Anyone else have this problem

Recommended Posts

We finished Whole30 just great. We decided to stay with it generally for another 30. Other than stevia which I have used 4 times in tea and coffee, I have reintroduced nothing. We are 7 full weeks in, and for the past week to 10 days, I keep having pain in my bowels, like I have to go really bad. I cannot narrow it down. All I know is, some days I seem to have more volume out than in, which violates the laws of biochemistry. Hard to describe the feeling, just almost cramping way down low, and feeling like I need to go. Sorry for graphic post, but I am trying to figure it out.

Yes, actually I'm dealing with much the same thing.  After my reintroductions I started adding minor things like some sugar in things and not being too worried about soy in my tea.  I also started having the bad cramping with a feeling I had to go.  I went back to a clean W30 for this last week and it's finally starting to subside but hasn't completely cleared.  I'm still not sure what was the culprit or if it was just a build up of several things that my now cleaner system can't tolerate.

Of course my case is a bit different since you didn't reintroduce anything except one thing.  In addition to removing the stevia, you may want to read up on the other protocols like the the autoimmune and the low FODMAP to see if removing some of the items on those lists.  I know that's going to be my next step if things don't settle down soon.

Thanks for the good ideas, you guys! I am thinking of cutting out nuts as well. Could be that I am a little allergic too them, but you would think it would cause diarrhea, which is not my problem. I am cutting the stevia out as well after a few tries, because it really doesn't taste very good! I got the Sweet Leaf beand which isn't cut with other sweeteners, and to be honest, it is bitter to me.

HI Ladies,

I had the same issues (plus some more, including itching) with stevia once I reintroduced it.  I'm cutting it back out, and I'm also cutting out nuts. My plan is to spend the next two weeks slowly removing all nightshades and coffee for my whole30 AIP in May. I'm already FODMAP free ( including most coconut products and sweet potatoes) and have seen a huge improvement.

Just my nursing school education rearing its head - be careful with bowel changes - rectal pain, cramping, an urge to go when you don't need to, narrow stools, blood, mucous, etc... can be real issues.  I know that since I've gotten into paleo and now the W30 I tend to think that diet is the root of EVERYTHING but sometimes a real medical problem can pop up in the midst of a dietary change and be totally unrelated.  So just be careful - if you remove the stevia and find things don't change or if symptoms get worse you may want to see a doctor.  That is all :)

Did you have any symptoms before you added the stevia back in? I'd eliminate it, not add anything else and keep a food diary. If it doesn't clear up soon, see a doctor to rule out anything serious.

Sometimes a small changes in types of veggies and cooking methods can alter internal gas levels.

I may need to go to the doc, as I am having the lower bowel gas/urge to go, even when I don't need to, almost very day now. I am back to eating only compliant foods, and it's not seeming to help much. It's like the replacement digestive issue for the upper gi acid indigestion I had constantly before Whole30. It's odd that it didn't start until 35 days in.Thanks for the advice everyone.

I decided to try an experiment. I am not in the 30 day phase by the way, I am way past that. Yesterday I had pretty bad symptoms and I ate both dried apples and almond butter. Today I started the day off and ate eggs and sweet potatoes for breakfast, a banana as a snack, and for lunch had, eggs, chicken and an orange. No symptoms all day. Got home at 5:30 feeling great, but hungry, so I deliberately ate almonds....bingo 2 hours later, lower abdomen gas pain and that feeling of "if I could just go number 2, I'd feel better". But nothing happens.

So almonds? Wow, I have eaten these frequently, along with cashews for all my life without a problem. But I can cut the almonds out if need be. I wonder if cashews will cause the same symptoms? Only one way to find out.

were they raw almonds? Techniquely, there are no raw almonds on the market anymore unless you buy direct from the farmer or grow your own. They have to be pasteurized since there was an out break of salmonella related to almonds some time in the past. There are 2 types of pasteurization for almonds, a steam pasteurization and a chemical one. You don't know which type unless you ask the producer. I have read something about issues with the chemical type. Wonder if that could be the problem?

Great detective work, but if you continue having problems from other types of nuts or foods I'd go to the doctor anyway. It could be just almonds/nuts or IBS, but many inflammatory bowel diseases have the same symtoms and can be really dangerous to ignore. Also, any blood or mucus is a sign to call your doctor right away!

Your science teachers would be proud ;)

I've had digestive issues for YEARS.  Never in a million years did I think it was nuts.  I eliminated nuts (but not coconut - though I vaguely recall reading that is a seed...).  GI symptoms were amazingly better in just 48 hours.  I too reconfirmed by a reintroduction that resulted in diarrhea within 2 hrs (though, to be fair it was a rather massive reintroduction... :/ via almond butter).  I'd be interested to hear about abstaining and reintroducing specific varieties and how it impacts you.

But don't forget about the advice about seeing a GI doc - bowel changes that just don't seem right are worth checking out!

That's really interesting because I have found that the Lara Bars I was having as an emergency snack were a culprit.  I've also found I need to eat more starchy/bulky veggies which helps as well.  I have not tested just straight up nuts but I believe I will just to see if that was what it is in the bars.
