greenlily
I started the whole30 on May 18, just after I read the book. I've been doing great, no longer have heartburn every day ... almost o days, unless I eat cucmbers. But still feeling tired often. And lost about 5 lbs with no hunger or real cravings inbetween meals. I should say that I have pretty much stayed away from sugar and gluten for quite awhile before I even started the whole30 but had no weight loss results. I have been going back to the book for reference and I found the chapter in the back referring to special poulations. I have hypothyroid and for 20 yrs have been taking thyroid meds. No one has ever told me I had Hashimoto so I guess its just Hypothyroid. I was not aware Hashi was an autoimmune disease until my sister got it. I also hve a mild case of Psoriosis which is also an autoimmune disease. Anyway, after reading the special populations info and seeing that I should be eliminating more foods than I thought, (especially the spices which I use a lot!) Should I start over? How should I handle this? I have been looking forward to the day that I can start adding foods and now I find I shouldn't be having those spices. I didn't eat peppers or tomatoes and eggplant because they aggravate arthritis. Any thoughts...
Moderators LadyM Posted June 15, 2014 Moderators Share Posted June 15, 2014 I say if you want to push further with your eliminations to see if it further helps, by all means go ahead. But what you've already done for yourself is stupendously positive. Don't for a minute second guess the progress you've already made. And it might just be that continuing longer than 30 days with the straight w30 helps significantly. If you're not in the right headspace for further restriction, don't do it. missmary
No one has ever told me I had Hashimoto so I guess its just Hypothyroid. I would not assume this. Many doctors do not do enough testing to know if it is hashimoto's or regular hypothyroid. Hashi's is far more common, actually, and with the other autoimmune issues you describe, I would take the possibility pretty seriously. Ask your doctor to run a full thyroid panel including antibodies, and you will have a better idea. On the special populations info: if the whole30 is working for you, you don't necessarily need to add the AIP restrictions. If you don't feel your concerns are resolved, you could give that a try for 30 days and see if it makes a difference. For some people, the restrictions of the whole30 alone (without AIP) are enough, although sometimes it takes more than 30 days.
