ollie
Good morning, fellow Whole30ers! I've decided not to wait until Monday and start today - on August 8th Is there anyone else diving into the new life just before the weekend? Let's stay strong against the sugar cravings together I'm based in London, so I'm a little bit ahead in time and already had my breakfast - 2 fried eggs with 2 tomatoes and 1/2 avocado. The biggest change so far for me - milkless coffee (farewell, latte's!). How is your journey starting?
Stellaw30
Hi! I am starting today as well! I live in North Carolina. Definitely need help battling cravings, especially when I am stressed...which is a lot! I have found light coconut milk to be okay in my coffee! ollie
Hi, Toler0719! Feels great to know I'm not alone Thank you for the milk advice - I'll definitely give it a try on the weekend!
k_chaps29
Hi! I just started as well! It's been easy for me so far, but I am with you on the milk less coffee. I've been putting coconut oil in it for a little more flavor, and it makes your lips so moist as well! Good luck!!
Mickimc
Hi Ladies, I started yesterday . Like you Ollie, I was going to wait until the weekend and decided 'why wait'. I am a huge sugar addict, and happy to say I am not experiencing a headache yet. Just eating breakfast is my biggest challenge. I never had an early day appetite. But second thing is yes ... The lattes. Up to now, Always used lots of milk in my coffee. I have the approved coconut milk, it's ok. Will try oil tomorrow. Thanks for suggestion. Yesterday I made the slow cooker Italian pork roast from clothes make the girl, or well fed website and WOW yummy. Think it helped the husband lose some worry over what he would eat during this period. He's not in for the program now. It's football season. Nice to have you out there! Lflowers
Good Morning, Hi everyone!!! I am starting today!!! Yah ME!!! I have a HUGE sweet tooth, cravings, and I love creamer in my coffee. For years, I have battled with hormonal acne and my physician advised me to change my diet. I started cutting sugar and diary. I use mostly almond milk now and organic coconut sugar. But since I have read WHOLE 30 I see why I can't out workout a bad diet and the way food has affected my acne. Looking forward to learning new ideas from everyone and for the encouragement as well. I have already gained something new (coconut milk) for my coffee. Good Luck Everyone! Latarsha, North Carolina
blujett8
I started today as well & so far, black coffee has been the biggest change - not too bad though ! Excited to get things going - good to see everyone here
ollie
Looks like we all have not one, but two addictions - for sugar and for coffee - in common
Mickimc
On my day 2 here. Got pretty nauseous after breakfast - much like a hangover but no headache. I haven't eaten breakfast since I was 10, so it's a big shift. Ginger tea helped a bit. Feeling better this afternoon. All I was thinking when I felt so bad was This. Is. Hard. ha! You'll understand that if you read It starts with Food. Hoping you are all doing well in the first day! It's kind of fun finding all these new recipes. Trying Best Ever Chicken tonight. nycemily
I'm starting tomorrow (August 9th) so I figured I'd jump on here as well. This is my first Whole30 so I'm a little nervous but also really excited to (hopefully) start feeling better (read: not exhausted and cranky all the time). I'm aiming for better mental clarity, fewer mood swings, more energy, and it would be nice to lose a couple inches I think it'll be great to have other people to turn to who know what I'm going through and can help keep me accountable! I promise to do the same in return. I just got back from the grocery store (my wallet's not very happy but I think it will be worth it); this weekend I'm going to make a frittata, chicken with 40 cloves of garlic, and balsamic braised short ribs (from Practical Paleo). What's everybody cooking this weekend? Good luck! Emily
Mickimc
Hi Emily, Welcome to the group. I'm at the end of day 2. I'm more scared than excited, but know I gotta get off of the sugar. Just had that hungover feeling for half of today as described, and also nauseous after breakfast. But I never ate breakfast before so I guess that's how it is. I made an incredible crock pot Italian pork roast, and best ever chicken, both from here: http://theclothesmakethegirl.com/2013/12/29/whole30-2014-week-1-meal-plan/ I like that there is so much to choose from on her site. I plan to make salmon sweet potato cakes if I can find almond meal or flour at my whole foods store. And I also want to make the zucchini ginger soup. Thought the ginger might help settle my stomach at breakfast. Let us know how your recipes come out! Happy getting healthy, Micki
