Had sashimi for dinner tonight and was STARVING!! Ok not actually starving but HUNGRY. 

Not enough fat! 

Was driving home kinda distracted and thinking sadly about Joan Rivers and idly passed ....a cop car.

With my expired registration that I sent out last week.

Immediately was like damn, that's a cop. And I'm on the LAM!

Yep, lights camera action, pulled over. 

Grateful I haven't had a drink since November!

I was like oh well. My fault for sitting on the reg for a month. It is what it is. 

When the cop came back with my license he said "you're a Capricorn?"

I was like uh, yeah. He goes "ok, just get your registration asap"

CC - congrats on all of your success. Best of luck with your upcoming triathlon and bike-for-booze ride.

 

Deb - you girls make me sick with all of the batting of eyes, boohooing...showing of boobs to get out of a ticket. If I lift my shirt up to an officer he usually just gets mad. My wife has become the queen of getting out of tickets over the years. I'm glad it worked out for you.

 

I'm taking off today....because work is dumb! Going to help a buddy out and then make some decoys. Probably make some breakfast-in-bed for the wife so she can enjoy my time off too!

 

Today is "clean the refrigerator day" and go for a long walk day!

Good Job Deb (and Kelly too). Dave, how did you know my refrig was that bad? Deb, those recipes today are OFF THE CHARTS. Their Caulirice looks amazeballs, can't wait to try that (and I can use my fish sauce, wahoo). The General Tao's chicken looks amazing but very tedious.

 

okay, it's Friday, the kids are back in school and life is looking good. I'm looking forward to our "Jet to Jetty" to raise funds for mental health services for people who can't afford them.

I thought today was "clean the car day" .....  is this an "either" or an "and"?    On the other hand I still eat in my car way too often so maybe it is the same thing. 

 

Some morning observations:

 

-  I was thirsty this morning when I woke up.  I drank water.  I went to the bathroom.  I came downstairs and made coffee.  I logged into the forum.   And then, and only then, did I think about the hidden scale!!!    That is almost 10 min and I am counting it as a success ... out of sight out of mind. 

 

- I realize that i have not written in my Whole30 food log for days.  Part is because of time-  I would rather spend time here on this thread then alone in my log!  But part is about being so comfortable with the template and program that it is just normal.    And part of it is about working on things other than food ... relationships...  community..  one word...    yeah Whole30 is certainly not jut about food.   

 

- My son (17) focuses on dairy and protein shakes as a way to get additional protein after workouts.  Last night he was downing glass after glass of milk and I couldn't help but say something (yep I am compelled to  'encourage' him too).    Well I should have just been silent because he was miserable and nature took its course around 11:30 --   all the milk  and more came back up.    He then was "starving"  so I made him scrambled eggs and sweet potatoes I already had roasted....  and he felt much better.   This set the stage for a great conversation about food etc.    I would have preferred this conversation not be at midnight but I will take what I can get! 

 

Who is Kelly?  Kelly I am not sure we have met but hello friend!!

Kelly is Dave's darling and persevering wife who loves Dave almost as much as we all do. She's getting breakfast IN BED!...and that's all I have to say about that!

 

Lynn, good job on the scale and the 17-year-old. My kids have started really leaning toward the food I make for myself in the frig, which is good, but sadly leads to more cooking and we all know how I feel about that. Luckily, I'm happy today as I have my lettuce wraps which always are easy...add a little hot wing sauce and I am good to go!

My AWARE moment this morning.... before the scale disappeared I would not even take a drink of water before I would weigh myself! This morning I was thirsty waking up and by habit almost stopped myself from taking a drink...... and then I happily drank a whole glass sitting on my nightstand before I even stood up. And I thought my habit of weighing myself was no big deal!

I'm right there with you! No water PLUS must pee first (sorry for the toilet topic, Meadow :-) ). Not weighing every morning also left me a bit confused about how I was feeling in the morning ... Is it a "good" day, or a "bad" day. Sad, eh?

No more! I'm into the second half of a planned W60 and will weigh on Day 60 and not before.

CC and Joni, buy liquid coconut oil that doesn't separate. It works great on your dog's teeth, too.

I've been using on my teeth, it makes them white and no harm. I use Nature's Way Liquid Coconut Oil. They have it at Walgreens on the right side of the vities...far right. Aren't all of their stores alike? It mixes with anything.

MeadowLily, what do you mix the oil with (if anything), for your teeth? I'm curious, because for some odd reason, when I started my W30 I totally lost my taste for coffee. This was a HUGE surprise, because I've been drinking four to six cups of black coffee between 6:00am and 10:00am every day for years and years. Very odd.

Anyway, now that I'm not drinking coffee, my teeth are getting a little bit whiter and I've been thinking about helping them a little, but am reluctant to use bleach.

