Reset after reset...anyone else in the same predicament?!

Recommended Posts

Hi Everyone!

I started my first Whole30 back on May 5th. I am sadly only on Day 13, and have to start over on Day 1 tomorrow. I am _so_ frustrated!! I bought the wrong kind of sausage this week...they have honey in them, which I didn't notice until I started eating them this morning. Grr!!  :(  I've had probably six different resets in the last month, because of hidden ingredients. Has anyone else had this much difficulty with hidden ingredients sabotaging them?

Overall, I have been enjoying Whole30. Before I started this, I had been a vegetarian/sometimes vegan for the last four years. (big change, right?) Several of the people I work out with have been either Paleo or grain-free for the last two years, and I finally decided to take the plunge as well, because even as a grain-free vegetarian I wasn't sure I was the best "me" that I could be. (I should mention that I am a food addict with a major sugar dragon that needed to be slayed.)

So technically it's been a month of Whole30, with such things as sugar-containing broth tripping me up, as well as canola oil in my dry-roasted cashews. I do feel, though, that I was starting to reap some of the benefits of the program already. I feel like pants fit a little better, and I had an amazing four mile run last week; I haven't run that fast in almost a year, so it was a pleasant surprise when I finished the run.

My family is still eating a predominantly SAD lifestyle, so I am turning here to the forum for some feedback and a little support.  I've lurked here and there, gaining motivation from others' successes. But I am just having a rough patch of it today.  Thanks for reading!! I will continue on, but I just really REALLY needed to vent.

Great news! Accidental consumption of Honey does not call for a restart so you are on day 14 or more. Actually accidental ingestion of canola oil doesn't call for a restart either so you may be further along than you think.

The best thing you can do for yourself is to stop buying premade products. Most of them have non compliant ingredients as you have found out. I know it is time consuming but it is much easier to make everything from scratch. The easiest meal I make is stir fry ground meat with veggies. You can add sausage spices in the morning or you can just add salt and pepper. That way you don't have to buy premade breakfast sausage or Italian sausage.

There are compliant chicken broths out there I use imagine cage free chicken broth. Read labels to make sure it is still compliant. Their beef and veggie broth are not compliant.

You are doing great! Don't beat yourself up. Keep going! I am so glad that you are feeling some benefits!

I suggest eating very simply for 30 days.  Don't buy anything in a package.  Eat the same things every day, the things you KNOW are compliant.  It might be boring, but it will be super simple and you won't have to think about it so much.  Then, as you get the hang of it, you can start adding things and reading labels and all that stuff.  If you feel good, keep going!  Good luck!

I understand your frustration, but why don't you reframe it and tell yourself that while you haven't quite strung together 30 days of "perfection" so can't say you've "done a Whole 30", you've incredibly improved your health just from having 30 days of great eating.

Like that old running saying "Dead last is still faster than the people still sitting on the couch".

Thanks for the input everyone!  The sausage thing really upsets me because I bought them at my local Co-op, and I know that they had compliant sausage. I just happened to apparently not buy those. GoJo09, I can relate to the running saying, having just taken up running in the last two years.  :)  :)

Later this summer, I am headed overseas to visit family in Poland. They have already bought a jar of coconut oil for me, and I know we'll be able to do lots of great grilling, too. I may not be compliant the whole time I am there, but I am going to try and stick as close to the program as I can.   :D
