Sausages - What makes a sausage Whole30 compliant?

I am only on Day 1 and at the weekend I am going to a family event where sausages are being served. I have suggested I bring a couple of my own to be cooked. I am about to go to my local specialised butcher. I assume I need to ask for a sausage that is sugar and gluten free. I shall also ask if the pigs are raised outside. Is there anything else I need to ask?

you are on the right track. Whole30 compliant sausage is sausage that does not contain any "off-plan" ingredients. That includes sugar, gluten/wheat, soy, dairy and sulfites (those are the ones most likely to be found in sausage).

Although sausages made from pastured pigs would be recommended over those from conventionally farmed pigs, you can eat conventionally farmed meat and remain whole30 compliant.

sausages are kinda tricky though - i still havent found a compliant version! You might be best off making you're own? Or taking burgers/chicken drumsticks instead if its for a bbq

I have not looked in a while, but I have found compliant bratwurst and chorizo in the meat case at Whole Foods. I have never found compliant sausage in an ordinary grocery store.

Making your own sausage is easy. Just mix spices into plain ground pork. I use salt, sage, garlic powder, and cayenne chili powder. I don't measure spices; I just use what seems right at the time and then live with it.

Aidells (from local groceries) has a compliant chicken apple sausage.  Also, if you are looking more for a hot dog type thing, try applegate organic beef stadium dogs.

My local butcher makes lots of different types of compliant sausages.  (brats, chorizo, and more I can't put a name to right this second).  I also buy ground pork and use the Italian sausage seasoning from theclothesmakethegirl.com to make sausage patties.

Is this only for the sausage that in a casing and sold in packs?  I get some sausage from a local farm, but it's just ground meat, it's not packaged in a casing or anything.  I never thought twice about it.  Is ground sausage usually with added chemicals like the brat kinds?

If it's ground meat with spices from a local farm, the main thing I would ask about would be sugar. I'm pretty sure my farm sausage has sugar in it (I know their brats and sausage links do), but it would otherwise be compliant.

Thanks all. I would like to have a go at making my own sausages, just wouldn't be able to before Sunday when I need them. The butcher was great. He makes the sausages there and there is a Whole30 compliant one. He also said that given enough warning he can make me whatever I'd like.

I almost tripped up with the burgers though. Bought some for tea for the whole family and thought I gone through all the same questions. However, they are not made on site and he needed check about the sugar. When I phoned up later and we went through the ingredients I'd got ones with wheat flour in.

Sorry to barge in on this post but didn't want to start a new thread.  Anyway, I'd like to make my own sausage and finally found ground pork but it has the following ingredients and I'm not sure they are approved.  They are as follows: potassium lactate, sodium phosphates, and sodium diacetate.  I have searched through the forum under those names and nothing comes up.  Any advice would be helpful.  Thanks!

I buy casual gourmet brand from Costco. It's the roasted red pepper and spinach chicken sausage. Ingredients are: chicken, roasted red pepper, spinach, chicken broth, salt, spices, paprika, celery powder, and granulated garlic, in a beef collagen casing. I despise pork so my sausage options were severely limited.

I'm pretty sure that's all whole30 compliant. (Feel free to tell me if it's not somehow, as I has just reset 2 days ago by sneaky peanuts)
