emcdonough
I started on May 19, so this makes day 6. So far this has been a crazy ride. I have felt great and terrible. Day 4 was the worst by far, felt tired and frustrated and sweaty. I think that day I reached ketosis. I am now less hungry and getting in the habit of planning my meals ahead of time a little easier but I WANT A COOKIE and A DIET COKE. I never thought that iced black coffee would be a treat. Im taking it day by day cant wait to see results. Oh yeah, I had NO idea how much junk I was eating and how much junk is in my house. I can barely look in my pantry. Moderators Tom Denham Posted May 24, 2014 Moderators Share Posted May 24, 2014 Welcome. Hmm. We don't really talk about ketosis around Whole30-land. In fact, we encourage participants to eat carbs in the form of starchy veggies to the extent they need them to feel good. Most people feel better, especially when first doing a Whole30, to eat sweet potatoes or similar foods regularly. Needing more starchy veggies might be one reason you felt so bad on day 4. Eating sweet potatoes cannot stop all the pain. I ate as many as two per day when I was doing my original Whole30 and still felt "wrong" the first two weeks. emcdonough
I know, and I wasn't aiming for that but I know what the signs are. I added some more fruit after that, maybe I wasn't getting enough. Seems like I am the only one who really doesn't like sweet potatoes. At least not enough to make them my saving grace. I am making it work though. I do feel a lot better today. Physibeth
Starchy vegetables are really a better choice than fruit. If you don't like sweet potatoes there are others to choose from. Carrots, beets, pumpkin, acorn squash, butternut squash, parsnips, etc. 1-2 fist sized fruit servings enjoyed with or as part of a meal is good but don't give up on starchy vegetables. Desire Mapper
I am on day 7 today, too. I tried parsnips for the first time last night made similar to mashed potatoes. They turned out pretty well. That said, I didn't buy as many parsnips as recipes recommended to I supplemented with zucchini that was about to go off. Not sure how much of the flavor the zucchini contributed. One of my goals during this whole 30 is to try at least one new vegetable a week. I didn't grow up exposed to many, particularly root vegetables and it is a class of foods I have a long ways to go to learn how to prepare and enjoy. They scare me a bit, to be honest. Mostly, my vegetable source is a salad of cucumbers, red onions, vine tomatoes, garlic, and maybe some spinach. But I am realizing that I need more diversity because what i have been doing in the past to try to stay healthy has not stuck, partially because of boredom, as much as i love salads. And I love that some foods (non-salad ingredients) stay fresh longer. Breakfast is my most challenging meal. It still feels wrong having vegetables first thing in the morning to me, unless maybe they are tomatoes. And tomatoes get old.
emcdonough
I have also been trying new vegetables with varying amounts of success. I was raised with them but I never gave them much of a chance and now I want my kids to see veggies on the plate. I love spaghetti squash, baked shredded and topped with other sauteed veggies and crushed tomatoes. Worth a try. As for breakfast I have been mostly making scrambles. Just quick sautee tomatoes and spinach and crack to eggs into it. Its quick but its getting old. Ill look at parsnips!
Desire Mapper
Eggs have always made me feel ill. Even just the smell of them and I am always jealous (i know, evil word) of people who enjoy them because they provide so much variety. I think my easy solution to a breakfast is going to be learning some new form of scramble.
