Could nursing baby get sick from initial detox period?

Recommended Posts

Hi -

I recently started the whole30 program and on day 4 my 15 month old started vomiting immediately after nursing sessions. He also has had diarrhea since that day resulting in a terrible diaper rash. Day 4 also happens to be the first day I felt extremely foggy, hungover and out of it (likely due to withdrawal symptoms). I'm just wondering if my son is getting toxins through my milk, which are causing him to get sick. Anyone have experience with this?

Did you add in any foods that you haven't had before (or since giving birth)? If so, he could be sensitive to what you're eating. Try cutting out anything that you've recently and it might help.

Also, instead of starting cold turkey, since you are supporting a little one, you could maybe do a reverse reintro into a W30 so that, instead of dropping everything and causing yourself to detox, you can do it a bit at a time to avoid causing your little one discomfort. So go back to how you were eating, and then for a week or so cut out dairy, then cut out gluten, then cut out sugar, etc. until all of the W30-forbidden food groups are out and you start your 'Whole 30.' It might be a little less drastic for baby!

Good luck!

I am no expert on breast feeding, but your body does not suddenly begin releasing toxins when you begin to eat "clean." Not eating easy sugar sources makes people feel foggy and experience a variety of uncomfortable symptoms until their bodies adjust to burning fat and protein as its main fuel source and for reasons that do not make sense to me, people worry that they are suffering from the release of toxins. So you can forget about worrying that your baby is exposed to toxins because you are eating veggies, fruit, and meat.

Your baby's symptoms have a good chance of NOT being related to your change in eating and you should probably check with your doctor about his symptoms. That said, MrsStick makes a good point that there may be a problem if you have begun to eat something that you are sensitive to, so it is useful to evaluate totally new foods in your diet.

Tom, I worry about detoxing and it affecting my milk because I am eating so clean that I thought my body might detox. Perhaps I am mistaking my symptoms for detox. Are you saying that simply eating clean cannot possibly cause a body to detox? I'm not being argumentative; I am truly trying to figure this out. Thanks so much for your help.
