30 on Kauai

Aloha all, making my commitment for my Whole 30! Still the 31st for me due to the time zone out here in the middle of the ocean. I'm a recovering vegetarian (!) who realized that the wheat, gluten, and legumes weren't doing me any favors. Turkey bacon was my gateway meat ;) On to local grass fed beef, and got some bison and venison in the mainland recently. Count me in! Looking forward to some changes in the physical me....

Dad was proud of his heritage - his grandfather was from Donegal. I grew up listening to Irish music (and still do). Transplanted Californian surfer who loves the warmer water. Somehow feel at home on an island where it's green.... ;)

Thanks for the support ladies! I'm good with a wetsuit and booties (and perhaps a hood). Never used to get cold in Santa Cruz waters but have gone a bit soft after 16 years of warm water. Would love to surf Ireland though. Didn't get the chance when I was there twenty years ago. Has it been that long? Where does the time go?! Hopefully I'll get back there one of these days....

Thanks Janis & Tiffany. We had our wedding on Secret Beach and a short honeymoon up in Koke'e & down at Polihale.

I do miss certain things about Santa Cruz, especially being able to ride my bike everywhere....

Aloha Stacey - Farmers markets are where it's at for produce. There are "Sunshine" markets and others weekly. Sunshine markets are required to have only local produce, no products (jams or trinkets). Here's a link: http://www.kauai.gov/default.aspx?tabid=214

The other markets are not under the "Sunshine" rules and some sell local products. I am a bit more familiar with the markets (both kinds) on the North shore (Kilauea, Hanalei, Waipa) than those on the South shore (Poipu side). For all of them - get there early or the best pickings will disappear. There's a bit of a competitive rush when they open as people run to the farmers they know usually have what they want.

Kauai grass fed beef is sold in many places across the island. You can find it at the Chevron gas station in Princeville in their mini mart (prob the most expensive), Healthy Hut in Kilauea has it, and Kojima Store in Kapa'a apparently has it too. Chevron & Healthy hut has pre-pack and it is frozen, packed as 100% grass fed Kauai beef. Kojima Store has their own butcher and is more.... fresh(?). Sorry, new at this, I'm not the shopper in the family. I'm not implying that the frozen is old, just that Kojima Store is refrigerated rather than frozen as it is apparently butchered there. Listed as "Range Fed and dry aged." We haven't tried any from Kojima Store yet, but it, so far, looks to be about the best price on island ($3.99/lb). Of course all of this is moot if you're staying in Poipu (just the beef, not the farmers market bit). I know there are several ranches on island that do grass fed cattle, but I heard that some of it gets shipped off island. Googled Kauai grass fed beef and came up with this:

The third one (JKR) must be where the frozen sold at Chevron & Healthy Hut comes from as the logo is the same. Not an exhaustive list, just three that I picked at random(ish). Also, there are places on island that sell grass fed product. Kalapaki Beach Hut in Nawiliwili (Harbor Mall area) uses the local Kauai grass fed beef in their burgers, and is willing to do a lettuce wrap. I'm sure there are more. Sorry I don't have specifics for South Shore, though guaranteed you can find it there.

Enjoy your vacation!

Tiffany you're stoked!! I'm sure your in-laws scored. Which side of town? Missed my cold water surf on vacation this year, it just wasn't in the cards....

By the way, like the signature line. I may have to "borrow" it. ;)

Stacey - no problem at all. Glad that the recommendations are going to work for you. My advice on showing up early / on time especially holds true for that market, my wife said it would get pretty crazy when they opened it, though we haven't been to that one in a while. Google Kahau St., Kapaa and the arrow that pops up on the map is pretty close to where the market is. Easy to get to. You're staying in a good central location to go both directions for adventures. Enjoy!
