Dairy reintro question

Did my first reintro with dairy yesterday:  cream (in coffee), yogurt, feta cheese, ice cream.  Did pretty well (so I thought), but ended up a little bloated last night and this morning had a stomach ache and very loose stools.  Hadn't experienced any of that during my 30 days eating compliant.

I plan on trying to narrow down the culprit (milk vs. yogurt vs. cheese) before moving on to testing the other food groups, but I have one question I am hoping someone can answer (searched the forums, but couldn't find anything).  In talking to a coworker that knows about my Whole30 journey, they mentioned that not eating dairy for 30 days had the result of "killing off" some of the natural enzymes in the digestive tract that would normally handle dairy and thinks it is why I reacted badly to it.  I don't agree, but it sounded logical enough that I thought I would come here and ask anyway.  Thanks!

It sounds logical that bacteria that works on dairy might go hungry and die off over 30 days, but I am not sure that is true. For example, the first time I ate ice cream after having done the Whole30 for about 120 days, I had diarrhea. Then I did not eat dairy again for several more months. The next time I ate ice cream, I had no problems at all. None. And no problems the time after that. I have been eating Whole30-style 4 years now. I often go for months at a time without consuming dairy and then I eat some again. I keep wondering why I have not had GI problems like I did that first time. It can't be that the bacteria is absent because I should have a problem every time if that is so. So I don't know the science, but my experience says the concept your coworker proposes is not accurate.

  • 1 month later...

My husband and I have 2 more days of our first Whole30. Reintro is approaching & we have some questions:

• If we introduce 3 different dairies the first day, and we have a reaction, how do we determine which of the 3 foods are the problem?

• If one of our dairies is ice cream, does it have to be plain? For example: if we have chocolate chip, is that a 'no no', since this would have more than one possible triggers?

• And finally: is it okay to take a time for reintro & then beginning again with our next Whole30.

I know for a fact that I need to do more than 30 days, but would like a small break, if possible.

Thanks for any help!

Regarding your first question, if that situation occurs, then my recommendation would be to retest different types of dairy separately, so you can pinpoint the cause.

I would choose an ice cream other than chocolate chip: too many variables. Or maybe skip ice cream as a reintro test food altogether.

And yes, you can go through the reintro protocol and start another Whole30.