Here's the whole article from the NYTimes. I'll take it down in a few days (copyright issues), but wanted all to have a chance to read it. I love that more and more science is being done, and it supports the info already written, with scientific studies cited, in "It Starts With Food." Maybe, just maybe, more doctors and patients will get the new info and start on this healthier path.

A Call for a Low-Carb Diet That Embraces Fat

By ANAHAD O’CONNOR

SEPTEMBER 1, 2014

People who avoid carbohydrates and eat more fat, even saturated fat, lose more body fat and have fewer cardiovascular risks than people who follow the low-fat diet that health authorities have favored for decades, a major new study shows.

The findings are unlikely to be the final salvo in what has been a long and often contentious debate about what foods are best to eat for weight loss and overall health. The notion that dietary fat is harmful, particularly saturated fat, arose decades ago from comparisons of disease rates among large national populations.

But more recent clinical studies in which individuals and their diets were assessed over time have produced a more complex picture. Some have provided strong evidence that people can sharply reduce their heart disease risk by eating fewer carbohydrates and more dietary fat, with the exception of trans fats. The new findings suggest that this strategy more effectively reduces body fat and also lowers overall weight.

The new study was financed by the National Institutes of Health and published in the Annals of Internal Medicine. It included a racially diverse group of 150 men and women — a rarity in clinical nutrition studies — who were assigned to follow diets for one year that limited either the amount of carbs or fat that they could eat, but not overall calories.

“To my knowledge, this is one of the first long-term trials that’s given these diets without calorie restrictions,” said Dariush Mozaffarian, the dean of the Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy at Tufts University, who was not involved in the new study. “It shows that in a free-living setting, cutting your carbs helps you lose weight without focusing on calories. And that’s really important because someone can change what they eat more easily than trying to cut down on their calories.”

Diets low in carbohydrates and higher in fat and protein have been commonly used for weight loss since Dr. Robert Atkins popularized the approach in the 1970s. Among the longstanding criticisms is that these diets cause people to lose weight in the form of water instead of body fat, and that cholesterol and other heart disease risk factors climb because dieters invariably raise their intake of saturated fat by eating more meat and dairy.

Many nutritionists and health authorities have “actively advised against” low-carbohydrate diets, said the lead author of the new study, Dr. Lydia A. Bazzano of the Tulane University School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine. “It’s been thought that your saturated fat is, of course, going to increase, and then your cholesterol is going to go up,” she said. “And then bad things will happen in general.”

The new study showed that was not the case.

By the end of the yearlong trial, people in the low-carbohydrate group had lost about eight pounds more on average than those in the low-fat group. They had significantly greater reductions in body fat than the low-fat group, and improvements in lean muscle mass — even though neither group changed their levels of physical activity.

While the low-fat group did lose weight, they appeared to lose more muscle than fat.

“They actually lost lean muscle mass, which is a bad thing,” Dr. Mozaffarian said. “Your balance of lean mass versus fat mass is much more important than weight. And that’s a very important finding that shows why the low-carb, high-fat group did so metabolically well.”

The high-fat group followed something of a modified Atkins diet. They were told to eat mostly protein and fat, and to choose foods with primarily unsaturated fats, like fish, olive oil and nuts. But they were allowed to eat foods higher in saturated fat as well, including cheese and red meat.

A typical day’s diet was not onerous: It might consist of eggs for breakfast, tuna salad for lunch, and some kind of protein for dinner — like red meat, chicken, fish, pork or tofu — along with vegetables. Low-carb participants were encouraged to cook with olive and canola oils, but butter was allowed, too.

Over all, they took in a little more than 13 percent of their daily calories from saturated fat, more than double the 5 to 6 percent limit recommended by the American Heart Association. The majority of their fat intake, however, was unsaturated fats.

The low-fat group included more grains, cereals and starches in their diet. They reduced their total fat intake to less than 30 percent of their daily calories, which is in line with the federal government’s dietary guidelines. The other group increased their total fat intake to more than 40 percent of daily calories.

Both groups were encouraged to eat vegetables, and the low-carbohydrate group was told that eating some beans and fresh fruit was fine as well.

In the end, people in the low-carbohydrate group saw markers of inflammation and triglycerides — a type of fat that circulates in the blood — plunge. Their HDL, the so-called good cholesterol, rose more sharply than it did for people in the low-fat group.

Blood pressure, total cholesterol and LDL, the so-called bad cholesterol, stayed about the same for people in each group.

Nonetheless, those on the low-carbohydrate diet ultimately did so well that they managed to lower their Framingham risk scores, which calculate the likelihood of a heart attack within the next 10 years. The low-fat group on average had no improvement in their scores.

