Vitamin D Recommendation

About 3 months ago, I was diagnosed with a Severe Vitamin D definiciency. My doctor had me on a 50,000IU perscription dose (taken 1x per week), but once that precription ended, she has instructed me to go on an over the counter Vitamin D supplement (at least 1000IU).I know my lab results a few months ago indicated my Vitamin D level was at 19.4 -- I work in a building the entire day, with floruescent lighting. The only time I get any sun might be on the weekends.

So I have 3 questions:

1) Is there a brand recommendation / type of Vit D that I need to look for? It's important that is Whole30 compliant, as I have intolerances to gluten, corn, soy, casein, and possibly eggs and yeast.

2) Is 1000 IUs enough? or should I bump up the dosage

3) When is the best time of day to take the Vitamin D -- I noticed when I was taking the precription, that the later in the day I took it, the more energy I had, thus the more restless sleep I had (I think that was due to the dosage though)

Thanks!!

I don't recommend supplements. I can only tell you what has worked for me.

I take 2 Country Life 5000 i. u. a day. The softgel contains MCT oil (coconut-palm oil) All Country Life supplements are gluten-free.

I take 10,000 i u's a day because I work inside all day, and when I was tested, I had the lowest Vitamin D level my doc had ever seen. (7) If I take less than that amount, joint pain returns.

I take mine in the morning because that is when I remember to take them.

I don't know what amount would work for you.

Thanks for your feeback. I understand about the "recommending" - just seeing if there are brands that people have found that are Whole30 compliant, and whether I needed to disregard the ones that were packaged with Fish Oil (found one that seems to be Whole30). I think I looked at the country life today, and the one that I was looking at had yeast in it (??), which I have to avoid (esp in something I have to take daily).

I was going to call the dr back to make sure that they want 1000, or to see if 2500 would be OK. I relistened to the message I had saved, and they recommended no less than 1000, but I know too much Vit D is bad.

Country Life D3 does not contain yeast and is Whole30 compliant. All of their Supplements are gluten-free. http://www.iherb.com...0-Softgels/9443

If you want to read more about Vitamin D and how toxicity is very rare, etc. vist the Vitamin D Council Website. http://www.vitamindcouncil.org/

I like this one: http://www.iherb.com/Healthy-Origins-Vitamin-D3-5-000-IU-360-Softgels/18335

Clear it with your doc first, of course, but I wouldn't worry about the doseage. My levels were around 50 in Marchish and I don't have any concerns popping one or two of these a week when I don't see the sun for a bit. 10 minutes of sun for a standard fair skinned individual is like 50,000iu, so 5k/day is really not that big of a deal, you know?

Additionally, if timing matters to you at all, vit d synthesis occurs at night, so I'd take it at night if that's ideal for you. Adagio, if that's when you remember, don't mess with it on my account, I just thought I'd drop the knowledge!

  • 5 weeks later...

One cautionary word on Vitamin D supplementation. I had this experience not long ago. My doc said I was a little low in Vitamin D and the BHRT implants and estrogen hormone cream would deplete it further, so he put me on 5,000 IU Vitamin D3 a day. I had read that most people can take something like 20,000 IU a day OK so I upped mine to 10,000 IU a day. In less than 2 weeks I lost my sense of taste for all things salty or sweet and recipes I'd made many a time just didn't seem to tast right anymore. I then did a little internet research on loss of sense of taste and lo and behold, I found out too much Vitamin D can do that. I dropped back down to 5,000 IU a day and my taste came back in under 5 days.

Just thought I'd mention that experience.
