Dinner at a friends house- how to handle

We have been invited over to a small group dinner at a friend's house Friday night.  4 couples total including the homeowner.  It is all my husbands co-workers but also friends.  The hostess asked if we have any allergies, etc and said they are planning to grill out.  I feel bad asking her to accomodate me.  She is nice enough to have us over.  We normally drink quite a bit with this group but I am good with passing on that.  The hostess is pregnant so she will be sipping water with me:)

How would you handle this situation?  I am tempted to eat before and then I can supplement with any compliant food at her house.  Hmmm!  Want to be gracious and not demanding but also stay on plan.  Thoughts??

She has already said for us to not bring any other food but I could push back on that and bring a compliant side dish.  I am thinking most anything grilled with a compliant side dish could work??

Thanks!  (and this will be my first social outing on my first Whole 30!)

For grilled food, you would need to watch out for marinades or seasonings, which are suspect for ingredients like gluten , soy, sugar and non-compliant oils.

Since the hostess opened the door. I would absolutely discuss your current situation (say you're on an elimination diet to test for food sensitivities). It will likely be relatively easy to arrange for your food to be grilled in a compliant way.

Just say you're doing an elimination diet at the moment that excludes XYZ, but you don't want her to stress about it so you'll bring a dish that you know you can eat. That plus non-marinated meat would be fine.
