I think I'm too old to know about instagram, LOL> Ileen, welcome.

I am feeling strong and committed today. More water is my goal.

Steak house power, very impressive.

JLMathis - I think it's great it's natural for you. Even though I'm a huge snacker and grazer it is even getting easier for me. I'll think I'm hungry (5 or so hours after I've eaten) and then I'll think..."WOW, I didn't think about food or eating for 5 hours". When bowls of food are everywhere, that is a different subject.

Hi everyone! i just found this forum yesterday. I started May 1st. I have been reading through all of your posts. THANK YOU!! I have felt your concerns and pain. I have been thinking about all the things I have learned so far. Sugar is in everything, beware! I feel better when I eat more protein, I feel full and not stuffed. Melissa Joulwan from Well Fed is right I go through Veggies like crazy, no more spoiled food in the veggie drawer. I do use salt more. Is this a bad thing? I am using the food template but still am not sure of ratios because I am often hungry for my next meal before its time.  I have started whole30 to find out what food has been hurting my joints and stuffing up my nose for most of my life. I know that I prolly have milk and dairy intolerances. But I still have symptoms after cutting out most dairy. But I have learned in the past 11 days that I have found hidden milk and sugars in my tea that I have been drinking everyday for a few years and much more. It is shocking when you really read the labels. I have been an avid label reader most of my life but for different reasons. Fat, preservatives and as of late calories. I have been counting calories for a couple years and always felt hungry, yes lost weight but it took a long time even with my spin classes. Since I started my whole30 I haven't done any workouts because I have been so tired and was programed to load up on carbs to get through them. It is a really mind spin for me to eat more (good) fat and not worry about the portions. In fact I have to tell myself to eat more to get me through to lunch so as not to snack~ which has been always fruit or a smoothie. This week I am committing to walking and see how my energy holds out. I did some yard work over the weekend and was so weak from not eating my lunch on time. Live and learn. I also signed up for the newsletter, thank you, Im really looking forward to hearing how everyone is doing on there journey  :D

Marita,

Thanks for joining us and sharing. You've convinced me, I'm signing up for the newsletter.

I too notice my sinuses are getting better and definitely my joint and muscle pain has lessened.

Anyone else feel awful???

Hi everyone!

Day 8 for me too. I feel terrible and have felt that way for the last 3 days. I keep wondering if this is normal or something else is going on. I feel fatigue, sore muscles, occassional nausea, and just generally unwell. :( Anyone else feel this way? Is it just that i'm detoxing? I can't wait to feel better. I am not as hungry as i was the first few days, but it is still a big effort to plan meals. I will get through. Wishing all of you the best!

srdurham,

So sorry to hear that. I don't have enough experience to know what other people have felt. I still don't have my normal stamina, but I'm also not exercising due to a hip injury.

I would always suggest you make sure you're getting enough water. Sometimes adding in the sweetpotato gives you a little boost.

Good luck.

srdurham......I dont think I have read about many people feeling that bad. I was dizzy for a couple days the first time around but I didnt feel as you have described. Could you have allergies this time of year that are making you feel bad or a common cold? Make sure you are eating enough and hydrating. This is not a cleansing or a diet, just a program to get you accustomed to a better understanding of what and how you eat. I hope you feel better soon. Stay strong!

Marita...welcome! It sounds liek you are off to a good start and with a great attitude. Like everything else, try not to consume too much salt and make sure you stay hydrated. I was very surpised how thirsty I was by the end of the second week. My lips were chapped and I drank water like crazy. Your salt intake will not help this. Keep going and good luck.

Thanks Dave and Miki! srdurham, I felt very tired but not nauseous, but i have read others feeling this way. I agree drink lots of water not only to stay hydrated but to flush your system. I had headaches the first 3 days and my shins were itching terribly for two days!?? I drink lots of mineral water with lime and black tea in the AM green tea in the afternoon and rooibos in the evening. Good news!!! I just finished my walk. 45 minutes up 1000 foot climb from my house and back 2 miles all together. I did not get weak, my muscles were tired but not as bad as I had expected and my breathing was not as labored. Great news! my joints were not nearly as sore as expected seeings how I haven't walked this for at least 3-4 months and I got a over 5000 step badge from my fit bit :)  I had 1/3 sweet potato cooked with onion and  coconut oil, 2 eggs over easy,2 (big) dollops guacamole and salsa for breakfast about 2 hours before I left. It was just fine :P. Also the weather went from high sixties yesterday to high eighties now. Usually when the barometric pressure changes like that my joints ache horribly it hurts just to move them. Not so much  today, I hate to say anything for fear of jinxing it  :( but there may be something to this, god I hope so!! Keep it up!

You might be coming down with something, or you might not be eating/drinking enough.

If you'd like to confirm whether you're on the right track, post 2-3 days worth of your food log, along with your daily water consumption, nightly hours of sleep and any exercise you're doing in the Troubleshooting section. Folks here can then give you feedback on possible tweaks.

Doing great here.  My kids are back to being compliant after my husband off-roaded with them last weekend, and our life is peaceful again.  I had my bone broth for breakfast with some chicken salad a little later.  Lunch will be carnitas, as will dinner.  The veggie of the day is broccoli.  An apple for fruit.

I've been getting really bad leg cramps.  I was at Costco looking for magnesium supplements, and also fish oil supplements.  I can't swallow capsules, though, so I may need to resort to a spoonful of cod liver oil.  Anyone taking supplements here?

Welcome to all the newbies, great to hear your stories!

