letsdoyoga
May 23 was my first day of Whole30, so that makes today Day#6. So far, so good. I noticed many times during the first 2 days how I would normally just do things like finish my 10-year-old's unfinished French Toast, and the like. Having this program gave me exactly the boundary I needed to pass these things up. So I'm doing just fine. I've already been doing quite a few things for my health including drinking lots of freshly pressed green juices, Bikram Yoga 3 days a week, and I've been off red meat for years (even though I know this is not part of the Whole30 plan, I just don't eat red meat). So I haven't been having any detox symptoms. At times, I've been tempted to eat something off plan, but it hasn't been too bad. The thing is that the salmon and organic eggs that I eat along with tons of salad greens, fresh fruits and veggies, some nuts, fresh nut milk, and raw salad dressings really satisfy me well so far. What is really new for me is that I discovered a new way to drink coffee. I don't have coffee often, but when I do, I love it with half and half. So now I have it with my homemade almond or hazelnut milk, and a touch of organic coconut oil. It is BETTER tasting than half and half! If anyone is interested in recipes for my nut milks, I am happy to share. They are easy to make and seriously YUMMY! I'm also starting to drink much more since I've been doing Bikram Yoga (hot yoga), and I simply have to be better hydrated. I've been incorporating coconut water with my fresh juices to stretch them and to get more hydrated. I am quite happy to be doing this plan, and it is likely to be a better choice for me than a mostly raw diet, which I have not really been able to implement. It is true that I have issues with food (most people do to some degree), so it's more than just a standard discipline issue, but I just end up falling off the "raw wagon" quickly and frequently, and then I eat things like cheese eventually, and this ruins my efforts to improve my health through good food. Whole30/Paleo is feeling good so far! -Lisa
GlennR
Glad you're on this journey! A couple of points, though: I'm sure you're aware that French Toast is not compliant (wheat, gluten). If you had it the first couple of days, those couple of days sort of don't count. You can just add the two days to the end and make it a Whole32, though, and you're good. Juicing is discouraged in Whole30. Drinking your vegetables sends different satiety signals to your brain than eating them, which disrupts the healthy and optimal eating and digesting rhythm that Whole30 is trying to set up for you. (Also, if you are discarding the pulp and just drinking the juices, you miss out on a lot of the fibers and nutrients.) Juicing is not a cause for re-set, but for the best chances of a really successful Whole30, it is advisable to avoid doing it for the rest of the month. Good luck! Whole30 Certified Coach littleg Posted May 28, 2014 Whole30 Certified Coach Share Posted May 28, 2014 I'm pretty sure she didn't eat the French Toast I can't eat nuts so I won't bother asking for the nut milk recipes... but what are the raw salad dressing recipes? I know a lot of raw/vegan stuff seems to be based on soaked and then ground nuts for a "cream" base but do you have any that are nut free? How long have you been doing Bikram? I've been on the fence about going to a hot yoga Bikram class to try to balance out my crossfitting and running but so far keep dragging my feet. Because its something new. And therefore scary
letsdoyoga
Didn't know that about the juices - oops. I didn't eat the French Toast during my Whole30 - turned it down and tossed it away, and I'm so proud of myself too! I will turn my attention to the coconut water and green tea during my Whole30 instead of the freshly pressed juices. The hydrating is essential doing this type of yoga, and water sometimes with cuc or lemon is great too. I've been doing this yoga for about 4 months, and it's great. I read about it in a wonderful book called Hell Bend, by Benjamin Lorr, and thought I would never do it even though it really got my motor going. Well, in late January, I just jumped in and started. Studios vary greatly, but I found a wonderful one very close to my home that recently opened. I average going 3 times a week, and in June I am shooting for 4 times a week regularly. Littleg, if you would like to know more, message me, and I am quite happy to share or respond to any questions you may have. As for recipes for raw salad dressings without nuts, this is one of my favs: 1 cup fresh strawberries, 1 shallot, 1 tbsp dijon mustard (without any wine or sweeteners), 1/4 cup coconut vinegar, 1/2 cup organic extra virgin olive oil (EVOO); Put all of this in a food processor or high speed blender until smooth. You can keep this in the frig for quite a while, and you can thin it out if you like as you go. I eat a huge salad every lunchtime with about 1/3 lb organic salad greens, with lots of cucumber and tomato and sometimes other fresh and raw veggies depending on what i have on hand. I add 6 oz of freshly fried salmon (in ghee) to that, and it is very satisfying and enjoyable. By dinnertime, I am never really very hungry, but I'll eat fresh fruit and sometimes a few soft boiled eggs. On many weekends, there are lots of temptations for me to eat an entire dinner that would include mostly things off a Whole30 plan. I got through last weekend unscathed, even turning down cheesecake (which I adore). Gotta go for now - my little one is coming home soon.