The decrease in risk on the low-carbohydrate diet “should translate into a substantial benefit,” said Dr. Allan Sniderman, a professor of cardiology at McGill University in Montreal.

One important predictor of heart disease that the study did not assess, Dr. Sniderman said, was the relative size and number of LDL particles in the bloodstream. Two people can have the same overall LDL concentration, but very different levels of risk depending on whether they have a lot of small, dense LDL particles or a small number of large and fluffy particles.

Eating refined carbohydrates tends to raise the overall number of LDL particles and shift them toward the small, dense variety, which contributes to atherosclerosis. Saturated fat tends to make LDL particles larger, more buoyant and less likely to clog arteries, at least when carbohydrate intake is not high, said Dr. Ronald M. Krauss, the former chairman of the American Heart Association’s dietary guidelines committee.

Small, dense LDL is the kind typically found in heart patients and in people who have high triglycerides, central obesity and other aspects of the so-called metabolic syndrome, said Dr. Krauss, who is also the director of atherosclerosis research at Children’s Hospital Oakland Research Institute.

“I’ve been a strong advocate of moving saturated fat down the list of priorities in dietary recommendations for one reason: because of the increasing importance of metabolic syndrome and the role that carbohydrates play,” Dr. Krauss said.

Dr. Mozaffarian said the research suggested that health authorities should pivot away from fat restrictions and encourage people to eat fewer processed foods, particularly those with refined carbohydrates.

The average person may not pay much attention to the federal dietary guidelines, but their influence can be seen, for example, in school lunch programs, which is why many schools forbid whole milk but serve their students fat-free chocolate milk loaded with sugar, Dr. Mozaffarian said.

Sorry to have been absent for so many days. No, I did NOT fall face first into a box of donuts on Day 31! I'm not sure why I wasn't on this forum, but I'm pretty sure I was in some sort of time warp, or fell into a wormhole, or ... I don't know.

Anyway, on the "exercise" assignment, I worked in the yard one day, cutting down many, many tree limbs and putting them out for yard-waste pickup day. The next day, I recovered from working in the yard and cutting down tree limbs.

I am also instituting the Take 5 idea shared by... uh-oh, not sure who. I'll look back and give proper credit. It seems very do-able and sensible. Plus, I sit in a chair at work all day, so I need a reminder to get up and MOVE several times each day.

On the "do something for someone else" day, I sent some fun books to a good friend, and she doesn't know they are coming, so it will be a delayed surprise.

Ah - one other thought - actually a request for help....

I am traveling with my 22 year old daughter this weekend for a baby shower. I would very much like to share Whole30 with her , but she and I have a bit of an tense relationship when it comes to me "encouraging" her to make healthier choices (I call it encouraging, she call is something different). I have tried things like talking about how much I love my trainer... and offering to pay for one for her if she is interested... but nothing has inspired her.

I haven't told her anything about my Whole 30 .... but I will be showing up with a cooler full of compliant food to make it through the weekend... and I have lost a noticeable amount of weight since she saw me end of July... and we will have 4 hours each way in a car together, where i am going to be very tempted to "encourage"

Any ideas on how to play this?

Hi, Lynne.

My experience with "encouraging" friends and family: it is never a good idea unless they specifically ask for my opinion, or want to hear my experience.

Letting your daughter know that you've brought food because you are currently eliminating some types of food in an effort to find out which foods might be less than healthy for you, is about as far as I would go.

I might leave the book ("It Starts With Food") lying around, but would definitely NOT give it to her, send it to her, or talk about it unless she has specific questions. I would try to start sentences with "I," never "you," and would talk only about my actual experience, not my theories or any suggestions for her.

So, that's my two cents' worth... hope to hear that you had an excellent time on your trip!

MeadowLily: 100% percent perfect answer. Yes, this...

Mothers and daughters can be very touchy. Lead by example and I wouldn't make a production out of your cooler or weight loss. You're not in competition with your daughter and vice versa. This is the touchy part I'm talking about.

Competition. Nip that in the bud. No lectures, no looking each other up and down, no giving each other a pinch with back-handed compliments. None of the above.

Love the stuffin' out of her and forget about bopping her over the head with your newfound WD30 excitement.

Don't encourage her with anything "diet related". Don't go there.

Remember, this isn't a diet. We're not supposed to be talking about the scales and how much weight we're going to lose by Halloween. We're not dialing it down and competing with each other. We're not tightening the screws and throwing it into our loved ones faces.

No my friends, STAY Compliant but ACT Humble. Even if you have to pinch yourself, refrain from telling your relatives how great you're doing. They won't want you hanging around and you won't get invited to their get togethers. We can't make them feel guilty. We'll never win anyone over like that. Stay Sweet, my friends.

