Night Shift + starting whole 30, thoughts?

Recommended Posts

I will be venturing into the whole 30 world on the 21st of April which is the same day I start a stretch of two weeks night shifts as a nurse. I work 3 nights a week (typically one night shift, off one day, 2 night shifts). Any thoughts from fellow night shifters? How do you balance staying away (snacks usually help) and keeping a normal eating schedule.

My husband switches from night shifts to day shifts so keeping him on a consistent eating schedule is key.

On the day he starts a night shift, he has his meal 1 at around 8, meal 2 at around 1, then pre-workout snack at about 5 (he cycles to work), then meal 3 at around 8 after he's started his shift. I also give him one more meal for around 1am. He then arrives home at about 8am where he will eat 'dinner' leftover from the night before. He then goes to sleep, wakes up at 5pm, and I've packed him meals 1 and 2 for his shift, and meal 3 he has when he arrives home the following morning. When he is done his night shifts, he arrives home at about 9am where he has his meal 3. He then sleeps for about 5-6 hours, then wakes up and has a Meal '3' at about 6pm, and then to shift his body clock, goes back to sleep at about 11pm, to wake up at 7am.

Does that make sense?

Hope that helps!

  • 3 weeks later...

I began April 20th and while I've been devouring the forum for about 4 weeks (gave myself 3 weeks to research, prepare and align every ounce of my being with this commitment), this is the first day I've jumped in and it was because of the night shift challenge. I found the nomnompaleo link in another thread by a night shift worker and it was just what I needed, along with another article she lists, http://robbwolf.com/2013/03/06/big-ol-pile-shift-work-dealing-off-hour-work/%C2'>

I hope your journey is going well.