letsdoyoga
It's Day #9, and I was tempted briefly this morning to eat something off plan. But it was short-lived, and I just ate a few hard boiled eggs and then set about making my enormous brunch salad with salmon. It feels very good. I'm starting to lose a bit of weight - I can feel it. Yea!!
letsdoyoga
Day#10, and I was again tempted this morning, as I made gluten-free high protein pancakes for my kids. But I resisted, ate lots and lots of raspberries, and some eggs. Feeling very good, and it really feels like I am breaking some sort of log jam in my weight. It just feels like I'm on the right track, and I'm getting more excited about going forward with this, certainly beyond the 30 days!
letsdoyoga
Day #11, and tempted again, but didn't give in or seriously consider it. I feel like I am doing exactly what i need to be doing for myself!
letsdoyoga
Day#14 and doing just fine! No cravings at all today either!
GlenG
Sounds like you're into the swing of it. Over half way through it today, aren't you?
letsdoyoga
I cooked a dinner for the extended family this Saturday and went out to dinner last night, and managed just fine. When I went out last night, I just had steamers, and avoided the temptations of finishing my daughter's scrumptious looking pasta dish, and chocolate mousse too. It's Day #18 for me now, and I've been sub teaching for a 3rd grade teacher for a few days, and today is my last day at that. Fitting my other business around this isn't easy, and I have to make an effort to eat anything for lunch or I will get hungry and potentially get myself into trouble. It is SO SO much easier to do this without cravings and without being starved, and this is what keeps me ON. I can't really see much difference in my weight, but I never lose weight any faster than 1 lb per week, and that is probably a good thing. On June 21, I'll check my weight and see where I am then. letsdoyoga
Interesting: I do Bikram Yoga (hot yoga), and you sweat buckets doing this. Well, over the past month or so, I've missed more classes than usual. I usually do this 3-4 times a week, and over the past 2-3 weeks, twice I only went 1x/week. The interesting thing is that my sweat usually smells either sweet or acidic. Today, my sweat didn't smell AT ALL. It is Day#20 of the Whole30 for me, and I cannot help but think that this lack of smell in my sweat is due to what I haven't been eating now for almost 3 weeks. I'd be curious to know if anyone else has noticed this type of change while being completely off dairy/sweetners/wheat/alcohol/preservatives. letsdoyoga
I'm on Day#25, and going strong! I just have no cravings and am totally satisfied with what I am eating. Our vacations this summer are all in New England so I am seriously looking forward to the seafood! This way of eating is a lifetime incorporation for me. I'm sure I will have the occasional glass of wine, and such things here and there. But I want to be careful that the vast majority of my eating omits all these "whole30" No-No foods. My doing this is not only about losing my extra weight, but it is for lifetime health. I'm 54, and I have young children. I want a high quality of life for MANY years - to see grand children, grow up with them, create at least 1 more career, and much more. QUALITY of life is everything, and we've been brain washed to believe that a "good" life is one chock filled with as much fatty/sweet/fried whatever that we can eat. I've got a different recipe and it's working for me!! I'm so psyched to be doing this and to see an impact!
letsdoyoga
It's Day#28 for me, and yesterday for the first time, I experienced some detox symptoms, and they are continuing today, albeit less obvious. I have no idea how much weight I've lost, but I do see a difference in my body. The biggest difference for me with this change in eating is the powerful LACK OF CRAVINGS for food. Now I feel satisfied with what I am eating, and I never feel that overpowering urge to just eat-eat-eat. I doubt I've lost more than 2 or perhaps 3 lbs, but that is just the way my body works. When I lose weight, it is very slow, but it's healthy that way. This is just the re-set I have been needing for a long time now, and I am very grateful to have found this! letsdoyoga
I completed the 30 days easily, and have gone on. Last month, while on vacation, I fell off a bit, but not much. I didn't have any dessert, or cheese, and the only grain was some ultra thin tortillas (2), and they were small. But I did have french fries. I gained about 1/2 a lb over that week, and then the next week I had difficulty just eating too much fruit, and started eating some high fat pork products which is not typical for me. I feel alittle bigger, and I feel like I have subtly lost that feeling of "no cravings". So now I have to get back to that feeling that keeps me from wanting to over eat. My mentality needs to shift back to where it was before vacation. My bloodwork clearly indicates that I am in good shape with the exception of my sugar which is borderline. My doctor says it is all about my weight just being too high, and not what I am eating now. If I don't lose the weight, I will end up like so many in my family, with diabetes. That is just unthinkable for me. I think 25 lbs would probably be enough to lose, although I would love to lose more like 30-35. Right now, I just want to break through the plateau that I haven't been below since about 2005. I don't want to restrict my intake overly, but I know I have to do something more, in addition to exercise. It's hard at this age, and I'm newly post-menopausal, which seems to make it harder too. I'll be 55 over the holidays, even though I don't look my age, and I take good care of myself overall, which makes it easy to be proud of my age. But my health is of paramount importance, and coming to terms with the sugar warning sign is huge for me.
