abbeysmith
Went to a restaurant last night and I got a salad with grilled steak and red peppers and chopped onions and tomatoes and avocado. Nothing else on it. Clearly something in the salad was not program because I feel awful today. My stomach is upset and rumbly yuck and I'm sure it was that meal, I've felt great since day one. I don't know what was off program in that meal, I didn't intentionally go off program, but I know that if you slip you're supposed to start over. Does that mean I ought to start over? If I had to guess it would be that the meat wasn't actually grilled. Thinking about it now it definitely had that curled and stuck together look of meat cooked in a pan...drat!! I've been doing so well!!!!!

Jessmarie84
I have a related question. Today is day 5, and last night the hubby and I were in a hurry for dinner and had a roasted chicken (the kind you get near the front of the grocery store) with fresh veggies cooked in olive oil. It wasn't organic, but I sacrificed that in a pinch as I figured that sticking to meat/whole protein over processed foods was the priority. I looked at the ingredients and it was all real and approved, except that it included brown sugar. I was assuming that any sugar would be in the skin seasoning, so I just didn't eat the skin. However, last night I couldn't settle down, mind racing, and it took hours to really get to sleep. Would enough sugar really have made it into the meat itself (which tasted totally fresh and normal) to make a difference? If so, do I need to start over? On another note, I haven't noticed any changes at all up to now. It's hard to pass up dessert in the evening but I've successfully navigated those little cravings and stuck to the plan (no "paleo" cheats). I know it's different for everyone and I don't mean to complain about feeling good, but I'm worried that I'm doing something wrong. Energy is the same as always (not great, but not groggy), digestion hasn't changed (still get occasional constipation but otherwise fine), weight/size hasn't changed, no headaches, not peeing more than usual as many people report. Aside from the possible slip last night, I've followed the plan to the letter. Could it really be taking a full week for any symptoms or changes to occur? Jessmarie84
As an addendum to the above, I did read the mentioned article (which is great, so thank you) and I interpret it to say that because the incident was an accident and a learning experience and only involved added sugar (not grains or dairy), it's ok to proceed from here. The reason I wanted to post the question is that if skipping the skin did mean skipping the sugar, I have no idea why I couldn't sleep and that concerns me too. Unless that's one of the less-common whole30 side effects that I just haven't heard about?
Moderators ultrarunnergirl Posted August 11, 2014 Moderators Share Posted August 11, 2014 abbeysmith - Did you ask the server explicit questions about your meal, or just take the menu at face value? I had a similar experience. I listed all the things I could not have and asked the server to check with the chef on which dishes might be ok for me as is, or with the least amount of effort for the kitchen. Only because I went to the trouble to enlist her help did I find out the steak entree was perfect, but had I chosen the steak salad, I'd have gotten a steak marinated in soy (not listed on the menu description). Jessmarie84 - Since you don't know if the sugar listed was a rub or a marinade, it's hard to say about the skin/meat. I definitely had trouble with my hearth racing after evening sugar intake.
