aturcotte
Okay, so I am asking this on behalf of a friend. We are starting a Whole30 challenge at our gym on June 1st and she mentioned to me that she has extreme, unbearable stomach cramps after eating certain vegetables. The veggies she told me were: mushrooms, broccoli, asparagus and lettuce (although spinach and kale are generally okay). Cauliflower, cucumbers, peppers, tomatoes, carrots, sweet potato, green beans, zucchini, brussel sprouts, onions, are all OKAY though! So my mind is blown. The things I thought could be grouped together, can't. I've heard someone say before that sometimes people have to deal with some discomfort while their body is getting used to eating veggies again, but I can't attest to this, nor would I want to tell someone (or feel like I'm forcing them) to deal with extreme discomfort that "should" go away eventually. Because what if it doesn't? And we're just doing more damage than good? Can someone give ANY insight on this?! Thank you!!!
Tina R
I am not an expert but your friend could have a sensitivity to FODMAPS. Some fruits and veggies cause the discomfort you describe. There is a special shopping list that could help. Good luck! http://whole30.com/2013/06/expanded-iswf-shopping-lists/.
missmary
I would suggest your friend limit the veggies that give the worst stomach cramps, at least for now. There are lots of veggies left! In addition to that, cooking veggies can help a lot during the transition, so she could consider eating only cooked veggies for a while.
