abbyn
During my last whole30, I rarely ate out because I was so stressed about finding something compliant, but this round I'll be traveling and would like to know I can go out if needed. I'm visiting Pennsylvania and there's diners everywhere up there- is there any way to get eggs for breakfast without anything non-compliant? I don't know what oil/(butter?) they use to cook them on the grill or if I got a cheese-less veggie omelet could there be something non-compliant involved? (like canned mushrooms with some funky ingredients)... are poached eggs my only option? Or, if I were to order steak and eggs, don't most places cook steak in butter or oil? I guess I could order a salad with grilled chicken but even that stuff comes premarinaded alot. AHHH!
GFChris
Poached and hard-boiled eggs are your safest egg bet. If you were to get an omelette, you'd need to be sure there's only egg in the omelette batter. Some places add dairy, some (iHop) add pancake batter. Also, be sure they cook the omelette and veggies in a compliant oil: no soybean oil, no corn oil, no rice bran oil or butter. I would stay away from bacon, sausage and ham - not likely to be compliant in a diner. Steak or chicken: watch out for marinades and seasonings. Only salt and pepper and ideally dry-grilled. Sliced tomato is a good side veggie option with your eggs. If all else fails, fresh fruit cup.
Guest Andria
You will just have to ask questions. I am not sure that I would trust that you will get accurate answers from diner staff. I am not being disparaging, I just think they may have less experience dealing with people who have dietary limitations.
abbyn
Thanks Chris and Andria... I think I may just keep cooking for myself after all!
MeadowLily
My mother plays cards with her lady friends. There's one lady who can't stand "food purism". One woman only drinks decaf coffee...so Ms. Non-Compliant makes her regular fully caffeinated coffee. She places a sticky.."Decaf" on the pot.... tells the lady, "Oh yes, it's Decaf", then laughs herself silly. I think most places will make everything the way they normally do and then tell you, "Oh yes, it's just the way you ordered it". If most of us only knew how special requests are met with repercussions in the kitchen. It might be bounced off the floor a few times or thrown up against the wall and put back on your plate. I never send anything back and I try not to be too pesky with demands. When in doubt, don't eat out.
abbyn
Haha that's awful about your mother's friend, MeadowLily! I agree, I don't think all my pesky questions will end with a compliant meal. I think I'll just have to cook what I can and do my best.