Day 8 is almost over, raining and cold here so not so energetic so taking a night off to relax.

Not hungry either which is a good thing!

Have a good evening everyone, see you tomorrow!

I posted this on my log today but I'm sharing it here as well:

What a rough day...my baby is teething and pretty miserable, so I didn't even make dinner until after she was in bed (so I relied on nuts and raisins this afternoon to keep me going!). Today made me realize that I definitely do eat when I'm emotional, cause the idea to eat some junk food popped into my head all day (and I know it's just because my day just felt hard cause of the baby). Normally my husband can give me a bit of a break but he's working late. Not feeling very positive but thankful to be safely moving on to day 10.

I tried lots of things to keep us both a little less grumpy, like going for a walk, playing in the yard, giving the baby a bath, and reading a lot of books. It was 85 degrees out so we couldn't be outside very long. I know I am so lucky to be a stay at home mom and in general my days are very pleasant, but it's so draining trying to make a grumpy baby happy all day. Feeling very fatigued today but I'm assuming that is also because of the baby...

On a different note, I LOVED that scale article Miki and GFchris posted! Totally changed my view of my weight and the scale. For those of you who aren't on instagram, the whole30 account sometimes posts people's photos with the hashtag #nonscalevictory.

Today I experienced my own non-scale victory- my husband bought me a summer-y j.crew small tshirt for christmas (on final sale!) and I thought it would always feel too tight to wear. Well I tried it on today and it fits perfectly! I am so pleased I'll be able to wear it this summer. I think I've had the idea that post- whole30, I'll just go back to eating like I used to and use the scale to stay on track. But now I really feel like I should keep eating as close to whole30 as I can, regardless of what the scale says.

I'm also starting to keep a list of recipes that I plan to make after the whole30- that might call for just an ingredient or 2 that are non-compliant.

@Marita- it's nice to have you here, I am starting to think dairy is a real problem for me cause I'm definitely a lot less stuffy these day!

I wish I wasn't hungry...

There is no reason to be hungry on a Whole30. If you've already had 3 meals and you're hungry, you have  options: have a compliant beverage, or a mini meal containing a protein and fat.

Tomorrow, start playing with your protein, veg and fat portions at each meal until your meals satiate you for 4-5 hours.

Rough day, minor surgery this morning meant I couldn't eat til after noon, was then starving and also emotional.

Desperately wanted sugar and carbs to satiate but settled for mucho celery with almond butter and raisins.

Just feasted on a little too much shrimp with coconut milk, garlic, basil.

Given what the day held, I guess not too bad. Tomorrow is another day.

Today was my best day so far!  I am so happy that I found compliant unsweetened passion tea yesterday.  Normally I get hungry around 3pm, but today I had a glass of tea and was able to keep the hunger away.  I cooked up plenty of food to last me until Thursday tonight, which will get me though the majority of my busy week.

Miki~ I was feeling the same, hungry between meals. I started eating more protein and that seems to have helped lots. Also I think that walk today really helped. Hang in there  :)

bluegrass mama~ sometimes its hard being a mom, but adding this in really adds the pressure. It sounds like your a good mom and taking the right steps with the baby. Remember to give yourself credit and pat yourself on the back. You can do this! My nose is still a little runny and stuffy but i think its better. Tomorrow is another day~another chance to do it again.

Hi all

Blue-grass mama- you are doing a great job. Parenting is challenging but you stayed creative with your baby all day. That is awesome.

Deb c- sorry to hear about your difficult day and surgery. Great job not caving into temptations. Hope tomorrow is better.

Kaetee- great job. I love the passion ice tea. I drink it in the afternoons.

Marita- welcome. I suffer from joint pain too. Hope thus works for us.

I'm am concerned I'm eating too much fat. How does this sound:

Breakfast - scrambled eggs, with spinach cooked with ghee. Along with a side of avocado.

Dinner- steak cooked with olive oil. Cauliflower cooked with ghee and a side of gaucomole.

I read the template. I think I'm having too many servings of fat. Is it recommended to eat let's say an avocado and along with a protein cooked in fat?

Thanks all. We are strong (and perhaps a little tired and snacky)

Renee

Hi 5/5s,

Chris, indeed you are right. I just didn't have anything in the office, so I decided to post and pout. Then the hunger went away. I had to go shopping after work, but got home, ate a little sauerkraut while I cooked chicken sausage and asparagus.

Deb, that shrimp dish sounds amazing.

Kaeteee - good job on your tea.

Renee and Marita, I share the same concern about the fat, but am trying not to overthink it.

I'm reasonably content and am trying not to think about food anymore tonight.

I opened two new jars today...I haven't been able to open a jar without "techniques" in a while. I would assume my pain level is low enough that I can tolerate it...awesome!

Hi every one! Sorry I have been absent from here for a few day. I have hurt my neck (not uncommon and very annoying) and not feeling great. Food wise I am going just fine. A forced day at home today with my sore neck and a sick little girl, taking the opportunity to make bone broth and more mayo. Can't do too much more chopping though. No idea what is for tea feeling very uninspired.

Salt - I use more salt than in the past but I know I consume LESS salt than if I were to eat processed foods.

Blue grass mama - well done for recognising you are eating for emotional reasons and for staying strong. Having a small baby is so all consuming. It is completely worth it but it is hard work.

Deb c - well done for staying strong and not letting your day be an excuse to cave.

renee - that doesn't sound like too much fat but I'm no expert. You can post in the trouble shooting section if you are worried best chance an expert will answer you :)
