, like yams, to give them a bit of "punch" in terms of adding a bit more nutrition and satiety. I use them instead of pumpkin seeds or sunflower seeds on salads. I'm glad to learn they are compliant on Whole30.