ollie
Good morning, ladies! How has your day 1/2 finished? I've been out for dinner with friends and managed to avoid the temptation of having a glass of wine, and also made some healthy menu choices. My trick was to go for a few hot starters. Eating out/socializing previously seemed to be the hardest part of any diet to me - yesterday was surprisingly easy (that's day 1 thrill talking, probably ). Everyone's cooking plans for the weekend look absolutely delicious - please, share more recipe links! With food like this waiting for you in the fridge, Whole30 will be nothing less than a feast I rarely do meal prep or cook for the week, but I hope that your example will inspire me to spend some time in the kitchen tomorrow - one of my personal goals was to start bringing packed lunch to work. What are your main goals for the programme? Happy day 1/2/3,ollie
Rocko25
Hey everyone! Like all of you, I started yesterday too in the hopes of improving my energy and get back into control of my eating. I did one almost a full year ago and I felt great at the end, but then school/life/work got in the way and I started eating not so good foods. I am more of a snack food addict (anything salty and crunchy) so I'm hoping to get away from that this month. Yesterday went fairly well- I was compliant all day but I found myself craving peanut butter by the end of the day. I'm not quite sure where that craving came from, but its a sign that it's going to be an interesting whole30.
blujett8
hey everyone day 1 was surprisingly easy & it feels wonderful to have the weekend ahead to get a a handle on things. I actually crashed last night about an hour before my usual bedtime. it felt amazing. could definitely use more of the deep rest. My goal for the weekend is to get a few staples down. I get off track when food feels inconvenient & especially for the start of this process, when my blood sugar is still wonky - can't have delay or the need for too much deliberation ! Working on: omelette varieties Bulletproof coffee ( coffee w. butter) Various salad options to have on hand. I'm thinking that salad with some kind of meat will be my dinner for the upcoming work week stay strong & inspired, everyone ! Heather
ollie
Heather, I tried a new omelette recipe this morning - using a little bit of water instead of milk/cream. Tasted even better than dairy version! You might want to try that while you're experimenting
Mickimc
I need to buy some salad items, too. Heather, what will you have as a protein with them? I made the approved mayo, followed directions exactly (room temp egg and lemon juice), but it failed. I used it snyway to make coleslaw, which came out good but I missed the sweet side. So I had fresh cherries on the table.. What the heck! Chopped some up just a fee and put them in and YUM. Best ever chicken was delicious too. Happy day 2/3 to all. blujett8
Micki do you know what went wrong with your mayo ? I had mine fail once b/c I added the oil too fast.... salad protein ideas for the weekend : Paleo Nicoise - tuna & hard boiled eggs are so easy to keep on hand & I'm a real caper lover Ginger beef w. Mango Salsa Likely I'll simplify the marinade a bit Ginger, mango & lime are to die for! Making a double for next day eating- usually not a big left-overs person, but this one has worked out well for me in the past. Have a fun weekend Everyone ! Mickimc
You might be right Heather, I did it slow but maybe not slow enough. Will try again tomorrow. just had a huge green salad with fried salmon for lunch. Just loving the flavor of coconut oil over olive oil. The label made me chuckle... Used for skin and hair treatments too! Thx for recipes!
nycemily
Micki, I read that when you're making mayo if you add a teaspoon of water to the egg yolk before you start adding the oil it helps keep the mayonnaise from breaking -- I just made mayo for the first time and that worked great for me (my hand still hurts from whisking, though!). Worth a try! It's only day one and I already got thrown a curveball -- I had planned to cook for a friend but now we're going out to dinner instead. It looks like the restaurant has a couple of simply grilled fish dishes so I think I'll go with one of those with a side of steamed vegetables and just ask lots of pesky questions If that fails I guess I can just get sashimi and bring my own coconut aminos -- that's probably the safest bet. Hope everyone is having a good weekend! Emily
Mickimc
Thanks Emily! Will try that tomorrow. I used a blender, I think I'll try hand whisking too. Good luck on dinner out! Sounds like a good plan. I turned down a bonfire tonite... S'mores being served, and I need to get a little stronger before I face those.
