chaoticspaces
Hello everyone! I'm a few days into my first Whole30, and I'm having a lot of trouble finding deli meats that actually meet the "no added sugar" rule. I live in Canada, so I don't have this "Whole Foods" store you keep talking about, and I'm a broke college student with no ways of buying it from a farmer because my wallet really can't take it. Does anyone know of a brand in Canada that would fit the criteria? Talking about things like sliced chicken and roast beef, by the way.
Moderators Tom Denham Posted May 30, 2014 Moderators Share Posted May 30, 2014 Deli meats that meet the minimum requirements of the Whole30 are hard to find... almost impossible. And if you are living on a small budget, you can do better than deli meats by a long shot. Buy a whole chicken, simmer it in a pot of water for an hour with salt, garlic powder, a little red chili powder, and maybe a hint of ground cinnamon. The chicken should be fully cooked after an hour. Remove it from the pot, pick all the meat from the bones with tongs or your hands once it is cool. Then you will have enough chicken to feed you for 6 or 8 meals.
chaoticspaces
I mean, the deli meats we used to eat were cut from an actual piece of roast beef, they were just sliced super thin and I like them that way - maybe it's the texture? I can't really replicate that at home and unsurprisingly I'm on a time budget for most of the year too. I'll try this until I can find a decent deli that fits the requirements. Thanks for the recipe! angekfire
The only one I can think of off hand, is prosciutto, but even then you still need to read the ingredients to make sure it doesn't have any additives, but often it doesn't.
CaGirl
Buy a roast at the store and put it in the oven.. Only difference will be getting it sliced as thin as deli meat. I'm the same way with the sliced roast beef. Love it.. Second ingredient is SUGAR on my brand at he local market.. No wonder it had me sucked in to eating it almost daily. Anyway, now I but a roast, doctor it up with Salt, Pepper, Granulated Garlic and vola,, I have my own sliced meat..
Carlaccini
Hey There Deli meat is very hard to find. To date I have found only Proscuito (Loblaws Presidents Choice brand) and Maple Leaf's Natural Selection Hot dogs. (Keep note - there are some with cane sugar here and some without so make sure you read ALL ingredients lists) To me the hot dogs are not the ideal choice as it comes from factory farmed pork and they actually make me break out. So they are like an emergency/emergency food for me. A boiled egg wrapped in proscuito is a great pre-work out meal or snack. Doing a roast is good - slow cooker style. it takes minutes to prep and you can leave it in the slow cooker overnight. If you don't have a slow cooker - borrow one (possibly your parents or a close family friend?) or possibly get one from a second hand store. Either that scour amazon for good deals (they can be found) Where abouts in Canada are you. Whole Foods do exist in Canada but in limited locations.
