day 13, accidentally been using canola this whole time.

Recommended Posts

Hi, I am on day 13 of the Whole30. I've been following the program to the letter (with the exception of once). I use olive oil on EVERYTHING. I'm somewhat liberal with my olive oil. My husband who is not doing W30 pointed out to me last night that the olive oil I've been using is a 'hybrid' containing 70% canola oil, 20% olive oil, 10% grape seed oil. Because I pour my oil into a decorative dispenser to keep at the stove side, this was unnoticed until my husband was refilling it last night. I never purposefully would have bought this oil, it's labeling is trickery.

My question is, how bad is this?! I've been consuming large amounts of canola oil daily. I was so upset last night, thinking I've ruined the whole process and needed to start over. Do I need to start over? I don't want to, while I've enjoyed my W30 experience so far, my children can not wait for it to end! this journey has been difficult but also surprisingly easy! it's not too far from my baseline diet.

So please, tell me about this canola oil issue. Guide me, let me know if I need to start over.

Thanks!

Canola oil is permitted on the whole30. It isn't encouraged, but it is not prohibited. Put the oil away and carry on.

When you are done with your whole30, I would think seriously about continuing to avoid canola oil. Changing cooking oil is a pretty easy switch that can make a big difference in your health.

Our concerns about canola oil is that it leads to more inflammation in the body than other available choices. Not so much that it is banned during a Whole30, but enough that we recommend avoiding it when possible. Grapeseed oil is similar, just less well known.

There are lots of ways vendors sell things with trickery. I was surprised when I looked at the ingredients for olive oil mayo in the grocery store. There is more soybean oil in it than olive oil. The olive oil is to provide a marketing hook, not to provide you with a healthy mayo.

You may have lost a tiny bit of good from your Whole30 experience by consuming canola oil as much as you have, but not enough to justify starting over. Soybean oil would have required a restart, but not canola or grapeseed oil.

Thank you for the relief. Like I said, I never would have purchased this product had I looked more closely at the label. We never use canola or any veg oil in the house.

I was really upset last night thinking I've ruined the whole experience. Now, while I have your atrention, I think I may be having too big of portions. Is this possible?

Moved this thread to the Troubleshooting forum.

Too big of portions of what? If it's the oil, the recommendation portion size for each meal is 1-2 thumb-sized portions.  What makes you think you're eating too much?  For folks here to help you, post 2-3 days worth of your food log with portion sizes, so you can get feedback on whether you're on the right track.

Ahhhhh.... this was SO helpful and I feel better. I just ate some dried vegetables (that were amazing - I have to do this myself) that took away my sweet AND hunger cravings. But then looked and it said canola oil. I'm only on Day 2, but I've been doing great and really am trying to stay "perfect"30.  No more for me!