ollie
Micki, I've cooked slow cooked pork from the link you posted - turned out amazing, even though I'm new to crock pot cooking. Thank you for sharing! I was so curious about the outcome that I ended up having pork for breakfast (there's a first time for everything, right?). How are you holding up against the weekend temptations? I've had a watch a friend eating a cake and another on munched on a pack of crisps just in front of me And then I woke up this morning craving for some shortbread with my coffee - and I'm not even a huge fan of shortbread. I keep repeating to myself that 2 minutes of pleasure are NOT worth having to start all over again! This argument will become even stronger as the days of whole-eating will go by I also have stocked on apples just in case. Also - is anyone keeping a log of their meals? Stay strong and positive, Ollie
Mickimc
Yes, me too, I ate pork yesterday and today... Eggs make me feel sick in the am. It's amazing how well that turns out. I've never been very good at cooking tender roasts...now I am . I did not keep a food log, but have instagrammed a few meals because they are soooo good lookin. Cravings not too bad but the husband is not on board so listening to him crunch and watching him snack is tough. Then I ask...could I eat chicken and Brussel sprouts right now so I recognize it as a craving . I've asked him not to snack in front of me. S'mores would do me in so just avoiding that scene. Highly recommend the silky zucchini ginger soup... Scrumptious! http://theclothesmakethegirl.com/2012/11/05/silky-gingered-zucchini-soup/ FYI A close friend is on week 6 and she's lost 15 pounds. Started at 145 and She is about to go down I to the 120's first time in 20 years. My main reason for signing up is joint pain... But I'll gladly take some weight loss. that helps motivate! menyala
Hi Ollie and everyone. I'm in London, too, and my boyfriend and I have started today... but we've kind of eased ourselves in by cutting out the vast majority of grains and dairy for the last couple of weeks already. We had a party to attend yesterday and decided to start after the party, so here we are - DAY 1. Ollie - I'm particularly interested what you might have during the Whole30 if out and about in London. Let me know as we go along... I'll do the same. Also, if you're missing milk in your coffee try Alpro Unsweetened Almond Milk. You can get in from bigger Tescos and Sainsburys. I've been a die hard milk drinker all my life, but have now switched to almond milk and am pleasantly surprised. I even drank it on its own just as a little "sweet" treat although it wasn't actually sweet. But make sure it's the "unsweetend" one, not the "original" one which has added sugars. What's everyone having for breakfast Monday morning? Good luck to you all!
Mickimc
Welcome mentyala, We don't have Aalpro brand, darn! All of our almond milks I have found so far contain carrageenan which is bad for the bod; evidently cancer causing. I finally am just putting in coconut oil. Will check amazon to see if I can order Alpro from there. Tomorrow am is the zucchini soup mentioned above, and I am adding in half cup of cooked ground turkey, with a side of avacodo. I am struggling with breakfast because I haven't eaten it since age of 10. Part liquid is working better for me. Very cool that your partner is in with you! Hearing my husband munch on tortilla chips is painful. So far, just seeing the forbidden foods isn't breaking me down. But smelling and hearing a crunch is tough. Hope your day is great! ollie
Hi, menyala! Good luck on your 1st day! It's great to have someone local here to share the shopping and eating out tips I've eaten out in Del Aziz on Friday (that was my day 1) - I'd rate W30 appropriate food choice as 2 out of 5 - not hopeless, but very limited. I ended up having two hot starters (baba ganoush and lamb meatballs). Apart from that, there are steak and burger (which you could get w/o bun) - but that's about it, they offer couscous as a side for all mains, serve a lot of pasta and put hummus/yogurt in everything else.Yesterday, I've been to Tibits for lunch (close to Picadilly Circus). I really like their veggie selection and the fact that they are self-service, though, being a vegetarian place, they only had one meat option - which I went for nevertheless. They also do veggie juices and smoothies that I now value as a desert 3.5 out of 5 for the choice. My back-up plan for workdays when I won't bring a packed lunch (and there will some like these...) will be Nando's and their salads - I like Mediterranean (w/o feta cheese) and Avocado ones. As to breakfasts, my usual foolproof combo is eggs (fried or milkless omelette, shakshuka on weekends) + tomatoes + avocado.