CC, congratulations on the W90! I love what you said about no longer identifying as a compulsive overeater... just perfect. That's how i FINALLY quit smoking years ago; I decided that I was NOT a smoker trying to quit, I was, instead, simply a non-smoker. I watched what other non-smokers did, and copied. The main thing, of course, is that non-smokers don't smoke!

Well folks, today is Whole 90 for me. Lots to reflect on.

The last few weeks of busyness and travel have really impacted me. I've been under vegged, and as result have compensated with "over fruit." I've said before I'm not beating myself up about fruit, but I do notice how much fuller I feel when I'm appropriately vegged. So this morning, I really went back to the template and I'm shocked (but shouldn't be) how much fuller I feel. Planning, planning, planning!

I lost another 4 lbs for a total of 24, and also I've lost about 20 inches. That's crazy, no? This month I lost more inches than lbs, which is ok with me!

The morning I was hanging out with a bunch of gal friends - reconvening after the summer hiatus - and got so many compliments. It was so nice! I did share with them about my weight struggles and how I finally found a plan that helped. That my obession of the mind with food has been lifted. And, importantly, that I no longer identify myself as a compulsive overeater - that is not who I was intended to be, and that is not who I am.

Big shifts, my friends!!

Went and picked up my new birthday bike today! (My birthday is not until the end of the month but Rick wanted me to have it for my race.) I'm going biking with a friend tomorrow and will send a picture.

Meadow - great wisdom for Lynn's trip! It used to drive me crazy (and make me rebel) when my parents talked about what I ate.

Deb - Looking forward to Mexican!

Hi - thanks for asking. I'm hanging in there - didn't have time to do a cookup before my September 1 start. Forgot for a moment the morning of Sept 1 and ate a spoonful of my son's spaghetti at breakfast before remembering. So this whole30 is all about eating frozen leftovers from previous cookups. Chocolate chili for dinner last night and for breakfast this morning. Compliant sausage, onions and red peppers for a few meals over the weekend. Eggs and veggies for breakfast. No exercise whatsoever unless you count carrying about a billion boxes from the car into the house and then down into the basement. But, being on a whole30 has kept me from stuffing things into my mouth that I otherwise would have. I guess the short answer is, yes, it is possible to do a whole30 solely from all the stuff you froze from previous whole30s and didn't get around to eating.

Nothing to crow about but nice to be back on the wagon. Not having my kids be paleo or whole30 for the moment, though. Too hard.

Sorry to be MIA, I had a terrible allergy episode that landed me at the hospital last weekend. Fell off the plane, since unable to cook, and hospital food is aweful. I had some sublingual vitamin B complex and I started to get red, and swollen too much, too fast. Ambulance got me and took me to the hospital, no idea why that reaction to something I take almost every day :-( Detox? Well, checking with an immune and allergist doctor now, to see to what else I show allergies to. 

 

Planning to formally start again on Monday, and sure to need the autoimmune protocol. Ever since my Thyroid was taken out, my body keeps messing with other parts of my body, arrgghhh oh well.

 

Captain Dave and the rest, am I allowed to still be part of this flight? any late pick up?

You fell off the plane?!  I hope you didn't break or sprain anything.   Are you alright?  Did you fly by air ambulance?

I hope you're doing  better, Nanny.   Give us an update when you're able.

Oh good.  Hey, I come from a huge, enormous family.   I have over 150... 1st cousins.  There are mother/daughter combos of every kind.

There are those that are joined together at the hip and others...not so much.  My mother and I are friends.  She still can give me some of those zinger back-handed compliments.    We went shopping this week and she tells me in the store..."your breath smells like you've been eating moth-balls".   Say what?!  "What in the world have you been eating?"

 

So I cover my mouth, run and buy an iced tea.   "Is that better, Maw?"  "Oh, I guess so".   If she tells me my hair looks wild or anything, I always take it to heart.    I told her, "I was eating Bear's cooking and who knows what we've been eating.  It's probably roadkill or maybe it was a skunk."

 

So now, I keep asking him if my breath is like moth-balls.   Mothers can affect us like no one else in the world.  Their opinions matter because hopefully....and usually, they have our best interests at heart.

 

My mother can be blunt and so can I.   It doesn't mean I don't care because I really, really do.   I care about everyone on here and I want everyone to succeed.   I don't want you to fall down, dang it.   I want everyone to be a success with their W30 and reintro.   That's what I want but I know it's probably a fig newton of my imagination that everyone can.    So if you don't ,   I'll try harder not to be so blunt.   

 

I want everyone to make it into the Promised Land of good health.

I don't want us to wander around out here in the desert regions of fast food joints.   

 

So, come on now,  let's all go together.   Let's part the sea and walk on through to the greener pastures of grass-fed animals .
